Tobey Maguire, Kristen Wiig Join ‘The Spoils of Babylon’

IFC’s new original comedy The Spoils of Babylon has signed up a big-name cast. Joining Will Ferrell in the Funny or Die production will be Tobey Maguire, Kristen Wiig, Jessica Alba, Val Kilmer, Haley Joel Osment, Michael Sheen, and Tim Robbins. The Spoils of Babylon is described as a parody of epic television mini-series and is being executive produced by Ferrell, Adam McKay, Matt Piedmont, Andrew Steele, and Nate Young.

Piedmont is directing the six half-hour episodes which will air on IFC in 2014.

“This amazingly talented cast will give this decadent genre its due respect,” stated Jennifer Caserta, president and general manager of IFC. “Never before has a parody of a mini-series been more poised for showers of accolades.”

The Plot:

The Spoils of Babylon is a television adaptation of a best-selling epic novel by fictional famous author Eric Jonrosh (Ferrell) whose library spans 57 best sellers in 85 different languages. Jonrosh’s other titles include: The Spoils of Galaxy 7, The Spoils of Grasping for God, The Spoils of the Sahara, The Spoils of the Singing Night Squirrel, The Spoils of the Weeping Falcon, and The Spoils Beneath the Sea.

“I’m thrilled my masterwork is finally making it to the screen, albeit the small screen. Although I guess these days people have pretty big screens in their homes but still not as big as “the big screen.” I mean, some people who have home theaters might have screens that big, but most wouldn’t, at least that’s what I would imagine. Still, I’m thrilled, and I personally DO have a giant screen TV so…” trailed off Jonrosh in a quote that was dictated over the phone from his yacht The Super Bard, anchored off his personal island in the Caspian Sea.

The Spoils of Babylon, a century-spanning saga, chronicles the sexy and dramatic lives of the Morehouse family, led by Jonas Morehouse (Robbins), his daughter Cynthia (Wiig) and her adopted brother Devon (Maguire) who made their fortune in the oil business. The series takes viewers from the oil fields of Texas to boardrooms in New York City, through war torn battlefields and velvet-sheeted bedrooms.

Cynthia and Devon’s unbridled and taboo passion for one another cannot be prevented. Add in Cynthia’s evil son Winston (Osment), her put-upon husband Chet Halner (Sheen), and Devon’s new love interest Dixie Mellonworth (Alba), and the booze, the pills, more passion, more pills and the heartache, and you have a mercurial potboiler. Then add in illegal arms deals, international espionage, the Shah of Iran (Ferrell), and two US Army Generals (Kilmer, Steve Tom) and it begins to overflow with boiling liquid in a pot on a hot stove that is operational.

Matt Smith is Leaving Doctor Who

Matt Smith stars in Doctor Who
Matt Smith in 'Doctor Who'
It is official – Matt Smith will be exiting BBC’s Doctor Who after four years as the star of the series. Smith’s final appearance in the series will come with the Christmas special following the 50th Anniversary show in November.

Smith has the honor of being the first actor to earn a BAFTA nomination for the role in BBC America’s highest rated series. He also won the Most Popular Male Drama Performance award at the National Television Awards.

Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realize all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.Having Steven Moffat as showrunner write such varied, funny, mind-bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It’s been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he’s a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.

The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I’ve never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I’m back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!

It’s been an honor to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with ‘the ginger, the nose and the impossible one’. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt.”

“Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he’d turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently,” stated lead writer/executive producer Steven Moffat. “And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him – sometimes literally – his behavior was always worthy of the Doctor.

But great actors always know when it’s time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt – bow ties were never cooler.

Of course, this isn’t the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now – all unknowing, just going about their business – is someone who’s about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that’s still so exciting!”

Details on Matt’s actual exit from the series are being kept a closely guarded secret.

‘Falling Skies’ Season 3 Doug Jones and Remi Aubuchon Interview

Falling Skies Cast

Falling Skies executive producer/writer Remi Aubuchon joined Doug Jones – a master at making creatures seem real in films and on television – to talk about the third season of TNT’s sci-fi series. The upcoming season finds Tom Mason (played by Noah Wyle) elevated to a higher political position and working with rebel aliens to secure the safety of his group and fight the invading forces.

Jones brings to life Cochise, a leader of the rebels and a key player in season three of Falling Skies. And in support of the show’s premiere on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 9pm, Aubuchon and Jones took part in a conference call to discuss all things Falling Skies.

Doug, you’ve done so many different creatures, how does this one compare in getting into it physically?

Doug Jones: “Well this one is – first of all, it’s much quicker to get into the makeup. It was only a couple of hours as opposed to the five hours I’m used to for film roles, so there’s that. Also, I did have to do the usual physical training because I had a lot of extra weight to carry around with me with the muscles built in because Cochise is much more muscular than I am, so there’s that. But also, he stands and talks a lot. He’s very smart and very astute and very informative, so it was a memorization issue for me too with paragraphs of dialogue that were being rewritten up to the day we filmed.

It was a challenge, and yet one that I really welcomed because I just absolutely love this character.”

With Cochise being the new alien race, the Volm, how much back story are we going to get not only on your specific character but on the entire race and the trust issues that are being brought up?

Doug Jones: “[…]That question remains as the season opens with, you know, why are they here? Why are these Volm characters here? Are they friends or foes? I come off friendly, and I would like to think that I stay that way, but I think if you look at me and my character through the perspective of Will Patton’s Colonel Weaver or Colin Cunningham’s John Pope, those characters are the ones that are kind of the naysayers that are not quite on board with me yet.

Now, Noah Wyle’s Tom Mason, he’s the one who befriends me, and he’s the one I’m most interested in because he’s the leader of his people, I’m the leader of mine, and we have a lot of responsibility to share together. So I think if you look at me through the perspective of all the characters on the show, you’ll get a better idea of where I’m headed.”

Was anything about this role that wasn’t originally scripted for you that you’ve added to it?

Doug Jones: “Well with Remi listening in here too, I’m going to give him some credit here – more credit than I ever deserve. He created – and all the writers created – a very lovely full, rich character with Cochise. And I think once Remi got to know my personality and saw a little glint of humor in who I am as well, he kind of added some comedic timing for me here and there. He’s not a comedic character, but he has moments where he’s trying to fit in. He’s trying to get the humans’ ways and there are some moments that’ll make you chuckle. That was a bit of a surprise I think for all of us.”

Remi, how much do you relate to the characters of this sci-fi series?

Remi Aubuchon: “Well, you always hope as a writer that you bring yourself to every script that you write. I personally have identified with most of the characters that are in Falling Skies. I identify with aspects of them including Cochise, and I think we’ve all known what it’s like to be in a situation that you’re not completely…well, that you’re a foreigner in or in many ways, you know, you certainly don’t feel in step culturally with it. And I tried to bring some of that to Cochise, which Doug wonderfully took and ran with.

Someone asked me the other day, ‘What motivated you to find a character like Cochise?’ And I said, ‘Well, my experience that I’ve spent in Mexico for a couple of years where I had to fit in and work with people and had language barriers, and yet found myself falling in love with you know the Mexican people and the culture itself.’ And I think there’s a little bit of Cochise in that as well.”

Remi, you recently announced that this would be your last season as showrunner. Can you tell us what your favorite storyline or episode was in season 3?

Remi Aubuchon: “Right. Well, the whole thrust of season 3 has been Tom Mason’s struggle to find himself as a leader, which he is – was not born to, not particularly comfortable with – and he’s trying to balance that with the needs of his family. And knowing that instinctively he feels he’s doing the right stuff even against the odds of it not appearing on the surface of being the correct path to take, specifically with his relationship with Cochise and also the decisions that he makes as President of the New United States. That, really, I found compelling and fascinating and full of rich colors to write for.

I have to be honest… You know, I enjoy writing for Falling Skies, and my leaving has absolutely nothing to do with that. It’s really about wanting to pursue a dream that I’ve had for a long, long time and feeling like now is the time to do it. So the relationships between the characters in Falling Skies have just been a dream come true for any writer, but especially me because I’ve really gotten to explore some pretty complex thematic ideas in the Falling Skies. And I think specifically in this third season where we’ve really gone much deeper into the characters’ complex relationships.”

Were this season’s main storylines always in the pipeline or did some come up between 2 and 3?

Remi Aubuchon: “Well, I think that television is always a dynamic collaboration, and while we had some very specific ideas even at the beginning of season 2 where we wanted to be in season 3, things change and the actors bring us stuff. As Doug mentioned just earlier, you know suddenly there’s something that you hadn’t anticipated in a character that an actor brings out that you go, ‘Oh, my gosh. I didn’t think about that, but that’s a great way to bring this about.’

So, I think we had the basic building blocks of the story for season 3 in hand – well, certainly between season 2 and season 3, but even at the end of season 2 we had sort of set out the goals we wanted to accomplish in season 3, and I think we pretty much got there. How we got there, that was a little bit more of a twisty-turney journey, but I think the results are pretty awesome.”

Will we still see that individual dynamic of the smaller group play out even though the universe is bigger this season?

Remi Aubuchon: “Yes. And, actually, I think this is a really good question because the challenge for us is then to not only expand our scope of the world as we know it on Earth but also expand the bigger picture, the mythology, by bringing in the Volm, by deepening our understanding of the Espheni and the Overlord. The challenge of course is always how much and how fast do we expand that world out. But I think what’s fun about bringing new characters in with new perspectives and new experiences of how they faced the common trauma of the alien invasion actually enhances and makes for better storytelling the more we expand out the human experience of it all.

We will meet a lot of people outside of the Second Mass. We were so very isolated in the second season and when we got to Charleston there was almost a huge collective deep breath from the Second Mass. You could almost feel it that suddenly they had other people to talk to and find out things. And we had some very specific characters this season that help us to expand that world. Marina, played by Gloria Reuben, who is wonderful. And Marina has her own experience not only of the invasion, but she clearly seems to have a sense of politics. She was in the background in Charleston way before Tom and the Second Mass ever showed up.

And then we have a character we’ll introduce played by Robert Sean Leonard, Roger Kadar, who we learn has been the ‘mad scientist’ in the bowels of Charleston that’s been keeping the infrastructure alive all this time. And obviously also has such a very deep trauma in his experience with the invasion that he won’t even come to the surface to interact with other humans.

And, I think we start to see that we’ve been so focused on the experience of the Second Mass. But to suddenly see how other humans are dealing with everything I think makes for a very rich tapestry in this season.”

What made you decide to change up the show and go from them constantly on the move to settling down? What was behind that decision?

Remi Aubuchon: “Well, I think that change-up in television especially is always a good thing. And I would say that we really aren’t this season just sticking in one place. It’s true that we have like a headquarters, but we’re going to be moving around a lot this season. And I think there’s a practical side to it, which is that while it’s kind of exciting to do a show about a group of people constantly on the run, it’s also incredibly taxing production-wise. We shoot in Vancouver where the rain is – and the weather is really not our friend.

There are a couple of times in the second season where we had – one time, specifically – where we had to shut down production because we had 80-mile-an-hour winds going and no place to run and hide. It’s the first time I actually felt the real experience of what the Second Mass might be going through sitting in a tent completely traumatized. And so I think we wanted to make sure that we had a place that we could go from a practical point of view.

But the storytelling of this season needs a place like Charleston to be able to bounce off of other places that we go to in the season. So in many ways, I think it’s a positive change up and not just done because we like to have some warmth in our lives when we’re shooting. It was also really to basically be able to kind of energize the storytelling.”

This is one of a couple very popular post-apocalyptic shows right now. There’s a very strong appeal to audiences right now with this sort of story. Why do you think that is?

Remi Aubuchon: “You know, apocalyptic stories have been around since recorded history, or since we started writing things down about our traumatic experiences and what’s going on in our head. And I think every time you see that you see an appeal when the world feels very complicated, very overwhelming. When it seems like there’s no solution on earth for a correction, suddenly an intervention from another source. In modern thinking, it’s either, you know, a zombie invasion or it’s an alien invasion. Certainly in the Bible in the Old Testament in Daniel’s apocalypse it’s God, and also in the New Testament, and I think those are reflections of that particular civilization’s point-of-view.

I don’t think it is as a apocalyptic trauma as much as I think people are seeing the apocalyptic fantasy of it all. The idea is that things go down to the basics, that we actually have a chance to have control over our lives. That’s my personal belief of why I think things are appealing, why it’s so appealing to audiences, especially now.

But I think the other aspect of it is, is that the thing that scares us often is the thing that also energizes us. And we like to believe that we all could be heroes if all of a sudden zombies showed up at our doorstep. Well, I would not personally be that hero, but I’d be running really fast. But, you like to think that you’d be the Tom Mason who you know grabs a gun and says, ‘By God, we’re not going to let people take over our homeland.’ I think that there’s a strong appeal to that.

It’s funny. I think as things get better, as the economy gets better, I think you start to see less interest in apocalyptic fantasies. I hope the economy gets better, but I hope there’ll still be appeal to our show because we’re a little bit more than just an apocalypse. We’re really about human beings and the human condition and how to deal with each other.”

Behind the Scenes of White House Down – ‘The Beast’ Featurette

Go behind the scenes of the action movie White House Down with this featurette spotlighting ‘The Beast’, the car used by the President of the United States. It’s basically a panic room on wheels and the production team had to come up with what they thought was a close replica of the real thing without any input from the Secret Service as to the car’s true specifications.

Starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, White House Down opens in theaters on June 28, 2013.

The Plot:

Capitol Policeman John Cale (Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.

‘Shipping Wars’ Returns for Season Four

Jennifer Brennan from Shipping Wars

I love Shipping Wars and I have no idea why. Thankfully, I’m not alone in my admiration for the trucking series, as evidenced by the fact that A&E is launching season four on June 11, 2013. The series returns with back-to-back episodes kicking off at 10pm ET/PT.

According to the network, three new teams will be competing with returning Shipping Wars players for shipping assignments.

Details on Season Four:

In the new season of Shipping Wars, Marc, Jarrett, Jennifer, Roy, Chris, and Robbie are back, and as always, no shipment is too strange or too problematic for these professionals to handle… but handling the new competition that is trying to break in to the bidding wars is a different story!

In the season premiere episode at 10pm, after Jarrett books a load of monkeys, he learns why people say “never work with kids or animals.” Marc delivers a load for a Las Vegas magician and more than his patience disappears. At 10:30pm, Chris and Robbie convert one of their rigs to run on vegetable oil and end up making a bet with the client- beat the tight, cross-country deadline and do it all on free grease. Roy tries to jumpstart his son Travis in the hauling business, but the cab gets cramped when Travis brings along a girlfriend and decades of baggage.

The new shipping teams that will be appearing this upcoming season include Courtney and Chelsea, Johnny, and Kourtney and Tish. Rookie movers Courtney and Chelsea may look like a pair of party girls, but their blonde hair and good looks are deceiving. The longtime friends grew up in a small country town raising livestock, working on ranches and getting their hands dirty, and they are not afraid of hard work, heavy lifting and long drives.

For veteran driver Johnny, shipping is in his blood. He knew that truck driving would be his career since he was a little boy, and nearly forty years later, he is still happy behind the wheel making extremely difficult shipments. Kourtney and Tish, a self-proclaimed power couple, have only a little over a year of experience in the shipping business, but Kourtney’s past as a UFC boxing champion has them ready to try to knock out the competition.

‘Monsters University’ Shows Off New Clips

Head off to college with this new series of videos from Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University. The new clips include Mike and Sulley’s first morning as part of the Oozma Kappa group, Sulley’s capture of the rival school’s mascot, and the Oozma Kappa’s initiation ritual.

Monsters University was directed by Dan Scanlan and opens in theaters on June 21, 2013. The voice cast is led by Billy Crystal and John Goodman and includes Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina, Dave Foley, Sean P. Hayes, Joel Murray, Peter Sohn, Charlie Day, Nathan Fillion, Bobby Moynihan, Julia Sweeney, Aubrey Plaza, Tyler Labine, John Krasinski, Bonnie Hunt, Beth Behrs and John Ratzenberger.

The Plot: Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.

Isla Fisher Talks Now You See Me and Stunt Work

Isla Fisher says she had no idea she could say no to doing her own stunts in Now You See Me. She also says she had a great time working with the entire ensemble cast, and in particular being on the same set as Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. And in this video interview in support of the film’s theatrical release, Fisher also discusses her character’s unbridled female spirit and overcoming some of her personal fears while working on Now You See Me.

The Plot:

Now You See Me pits an elite FBI squad in a game of cat and mouse against “The Four Horsemen”, a super-team of the world’s greatest illusionists. “The Four Horsemen” pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their performances, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law.

The Return of ‘The Killing’ Offers Up a New Viewing Option

The Killing is back for a third season premiering on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at 8pm on AMC, and with its return comes a new sort of viewing experience. Just as the network did with The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad, AMC will be offering a second screen Story Sync that allows viewers to watch the premiere “while interacting with the series and each other.”

The dual-screen option will provide more info on the show and can be accessed using computers, tablets, and mobile devices at TheKillingStorySync.com.

“For viewers looking for a high-quality, curated, second screen experience, Story Sync complements linear viewing with content that offers a richer, deeper engagement specifically designed to supplement the story playing out on the primary screen,” stated Mac McKean, AMC’s senior vice president of digital media. “We know a significant portion of our audience is engaging in social media and other second-screen applications while they watch these shows, so our goal with Story Sync is to offer the best experience possible with authentic elements carefully integrated with the creative on television.”

The Plot:

Season three begins one year after the close of the second season, with Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) no longer working as a detective. But when her ex-partner Stephen Holder’s (Joel Kinnaman) search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that connects to a previous murder investigation by Linden, she is drawn back into the life she thought she’d left behind.
