Syfy announced shooting has begun on season two of the hit series Defiance starring Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene, Stephanie Leonidas, and Tony Curran. Season one broke new ground by becoming the first-ever television program to merge a series and online gaming with interconnected storylines that carried over onto both platforms, averaging 1.5 million viewers and earning the title of Syfy’s second-highest scripted original series.

Season two’s 13 new episodes will kick off in June 2014.

Details on Defiance [Courtesy of Syfy]:

As the story of Defiance resumes, the lives of the townspeople are in drastic turmoil. The Earth Republic has assumed control of the town, with far-reaching consequences including a new mayor. Nolan traverses the badlands to find a lost Irisa, Amanda has an unexpected new role in the town as she searches for Kenya and the Tarr family desperately tries to keep control of their criminal empire in the midst of dramatic changes.

James Murray joins the cast in the integral role of Pottinger, the new mayor of Defiance. Appointed by the Earth Republic, Pottinger is shrewd, polished and charming; he quickly wins the trust of most people he meets. But his civilized veneer hides a ruthless pragmatist who traffics in information and secrets, and mercilessly punishes those who defy him. Pottinger sees people as tools to be exploited or prizes to be won; his latest object of desire is ex-mayor Amanda (Benz).

‘Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition’ Returns for Season 2

Audiences can’t get enough of Abby Lee Miller or obnoxious dance parents, and Lifetime’s feeding into our need for more of Miller & Company by bringing Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition back for a second season. Kicking off on September 3, 2013 at 9pm ET/PT, the dance show will feature new dancers (and their overbearing moms) in 12 all-new episodes of the addictive series.

Season one of the series drew in impressive numbers, with the show averaging 16% higher viewership than Lifetime’s normal audience numbers.

Along with Miller, choreographer Richard Jackson and Rachelle Rak (Fosse, Cats, and Catch Me If You Can on Broadway) will be returning as judges.

The Details:

With 11 of the country’s most promising young dancers selected from more than 1,000 national title holders, this season of Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition will reach a fever pitch while a new cluster of mothers brings an entirely new meaning to the term “stage mom” as their children put everything on the line for a $100,000 cash prize and a scholarship to the Young Dancers Program at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York.

Throughout the 12-episode season, each dancer will learn new routines and compete in a number of challenges designed to test their skills while performing before judges Miller, Rak, and Jackson, and a live audience. Along the way, each competitor’s mother will play an integral part in the competition as they make critical make-or-break decisions on training, costumes, music and choreography for their child while building their list of “frenemies” among the group of intensely competitive parents.

New this season, the judges will be able to use a special “Call-back Card” to save one dancer from elimination, which is sure to heat up the tension on the panel and among the mothers. With dance themes such as Fame, Broadway, Modern Fairy Tales and Nightmares, this season’s contestants will experience the rigors of performing under the greatest pressure of their lives as they vie to be a future star and crowned the winner of Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition. Additionally, Maddie, star of Lifetime’s hit docusoap Dance Moms, is set to make special appearances on the series this season.

Sasha Roiz Discusses ‘Grimm’ and Ambiguous Characters

Although inquiring minds want to know the scoop on season three of NBC’s wild dramatic series Grimm, Sasha Roiz (‘Captain Sean Renard’) was unable to spill the beans because he simply hadn’t seen that many scripts. At the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con to promote the popular series, Roiz said he’d only had a look at three episodes, but he did provide fans of the show a few hints at what’s to come.

“There’s going to be a blow-out between Eric [played by James Frain] and I. There are going to be issues with the baby that’s coming. And there will be a lot of residuals from this zombie infestation, as there always is,” offered Roiz when asked if there was anything at all he could tell us about the third season.

Roiz believes that it could have been halfway through last season when Grimm hit its stride, or it could be that this upcoming season will find the show really solidly in the groove. “I felt like the season opener of season two was strong, we found our footing, it got very dark last year, and I think we feel much more comfortable in that sort of dark place,” explained Roiz. “And at the same time, it was really beautifully counterbalanced with the humor, with a great sense of humor. They’re not afraid to be quirky and funny, and I think that when we found that balance is when we hit our stride.”

As for his own character, Roiz says he’s pretty solid now. “Generally first years are funny because everyone’s trying to find their footing, including the writers, the network, the actors because we’re not quite sure…we know where we want to go, but we’re not sure how we’re going to get there. Eventually, once you get a second season, then you know that you’re supported and your vision and your work is so that you start to find your footing.”

And Roiz points to season two’s episode in which Renard and Nick (played by David Giuntoli) confront each other as his favorite thus far. “We have a fight in the woods, and there’s so much commotion going on,” recalled Roiz. “There’s one crazy woman and then another crazy woman, and the key and all this [stuff]. Just so much is going on and, finally, him discovering who I am and facing off is a lot of fun.”

So, is Captain Sean Renard a good guy or a bad guy? Roiz says it’s wonderful playing a character who no one really knows which side he’s on. “I lament the day where I won’t be ambiguous. I hope it never happens. I like a character with secrets, and I like somebody who’s very complicated and torn, and I think that makes for very interesting viewing. I think it’s a much more interesting character than someone who is predictable.”

“We have to walk a very fine line between committing and over-committing to something because it may be repealed, it may not work, they may decide to drive the story in a different direction,” answered Roiz when asked if it’s easier to play Renard not knowing exactly where he stands. “We never know because we have 22 episodes a season – so much can happen and so many storylines may not work. We have to always keep some sort of a balance between committing to this episode but not over-extending ourselves.”

2013’s Top Dogs Compete in the Hero Dog Awards

American Humane AssociationDid you enter your furry friend in the competition to see who will be named the 2013 American Hero Dog by the American Humane Association? While every dog is a hero to its human companion, only eight out of 141 entries have made the final cut and will be competing at the 3rd annual American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards to be held on October 5, 2013.

Over a million people voted in the initial round, narrowing the field down to eight winners in specific categories. Now these eight top dogs will have a shot at being named the overall winner in a new round of voting underway at www.herodogawards.org. The public is invited to vote once a day for their favorite dog now through September 26th.

“Every dog who was nominated is truly an American hero,” stated Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane Association. “Every day, in all sorts of ways, dogs protect, comfort, and provide unconditional friendship and nonjudgmental companionship to the sick, the infirm, our veterans and their families, and children facing difficulties. This is American Humane Association’s third year celebrating the very special friendship and absolute heroic feats they perform for us daily. We thank the animals, their dedicated owners and handlers, and the generous sponsors who have helped bring about that recognition: The Lois Pope LIFE Foundation, Hallmark Channel, MRB Productions, national online sponsor and Therapy Dog sponsor Zoetis®, Military Dog sponsor Royal Canin®, Law Enforcement and Arson Dog sponsor State Farm®, Emerging Hero Dog sponsor Paul Mitchell Schools, Best Producer sponsor Merial and print sponsor Modern Dog magazine. Dogs may be our best friends, but these caring organizations are theirs.”

“Heroes come in all colors and sizes, and they don’t just walk on two legs,” added Lois Pope. “I have seen dogs bring such love and joy to the lives of children with cancer and other debilitating illnesses, and offer tremendous support and comfort to disabled veterans. I know there are dogs who are working alongside and protecting our police and fire professionals and our military. And of course, there are so many dogs who provide invaluable and life-transforming service to the blind and the deaf. They are true heroes and they deserve our love, our respect and our honor. That’s why I’m so proud to be a part of this awards program and American Humane Association.”

The Hallmark Channel will air the 90 minute awards show special on November 7, 2013.

2013’s Hero Dog Finalists:

EMERGING HERO DOGS CATEGORY (sponsored by Paul Mitchell Schools)
WINNER: Cassidy (Midvale, UT) — Three years ago a good Samaritan pulled over to pick up a pile of trash on the side of the highway. Under the garbage was a skinny, matted, scared little black dog who had been hit by a car. Cassidy was rushed to the emergency vet where his front leg was amputated. Sheltie Rescue of Utah took him into their program and Cassidy found his forever home with Kathy. But Cassidy’s amazing journey did not stop there; he is an advocate for special needs rescues and works to show that every life has value. He is proof that dogs are not disposable. Cassidy and his mom also do presentations for children about disabilities, acceptance and how everyone is different, special and has something positive to give to the world. Cassidy visits rehabilitation centers and is living proof that there is always hope and that anything is possible. Despite everything he has been through he has a very loving and trusting nature. He snuggles into each person’s arms and shows them that he is perfect the way he is and that they too are perfect the way they are.

GUIDE DOG CATEGORY
WINNER: Jingles (Amsterdam, NY) — Jingles is a Lab/Golden cross guide dog who works as part of a heroic team with a diabetic alert canine to help Karen Ann, who is multiply disabled. Jingles is joy unbounded, full of exuberance, and works hard to guide Karen Ann safely in every situation. Crossing streets Jingles maintains focus in the face of blaring horns, screeching brakes, and quiet hybrid vehicles that sneak up out of nowhere. She’s adept at avoiding kids on scooters, people bustling by, construction barriers and the distraction of yapping pet dogs on flexi leads. In stores she steers Karen Ann clear of day-dreaming shoppers darting out of aisles with loaded carts, and guides her safely to where she wants to go. Jingles was trained to work on the left side of her partner but since Karen Ann is unable to work a dog on that side, Jingles underwent additional training and now she is Karen Ann’s “right hand” girl. Jingles is unusual among guide dogs as she’s trained to work in tandem with a second service dog. Together they offer a profoundly special gift to Karen Ann, offering her independence, safety and dignity. Karen Ann says both dogs are her heroes, but “Jingles is absolutely a one of a kind guide dog.”

HEARING DOG CATEGORY
WINNER: Lola (Bellingham, Washington) – Lola, a dog rescued from abuse and neglect, is paying it forward–daily helping and rescuing her partner Charlene, who is deaf. Charlene relies on Lola for so many things, connecting her to the world of sound around her. Lola is her alarm clock, her exercise companion, and her reason to move beyond depression and self-imposed isolation. Lola expands her activities, reminding Charlene to improve, not compromise, her quality of life. Whenever the oven-timer buzzes, the phone rings, or someone knocks at the door–Lola alerts her and insists on Charlene’s paying attention to the world around her. She’s always game for going to the ballpark, hospital visits, grocery store, rides on airplanes – even canoeing. Lola is a gem of a partner; she lightens Charlene’s spirit as a source of courage and peace. When Charlene is alone, she helps her cope with the impact of hearing loss. Says Charlene, “Let the trumpets blow, fireworks blast, and the parade begin–my hearing dog Lola is a life-saver–an unsung heroine who gives her best daily to fulfill a higher purpose and for whom I’ll be forever grateful.”

LAW ENFORCEMENT/ARSON DOG CATEGORY (sponsored by State Farm®)
WINNER: K9 Lakota (Locust Grove, Georgia) — K9 Lakota served alongside Officer Travis Fox for less than four years but made remarkable achievements in his short career, among them more than 80 apprehensions, 28 drug seizures, $60,000 seized, six vehicle seizures, the recovery of stolen property, and the seizure of $60,000. K9 Lakota’s career was ended prematurely in route to a home invasion call when Officer Fox and K9 Lakota ended up in a serious car accident. The accident split the car in two, ejecting both the officer and the dog from the car. K9 Lakota was not expected to live but his strong spirit fought on and after four surgeries (with more expected in his future), he is enjoying life in retirement. His work and his will to fight and live have shown his heroic side and he has brought people all over the world together for his cause. His story is now being used to help change laws for Law Enforcement Officer K9s so that they are better protected by their departments in case they are injured in the line of duty. K9 Lakota has been a true hero both in the line of duty and in retirement.

MILITARY DOG CATEGORY (sponsored by Royal Canin®)
WINNER: CWD Carlos EDD (Colorado Springs, CO) — Explosive Detection Dog CWD Carlos retired in 2011 at the age of eight, after protecting U.S. and ISAF forces in continuous deployment for nearly five years. CWD Carlos, who worked with the U.S. Army’s 3rd & 4th Infantry Divisions in Baghdad for two and a half years, was then transferred to Kandahar in 2009 to work in direct support of U.S. Special Forces on the front lines. Carlos is credited with finds on missions that saved the lives of many American soldiers. As Carlos aged, he was transferred to work with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), a NATO-led security mission in Afghanistan that was established by the United Nations Security Council. Sadly, upon retirement Carlos seems to have been the victim of neglect. To this day, Carlos still carries ligature mark scars on his back legs from hobble-style restraints. Fortunately for this hero, he was reclaimed, eventually adopted by the Ridpath family, and got a “Freedom Flight” HOME! Carlos continues to bring awareness to the contributions of all working dogs. A warrior with a zest for life in spite of his challenging medical issues, CWD Carlos is a true hero who saved uncounted lives while deployed, attends events, visits schools, and is an inspiration to everyone he meets.

SEARCH AND RESCUE DOG CATEGORY
WINNER: John D (Little Rock, AR) — John D is a Search and Rescue dog, human cancer detective and all-around humanitarian. When needed, John D is called in to find the missing in kidnappings, disasters, drownings, and other emergencies. One day, John D was called in for a river search. Moments after he arrived, a woman approached and asked to pet him. She hugged him and whispered in his ear, “YOU are my only hope. Please go find my child. Please bring my baby back to me.” There was an immediate bond between them. John D then boarded a boat and went out on the river. For hours he searched. John D was drawn to the water, completely focused on it and began dipping his nose at the same spot. When the boat returned to shore, this hero dog leapt off the boat, running straight to the woman who had greeted him. He leaned hard against her. She bent down and hugged him. When she lifted her face from John D’s fur, there were tears. John D had found her son who had drowned two days before. John D also works to save lives by using his remarkable scenting ability to advance the use of canines in detecting ovarian cancer and other cancers, which may help save a mother, daughter or sister from a devastating disease. John D’s determination to work, despite his own severe hip dysplasia, provides inspiration to others. Once a rescue dog saved by people, now John D spends his life helping and saving them.

SERVICE DOG CATEGORY
WINNER: SD Bronx (Brunswick, GA) — Can you imagine having your whole world change? Can you imagine having no friends? For 14-year-old Christopher those two questions were his reality. At the age of nine, Christopher began having seizures and was spending most of his childhood in the hospital trying to get answers. The answers were coming, but none of them were good. The doctors found out what was causing the seizures and they tried to use medicine to control them – one medicine after another. The seizures made it impossible for Christopher to attend school and other kids no longer wanted to be his friend – they were afraid of the seizures. Even Christopher was too afraid to sleep in his bedroom and didn’t like leaving the house – the seizures had taken his childhood from him. Enter SD Bronx! Suddenly Christopher was not alone in his terrifying fight. His hero dog would tell him when seizures were about to happen and quickly alert others to help. SD Bronx stayed by his side at all doctor visits, and was there when Christopher lost half his field of vision, stepping into another role and working with Christopher and his sight cane. The challenges were hard but hero dog SD Bronx has helped Christopher to do more than he ever dreamed he could.

THERAPY DOG CATEGORY (sponsored by Zoetis)
WINNER: Elle (Roanoke Rapids, NC) — Elle began her journey as a therapy dog in 2010 and has touched many hearts, leaving a lasting impression on those she meets. Elle is saving lives by teaching children dog safety and making positive life changes for people by helping them overcome their fear of dogs. Since becoming a volunteer, Elle started a therapy dog reading program called “Tail Wagging Tales,” helping children enjoy books and improve their reading skills. Elle is making a difference by creating happiness all around while visiting her friends at an elementary school, a middle school, and a retirement home. Elle also reaches out to educate families about being responsible pet parents, sharing stories about her job as a therapy dog, and spreading positive awareness about dogs that are misunderstood. Everyone loves her signature “high-five” greeting when making a new friend, allowing for a real life meet-and-greet with a pit bull. Elle was invited to have her school portrait in the Vaughan Elementary School Annual and she is now called a “Hometown Hero” in her community. Hero Dog Elle hopes her work will create a better future for young people to learn about love, understanding, and kindness to all.

New ‘Diana’ Trailer Shows the Princess in Love

Princess Diana’s relationship with heart surgeon Dr Hasnat Kahn is the focus of this new trailer for the dramatic movie Diana. Naomi Watts stars as the People’s Princess and Lost‘s Naveen Andrews plays the doctor who Princess Di fell hard for but whose relationship unfortunately didn’t last.

Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, Diana is heading to theaters on September 20, 2013.

The Plot: “Diana takes audiences into the private realm of one the world’s most iconic and inescapably public women — the Princess of Wales, Diana (Watts) — in the last two years of her meteoric life. On the occasion of the 16th anniversary of her sudden death, acclaimed director Oliver Hirschbiegel explores Diana’s final rite of passage: a secret love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Andrews), the human complications of which reveal the Princess’s climactic days in a compelling new light.”

Inside ‘Revolution’ with Giancarlo Esposito

Giancarlo Esposito Revolution

Giancarlo Esposito hopes we never have to experience anything similar in our lifetime to what the characters are going through in NBC’s Revolution. Season one found the power extinguished and life turned upside down for those trying to cope with this strange new world. But in season two, Esposito says things are going to get even crazier.

“You expect to be the big boss man and you have the ability to sort of want to control everything but you really can’t in a world that is unpredictable and vulnerable. And so I’m excited to be in a new city with new people and a different look to the show, which creates more interest and visually more eye candy for what we’re doing,” explained Esposito during our interview at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con.

As for the relationship between Esposito’s character Tom and his son, Jason (played by JD Pardo), Esposito said Tom feels letdown.

“It’s not that Tom does not like his son or take his interest into consideration, but he’s disappointed. He raised this boy to be a survivor and everything points to this young man not listening to the advice or the way that he was raised. And when your children sort of go that way…especially in a world that is so tenuous, that’s so on edge…it could mean life and death,” said Esposito.

“It’s not that he doesn’t love him; it’s just that the boy hasn’t gotten it yet. Now, in season two we start in a position where they’re thrown together once again. The roles might get reversed for a period of time because you’re in a world where the bomb has hit, cities have been wiped out and we don’t know where people we love are. So then all aspirations and machinations of being the one who controls the world are gone. Now you can only control yourself – hardly even that because of the water supply, food…”

What else can we expect from this upcoming season? Check out the full interview:

Her credits also include I Hate My Teenage Daughter, Raising Hope, and Two and a Half Men.

TV Land’s Executive Vice President of Development and Original Programming Keith Cox made the casting announcement, stating: “It’s amazing to have someone like Jaime Pressly on board for Jennifer Falls. Jennifer Falls was created by Matthew Carlson (The Wonder Years, Malcolm in the Middle) and is executive produced by Carlson, Michael Hanel, and Mindy Schultheis.

The Plot: Jennifer Falls revolves around a career woman and mother (Pressly) who must move back in with her own mom after being let go from her high-powered, six-figure salary job. Claire Coffee Talks ‘Grimm’ and Playing Adalind

Claire Coffee Grimm

What’s going to happen to Adalind’s baby on the upcoming season of NBC’s hit fantasy series, Grimm? Claire Coffee doesn’t have a clue, but she has ideas as to what she’d like to see happen to her character on season three of the popular show. And at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, Coffee talked to us about what we can expect from the new season.

Claire Coffee Grimm Interview

What can you say about the upcoming season?

Claire Coffee: “I can tell you that I actually came from set to the airport to here, so what we just did….there’s a lot of blood, there’s a lot of gore, and Adalind is fiercely and anyway she knows how trying to get those powers back. Adalind and Stefania [played by Shohreh Aghdashloo] are forming this alliance, and they’re both getting something out of it.”

Once they’re back, who do you think is going to get it first?

Claire Coffee: “That’s a really good question. I think Adalind has spent this time off kind of formulating her hit list. I think she just wants – more than to kill anybody – I think she wants to get as much power as possible. She wants to rise in the hierarchy, so I think it will depend on who’s at the top of the food chain and that will be first on the list.”

Can you drop a hint on the baby daddy?

Claire Coffee: “I don’t even know. I don’t even think they know quite yet. If they know, they haven’t told me. I read the first three episodes. But I was put in a life cast for the baby belly that I’m going to grow, so I know that she’s going to be carrying the baby to term. But that’s about all I can say about that.”

What’s it like actually being on the set?

Claire Coffee: “It’s great. I love being in Portland. We do a lot of night shoots so it’s a lot of night forest. I work mostly with Shohreh Aghdashloo who is probably the most lovely person on the face of the earth. I’m off in ‘Vienna’ with Shohreh.”

Why do you think Grimm has caught on with audiences?

Claire Coffee: “You know, the people who come up to me the most are people who say, ‘We watch it with our whole family. Everybody watches on Friday nights.’ So, I think it really does have something for everybody. Like, the younger audiences that kind of fantasy…it gets a little bit scary, so that keeps the people who are into gore and horror and thriller on board. But there’s heart to the show, there’s romance. I think it just kind of covers everything.”

Was there ever an episode that freaked you out?

Claire Coffee: “Yeah. The fly episode was so gory, and so that really, really grossed me out.”

Do you think that because of the number of supernatural shows on air these days, there’s a sense that Grimm has to up the ante?

Claire Coffee: “I definitely think you have to figure out your niche, your part of that supernatural element. And I think what ours is is really a police procedural, but we’re in the world that we live in. It’s like, ‘What if fantasy was in this world that we are all inhabiting?'”

Is there a fairy tale they haven’t explored yet that you’d like to see introduced into the series?

Claire Coffee: “You know, Hansel and Gretel was the one that terrified me the most growing up, and they did a great job with that. But they are doing more with the pigs, an episode with the pigs. This season I think it will be more about the serialized plot and kind of getting into the royal family and all of that mythology. I know that we’re going to be meeting new creatures, but I don’t know how specific they will be to the fairy tales this season.”

Do you like playing Adalind without her powers?

Claire Coffee: “I think without powers it’s just a new challenge because it’s frustrating for her to try and balance this need for power with these human emotions, so that’s interesting. But she’s fun no matter what. She’s so awful [laughing] and you can exorcise all of those terrible thoughts you have on a daily basis with her.”

If you had input into what’s going to be happening to Adalind down the road, what do you think she should be doing?

Claire Coffee: “I think she should be ruler of the universe! I hope Adalind will have to choose…she’s trying to sell her baby, but I hope it gives her pause. I’d like to think she has some connection to the baby and has some misgivings about selling the thing. So, I’m hoping that that comes into play.”
