Book Review: ‘Surviving the Angel of Death: The Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz’

Surviving the Angel of Death Book Review

In Surviving the Angel of Death: The Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz, author and Holocaust survivor Eva Kor details her life with her twin sister Miriam in Auschwitz, the home of the infamous “Dr.” Mengele. In 1944, at only 10 years of age, Eva and Miriam were ripped from their home, taken to a ghetto, then to a camp, then forced into a cattle car, taken on a seventy-hour train trip with no food or water, and ultimately arrived at the selection platform at Auschwitz.

Once on the platform, Eva and Miriam desperately held their mother’s hand. Their father and two older sisters were lost in the crowd. She and Miriam were then immediately separated from their mother, never to see her their father or their two older sisters again. Singled out by Mengele himself, she and her sister were spared because they were twins. Mengele was fascinated by twins and conducted heinous medical experiments on them.

This is a shorter version of Ms. Kor’s biography, Echoes from Auschwitz: Dr. Mengele’s Twins: The Story of Eva and Miriam Mozes (1995). It is for Teen/Young Adult readers, but I recommend it to everyone and I hope that schools will include this book on their lists of required reading. None of the horrific medical experiments are detailed, but this does not take anything away from the fear, desolation, terror, and atrocities that these young girls faced as the Nazis came to power and then in the death camp.

The story is heartbreaking and yet heartwarming. The strength and determination of 10-year-old Eva to keep her sister alive in the most desperate and intolerable of conditions exceed that of most adults. There have been thousands of books written about the Holocaust. In this book, the reader is given a first-person narrative of life as a Jewish girl before the war, during the war, and after the war. Ms. Kor shares her life in the tiny village of Portz in Romania and the burgeoning discrimination and hatred of Jews prior to her imprisonment, then her life under a communist regime, and finally her arrival in Israel.

How can a story of such evil be heartwarming? Because Ms. Kor, after suffering and losing so much, showed unbelievable compassion and her characteristic strength when, fifty years after the liberation of Auschwitz, she stood where she had stood as a ten-year-old and publicly forgave Mengele. In doing so, she freed herself from being a victim. As unimaginable as it may be, this is not only a story of the atrocities and evil of the Nazis, but also a story of strength, hope, and forgiveness.

Tom is interested to find out if the grass is really greener in the country, and equally determined to get to the bottom of a dark family secret. Culture clashes notwithstanding, Tom gets his answers and some family truths are finally revealed. ‘The Million Second Quiz’ – A New Reality Show

NBC Logo

NBC describes their new 24/7 live competition series The Million Second Quiz as “electrifying” and “state-of-the-art” – I describe it as a series I’d never, ever voluntarily sign up for. The network is set to air the 12-day competition during primetime this fall.

According to NBC, the series will let viewers at home play the game in real-time along with the contestants.

Announcing the series, Paul Telegdy, President of Alternative and Late Night Programming at NBC Entertainment, stated: “The Million Second Quiz is a genre-redefining spectacle. It is a game, a social experiment, and a live interactive event all wrapped into a uniquely sticky entertainment experience. What is exceptional about The Million Second Quiz is that it embraces technology’s ability to allow everyone in America to actively participate and compete in a way that has never been done.”

The Plot Details:

The competition, where time equals money, will air in primetime, live from a gigantic hourglass-shaped structure in the heart of Manhattan. This hourglass will also serve as the living quarters of the reigning champions – the four players who have remained in the game the longest. They will have the opportunity to play along with the game for up to two weeks as other contestants attempt to unseat them during the primetime show.

The show will be the first fully convergent television experience, where viewers will be able to play along at home in real-time and sync to the live primetime broadcast.

The Million Second Quiz continues 24 hours a day. Contestants from all across America will be able to engage in the game with an unprecedented level of interactivity and win the chance to appear on the show in primetime.

The NBC affiliates will have the opportunity to interact live throughout the day and during the primetime show to be part of the action and showcase local contestants from their area.

The primetime show will feature nail-biting gameplay and a David vs. Goliath challenge to one of the reigning champions.

When the million seconds draw to a close, the champions will battle it out and the ultimate winner could claim an unprecedented cash prize of up to $10 million.

Dwayne Johnson is on the Mend

Post-surgery, Dwayne Johnson’s sense of humor is still intact. The Pain and Gain star had to miss that film’s Los Angeles premiere due to emergency surgery to repair three hernial tears which he received while squaring off against John Cena during a WWE fight. And according to The Rock, the surgery went fine and “Superman is on the mend.”

Johnson had previously tweeted the news that during the Wrestlemania match he tore his abdomen and abductor muscles off the bone. And on April 21st, Johnson had this to share with his fans:

“Saw my Dr who had to push my intestines back thru the tear in my abdomen. Kinda romantic.” – @TheRock

In addition to starring in this weekend’s Pain and Gain by director Michael Bay, Johnson’s been getting ready to tackle the lead role in Hercules.

New Poster: ‘Rush’ With Chris Hemsworth

Rush Movie Poster
Poster for ‘Rush’ (Photo © Universal Pictures)

Yes, this poster got my immediate attention… Chris Hemsworth’s handsome face is front and center on the poster for Rush, the dramatic film directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Frost/Nixon) from a script by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen). Although Hemsworth’s the only one featured on the poster, the cast also includes Daniel Brühl, Olivia Wilde, and Alexandra Maria Lara.

Universal’s aiming to open Rush in theaters on September 20, 2013.

The Plot: The epic action-drama stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives.

Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed—handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, Rush follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. If you make one mistake, you die.
