More on Garth Brooks [Courtesy of Wynn Las Vegas]:

Certified by the RIAA in 2000 as the #1-selling solo artist in U.S. history, Garth Brooks has sold in excess of 128 million albums and has received every accolade the recording industry can bestow on an artist.

In 2001, Brooks retired and moved back to Oklahoma to raise his children. In 2008, The President Elect, himself, requested that Brooks headline President Obama’s Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. A crowd of over 300,000 did the “wave” to Brooks’ performance of “Shout” while the President sang along. That same year, the Governor of California asked Brooks to help the state. He performed five concerts in two days with the proceeds from 83,000 tickets donated to efforts to prevent fire catastrophes. Portions of the live concerts were shown as a TV special, Garth Brooks: Live in L.A. allowing viewers to donate as well.

In December 2010, Brooks finished an astonishing nine sold out concerts in six days to raise money for the flood relief efforts in Tennessee. ABC World News Tonight declared Brooks “The Person of the Week” and the Mayor of Nashville announced that this was a record December for downtown Nashville merchants due to the over 145,000 who attended the concerts.

In January 2012, he was named the best-selling artist of the last two decades by Billboard, Nielsen and SoundScan, with a whopping 68.5 million sales. Brooks was recently inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame and will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this fall. Brooks also sold out his upcoming appearance at the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede. All 15,000+ seats sold out in less than a minute.

NBC Prepares a New Vocal Game Show, The Winner Is

NBC LogoBecause there just aren’t enough singing competitions on television, NBC has just announced the vocal game show The Winner Is will be added to the mix. The show has just been greenlit by the network and will showcase singers of all ages – soloists as well as groups. The contestants, who can be professionals, will be competing for a $1 million cash prize.

Announcing the new series, Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Late Night Programming, NBC, stated, “We are thrilled to be working with John de Mol, the creator and one of the producers of The Voice, on this original singing game show that will feature a broad range of talent, dueling performers and the surprise of in-the-moment negotiations and decisions. Talented singers and the show’s surprising competitive twist, with the possibility of negotiating a deal to step out of the game, will have viewers engaged and entertained.”

Per NBC: “The contestants will be judged by a special in-studio panel led by one celebrity judge (to be announced) as they compete for an ultimate cash prize of $1 million. In a unique twist, they will have the chance to negotiate a deal with their opponent. Before hearing their fate the contestants can choose to step out of the competition in exchange for a predetermined cash prize or continue on in the game.

The show’s competing singers will be given the chance to become rich in record time. After each singing duel, both opposing performances will be judged. The contestants will then have the option of making a deal. If they have doubts about how they have measured up against their opponent, they can leave the show — in exchange for the instant cash that round is worth. But if they’re confident they performed better than their opponent, they can await the jury results to see if they’ve made it to the next round and a step closer to the $1 million in ultimate prize money.

Singing contestants need to be confident of their own talent but shouldn’t underestimate their opponents. There’s a lot at stake: the amount of money each duel is worth increases with every round, right up until the finale.

In the finale, eight singers will duel and negotiate. They continue to compete until just two amazing singing contestants remain. Then the two finalists must make a crucial decision. After their performance, they each get the chance to walk away with $100,000 — or they can risk losing that huge amount of cash by awaiting the jury vote and the votes from the viewers for the chance to win the $1 million prize.”

Spotlight On: Jana Kramer

Jana Kramer
Jana Kramer - Photo by Bryan Allen

Jana Kramer insists she has a Michigan accent, especially when she says “Oh, geez!” True, she does hail from Rochester Hills, north of the Motor City. But when she sings Country, she sounds like someone who’s right at home drawling “y’all.”

Just listen to “Why Ya Wanna,” from her self-titled debut album, scheduled to release June 5 on Elektra Nashville. Written by Catt Gravitt, Christopher Destefano and Ashley Gorley, it’s a tricky number in some ways, with a catchy swaying beat that contrasts with heartbreak lyrics. Yet Kramer finds the pocket between these two qualities, never losing hold of or overselling the melody. There’s a conversational element to her vocal, with dropped “g”s and artfully shaded vowels; listening, it feels like she’s both commanding the stage and sharing her thoughts with a best friend.

We hear this same believability in the dance-friendly “What I Love about Your Love” (Brian Dean Maher, Skip Black and Laura Veltz). This time Kramer delivers a playful rumination on romance (“It puts the ‘hon’ in my honey”) as the band locks onto a medium-tempo groove. And here, too, her sunny, intimate spell feels much more Tennessee Titans than Detroit Lions.

Actually, none of this is surprising. Kramer was raised on a musical diet of Patsy Cline, which she listened to while baking cookies with her grandmother. And she knows how to get into a lyric. As Alex Dupre on The CW’s “One Tree Hill,” and on previous appearances in NBC’s “Friday Night lights,” HBO’s “Entourage” and The CW’s “90210,” Kramer has applied her acting skills to tap the essence of her role.

Does she do the same through her music? As folks back home might answer, “Yeah, you bet’cha.”

IN HER OWN WORDS

MUSICAL HERO
“James Taylor.”

DREAM DUET PARTNER
“Johnny Cash, but since that can’t happen, I’d say Adam Levine.”

SONG YOU’D LOVE TO COVER
“‘Strawberry Wine,’ by Matraca Berg.”

SONG YOU SING IN THE SHOWER
“Anything and everything, from Gaga to opera.”

BOOK ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND
“Jesus Calling, by Sarah Young.”

FAVORITE FOOD ON THE ROAD
“My favorite food is sushi. If I can’t find that, then I’ll try to have salmon.”

FAVORITE MODE OF TRANSPORTATION
“Jet ski, then boat, then car.”

LUCKY CHARM
“My dogs.”

FIRST GIG
“It was a train wreck! I was so nervous and bombed big time. The bright side: Up was the only way to go from there ;).”

SOMETHING WE’D NEVER GUESS ABOUT YOU
“I speak German. Sprechen sie Deutsch?”
