KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas Concerts 2012 Review

The annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas concerts, held on December 8th and 9th at the Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal City, Calif., are always one of the hottest tickets in town because it gives music fans the opportunity to not only see some of rock’s heaviest hitters as headliners (this year, included Linkin Park on Night #1 and Jack White and The Killers on Night #2), but also some of it’s most promising newer talent.

This year, it was especially nice to see so many women back on the bill, after being hard-pressed to find a single one, in recent years. Whether it was the snarl from Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson or Gwen Stefani’s delicate duet to “Glycerine” with husband Gavin Rossdale (who was there with his band, Bush), or various female musicians on drums, keyboard and guitars, there was a wide range of women taking control of the stage. Meanwhile, the understated beauty of Night #1 act The Lumineers was a nice contrast to harder rock acts, like Rise Against and AWOLNATION, and the reggae grooves of Slightly Stoopid. And closing act Linkin Park turned in an explosive hour-long set that was pitch-perfect and truly electric.

Night #2 kicked things off with Imagine Dragons, who had the pleasure of playing to an already packed house, and was followed by soulful singer Alex Clare, Icelandic act Of Monsters and Men, the quirky Neon Trees and dance-rock innovators M83, before fun. gave the place a more upbeat party atmosphere. After her one-song surprise appearance the first night, Gwen Stefani brought all of No Doubt out the second night, to turn in a high-energy set of all of the band’s biggest hits. And before The Killers brought down the house with their closing set, which was a perfect way to end the night, guitar virtuoso Jack White lost himself in the music in a way that only a born musician truly can.

Depeche Mode Announce New Album and European Tour

Depeche Mode will be releasing their 13th studio album in March 2013, according to Columbia Records. Details on each track haven’t been revealed yet (they promise more info on the album will be released shortly), however, Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore says, “I am very happy with how the album turned out. The music has a similar vibe to Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion and I think the songs on the album are among some of the very best we’ve done.”

The upcoming album features new tracks written by Gore and Dave Gahan. “The album has a very organic and direct feel to it. It’s not a blues record, but it definitely has a soulful vibe. During the recording process we really tried to get the elements of performing and the live show into the album more,” said Gahan.

The group also announced they’ll be heading out on a European tour in 2013 in support of the album, kicking off on May 7th at Tel Aviv’s Hayarkon Park. They’ll be performing in 25 European countries including performances at the Rock Werchter Festival in Belgium, BBK Festival in Spain, Optimus Alive Festival in Portugal, Rome’s Olympic Stadium, the Stade De France in Paris, and Moscow’s Locomotive Stadium.

The European tour will finish up on July 29th in Minsk, Belarus.

What Makes Zachary Quinto Such a Good Serial Killer?

No, not in real life – on TV. Get serious now. According to an interview American Horror Story‘s Zachary Quinto did with Conan O’Brien, it all has to do with one very prominent facial attribute. And Quinto also talked about a very special moment he shared with Star Trek nerd President Obama.

The initial trailer was all about the action and kind of reminded us of Will Smith’s Wild Wild West. However, this new The Lone Ranger trailer shifts the spotlight to the film’s stars – Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.

The new clip shows how the Lone Ranger (Hammer) and Tonto (Depp) met and sets up the relationship between the two characters. It also features Hammer as the Lone Ranger donning the iconic mask.

The Plot:

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ The Lone Ranger, a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice–taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.
