Bravo Revamping Heathers, Greenlights 4 Other Shows

BravoBravo has announced they’re moving forward with five new scripted dramas all currently in development, and one of the projects is already generating a massive amount of buzz. The 1980 film Heathers which starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater provides the basis for an updated, scripted series. The other shows in development are The Apartment, The Darlings, All American Girl, and Rita. The five new shows join previously announced projects The Joneses, 22 Birthdays, and Blowing Sunshine.

Announcing the new projects, Andrew Wang, Vice President for Scripted Development and Production, stated: “Through our growing slate of scripted development we plan to build upon the success of our award-winning unscripted programming , accessing and exploring new worlds and characters while still engaging the same affluent and pop culture savvy audience that watches the Real Housewives and Top Chef. We’re excited to partner with such high caliber talent in developing TV that pushes boundaries conceptually and thematically while still telling a fun story in the way that our audiences have come to expect from us.”

The New Scripted Development Projects:

Heathers

From Sony Pictures Television and writer and executive producer Mark Rizzo (The Man Date, Zip), executive producer Jenny Bicks (The Big C, Men In Trees) and Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi serving as executive producers for Lakeshore Entertainment.

Present day update of the cult classic 1980’s film that picks up 20 years later with Veronica (played by Winona Ryder in the film) moving back to Sherwood with her teenage daughter, who enters high school to deal with the next generation of mean girls, the “Ashleys,” daughters of the surviving “Heathers.”

The Apartment (working title)

From Uni TV and writer and executive producer, Jessica Queller (Gossip Girl, Gilmore Girls, Felicity) and executive produced by Karey Burke and Todd Holland (Go On, Free Agents) for Dark Toy Entertainment.

After the death of their mother, two 20-something siblings unexpectedly inherit the love nest where their mother had an 18 year affair. After the initial shock that their mother was not who they thought she was, they begin to rent out the beautiful Upper West Side apartment to people who want a private space to have their own extra-marital affairs.

The Darlings (working title)

From Fox Television Studios and written and executive produced by Stu Zicherman (Lights Out, What About Brian). Sarah Condon (Bored to Death) serves as executive producer.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Cristina Alger, the show is set on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where a high-society family is pulled into a financial scandal after a business partner’s Ponzi scheme unravels, which drives him to suicide and exposes all of the family’s and company’s secrets.

All American Girl

Produced by Fox Television Studios. Executive-produced by Chris Weitz, Paul Weitz and Andrew Miano for Depth of Field. Written by Jenni Ross (Hot Mess) who also serves as co-executive producer.

Based loosely on Ross’s mother’s stint as Fashion Editor at Seventeen magazine in the 1970s, drama spans three time periods and centers around three women who all work at the female lifestyle magazine All American Girl. Show tracks the changing points of view of women in the workplace, feminism and asks the question “can women have it all?”

Rita

Produced by Fox Television Studios. Written and executive produced by Krista Vernoff (Shameless, Grey’s Anatomy) with Henrik Bastin and Mikkel Bondesen (Burn Notice, The Killing) serving as executive producers for Fuse Entertainment 2.0.

An adaptation of the Danish format of the same name, this family drama follows an acerbic, outspoken private school teacher who struggles to raise her own three teenage children while dealing with the inane bureaucracy and overprotective parents at her school.

They’re back, as they so proudly sing in this Cougar Town cast music video.

Cougar Town moves to TBS and will be returning to primetime with new episodes beginning Tuesday, January 8, 2013. ABC canceled the series after three seasons of so-so ratings, but it’s found new life on basic cable’s TBS.

The Plot:

In Cougar Town, Courteney Cox stars as Jules Cobb, a recently divorced mom struggling with the challenges and pitfalls that come with a new chapter in her life. Jules spends much of her time enjoying wine with her group of friends known as the “cul de sac crew.” They include her under-achieving ex-husband, Bobby (Brian Van Holt); next-door neighbor and confidante Ellie (Christa Miller); Ellie’s loveably average husband, Andy (Ian Gomez); Jules’ fiancé and neighbor, Grayson (Josh Hopkins); and Jules’ feisty protégé, Laurie (Busy Philipps).

Meanwhile, Jules’ college-student son, Travis (Dan Byrd), often proves himself more adult than anyone in the group.

Fans of The Glades will be pleased to know A&E Network will be bringing the dramatic series back for season four. Viewers tuned in in big numbers for season three, up 5% from season two with an average audience of 4.1 million per new episode which made the decision to bring the show back pretty much a no-brainer.

Filming will begin soon on season four set to air in 2013.

The Glades stars Matt Passmore, Kiele Sanchez, Carlos Gómez, and Michelle Hurd and was created/executive produced by Clifton Campbell.

The Plot:

In The Glades, Matt Passmore stars as Jim Longworth, an attractive and brilliant Chicago homicide detective with a reputation for being difficult. When his captain wrongfully accuses him of sleeping with his wife and shoots him, he is exiled and forced to relocate. He lands in the sleepy, middle-of-nowhere town of Palm Glade, outside of the Florida Everglades, where sunshine and golf are plentiful and crime is seemingly at a minimum. But Longworth soon finds out this town isn’t quite as idyllic as he originally thought, when murders keep piling up.

As a huge fan of Dance Moms (although I wouldn’t want to actually be stuck in a room with any of the ‘moms’), I’m really looking forward to Abby Lee Miller’s new series. Miller will be the lead judge on the new Lifetime reality series, Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition, premiering on October 9, 2012 at 9pm. Joining Miller on the judging panel will be Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin and choreographer Richard Jackson.

12 young dancers between the ages of six and 13 will be showcased on the series. The winner of the new 10-episode dance competition will receive $100,000 and a scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet School.

Before the series kicks off at 9pm, Lifetime will air a special at 8pm focusing on the competition’s dancers as well as their moms (please let them not be crazy!) and the judges.

The Details [Courtesy of Lifetime]:

Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition will begin by following a dozen aspiring dancers who will learn new routines and compete in a number of challenges designed to test their skills when they perform before Miller, Antin and Jackson, as well as a live audience, at the historic Los Angeles Theatre. Along the way, each competitor will be accompanied and coached by his or her own mother, who will make critical training, costume, music and choreographic decisions for their child while also navigating the precarious waters of the other highly competitive parents. As Miller, Antin and Jackson must make the sometimes easy and other times difficult decision to eliminate one dancer each week, the intense on stage competition and stakes between dancers and mothers increase throughout the season – culminating with a finale performance that assuredly will change the winning dancer’s life forever.

Adventure Time writer/storyboard artist Rebecca Sugar and Emmy nominee Pete Browngardt have been given the greenlight by Cartoon Network to move ahead on two new animated shows. Sugar’s Steven Universe and Browngardt’s Uncle Grandpa were created as part of the “shorts development initiative” at Cartoon Network Studios and are both in pre-production. Cartoon Network’s aiming for a 2013 premiere of the two new series.

Steven Universe and Uncle Grandpa will build upon our record-breaking streak with original programming, and further define the voice for Cartoon Network Studios comedies,” said Cartoon Network Chief Content Officer Rob Sorcher. “Rebecca and Pete represent our next generation of homegrown talent, following Pen Ward and JG Quintel who set a high bar with their distinctive visual storytelling and unique comedic styles.”

Per Cartoon Network: “Steven Universe is a coming-of-age story told from the perspective of Steven, the youngest member of a team of magical Guardians of the Universe.”

Uncle Grandpa is “based upon the Emmy®-nominated short of the same name and follows the exploits of Uncle Grandpa—everyone in the world’s “magical’ uncle and grandpa.”

In other news, according to the network this summer was their most-watched in history.
