Hilary Swank and Brenda Blethyn are now busy at work on HBO Films’ Mary and Martha, written by Richard Curtis (Bridget Jones’s Diary, Love Actually) and directed by Phillip Noyce (Salt). Filming is taking place in South Africa and North Carolina.

The cast also includes Frank Grillo, Ian Redford, and Stephanie Faracy.

Commenting on the film, writer Curtis stated, “I’ve always wanted to write a film about the fact that when you have children, there’s always the possibility of extreme joy and extreme sorrow. And over the years, working with Comic Relief, I have come across the tragedy of the startling number of lives taken by malaria every year. This film gives me a chance to write about that too, as well as working with a team of people I hugely admire – Brenda Blethyn, Hilary Swank, and the great Australian director, Phillip Noyce.”

“We were especially attracted to Richard Curtis’ approach to the story – bringing a human touch to this serious and often overlooked issue about a disease that is preventable and can be eradicated,” said HBO Films President Len Amato. “In the hands of Philip Noyce, directing these two gifted actresses, the difficult subject matter becomes upliftingly accessible, yet profoundly powerful.”

The Plot:

Hilary Swank stars as Mary and Brenda Blethyn stars as Martha, an American and an Englishwoman who have little in common apart from the one thing they wish they hadn’t – both have lost sons to malaria. Promising adventure and fun, Mary took her young son, George, to Africa, where he subsequently contracted the disease, while Martha’s son, Ben, died while working as a volunteer at an orphanage in Mozambique. When the two immensely different women meet in Africa, they bond over their shared personal loss. Forging a deep friendship, they vow to dedicate themselves to the cause of malaria prevention, realizing that, as mothers, they have a responsibility to all the world’s children.

‘Delayed Reaction’ From Soul Asylum is Here

Soul Asylum Delayed Reaction

And by “here” I mean it’s in stores now.

Soul Asylum’s first album in six years (Delayed Reaction) drops today featuring a new ‘recalibrated’ lineup led by founders Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy. Ex-Replacements/ex-Guns N’ Roses bassist Tommy Stinson subs in for Karl Mueller who passed away in 2006, and Prince’s former drummer Michael Bland is also part of this new Soul Asylum lineup.

Recorded in LA, New Orleans, and Minneapolis, Delayed Reaction was produced by the band. “It feels like approaching it as an album and a thing that has a sequence, and a thing that is a piece of work in itself is almost an archaic process… Honestly, it’s more organic,” said Pirner. “Even though you’re using some of this newer technology, the fact that you’re doing it yourself is what made it take so long and the process unique, this time.”

Delayed Reaction Track Listing:

1. Gravity
2. Into The Light
3. The Streets
4. By The Way
5. Pipe Dream
6. Let’s All Kill Each Other
7. Cruel Intentions
8. The Juice
9. Take Manhattan
10. I Should’ve Stayed In Bed

‘Silent Hill’ Coming to Halloween Horror Nights

Silent Hill at Halloween Horror Nights

Just because we’re in the middle of the hot summer months doesn’t mean it’s too early to start making your Halloween plans. Universal Studios announced they’re bringing the world of Silent Hill alive during their annual Halloween Horror Nights events at both Universal Studios Florida and Universal Studios Hollywood. Both theme parks will feature a haunted maze inspired by the video game franchise.

Silent Hill has terrified fans for over a decade by pioneering psychological horror genre first through video games and moving into films and graphic novels,” said Careen Yapp, Vice President Acquisitions and Franchise Development of Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. “Now we’re giving fans the next evolution of terror as we work with the Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights teams to create a real-world Silent Hill experience just as terrifying as the fans have come to expect.”

“We can’t wait to watch our guests actually walk into the hell that is Silent Hill,” added Jim Timon, Senior Vice President of Entertainment at Universal Orlando Resort.

In case you’re not familiar with Silent Hill, here’s the official synopsis: “Konami’s ground-breaking Silent Hill series is heralded for its psychologically-charged, horrific plot, which is centered around the disturbing, ash-covered town of Silent Hill – a place where reality gives way to other dimensions. In this demonic world the physical laws of nature no longer apply and nightmarish monsters abound. Characters try to escape back to the safety of reality but constant brutal attacks by disjointed, knife-wielding beings make survival seem impossible.”

The second Silent Hill movie, Silent Hill: Revelation, opens in theaters on October 26, 2012.
