More on Viola Davis [Courtesy of SBIFF]:

Davis captivated audiences and critics alike last summer with her portrayal of African-American housemaid “Aibileen Clark.” Set in Jackson, Mississippi, during the 1960s, The Help chronicles the relationship between three different and extraordinary women who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. Deeply moving, filled with humor, hope and heart, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.

In 2008’s Doubt, Davis rendered audiences heartbroken with her performance as a troubled mother, forced to make a difficult decision to secure a future for her young son. Garnering wide critical acclaim, Davis’ work in the film solidified her as one of Hollywood’s most talented actors, and earned her nominations for an Academy Award, Golden Globe® and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress. Davis first landed on the big screen as a social worker in the Academy Award® nominated film Traffic. Shortly thereafter in 2002, Davis appeared in pivotal roles in Steven Soderbergh’s sci-fi drama, Solaris, opposite George Clooney, Far From Heaven, opposite Julianne Moore and Antwone Fisher which garnered Davis and Independent Spirit Award for “Best Supporting Actress.”

Demonstrating great versatility in her craft, Davis played a grandmother in 2005’s Get Rich or Die Trying and a community activist in The Architect (2006). A stream of projects followed including roles in Tyler Perry’s comedy Madea Goes to Jail, and dramatic roles in State of Play, Law Abiding Citizen, Nights in Rodanthe and It’s Kind of a Funny Story. Proving once again to hold her own amongst the Hollywood elite, Davis appeared alongside Julia Roberts in the big screen version of the bestselling novel Eat Pray Love (2010). Later this year, Davis will be seen in the highly anticipated Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close with Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. In March 2012, Davis stars in Won’t Back Down alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal and Holly Hunter.

USA Sets Common Law Premiere Date and the Return of White Collar

USA Network just announced White Collar will be returning on January 17, 2012 at 10/9c with Royal Pains back on the schedule beginning January 18th. The network has also set a January 26th premiere date for their new original series, Common Law.

Common Law – The Plot:

The new original series Common Law kicks into high gear when two cops discover they have one problem – each other. Despite their differences, they are still the best detectives on the force but when things come to a head on the eve of their “seven-year itch,” their captain forces them into couples’ therapy to save their “marriage.” The 12-episode one-hour series stars Michael Ealy (The Good Wife, Californication), Warren Kole (The Chicago Code, 24), Jack McGee (The Fighter, Rescue Me) and Sonya Walger (Lost, In Treatment) and is currently in production in New Orleans.

Travis Marks (Michael Ealy) and Wes Mitchell (Warren Kole) are a pair of odd couple detectives who are incredible at what they love most – enforcing the law. The duo has a seven-year track record as the LAPD’s finest in the Robbery-Homicide Division. As their constant bickering begins to have a major impact on their work, their new-age captain (Jack McGee) sends them to couples’ therapy to bring back the flame in their “work marriage.” Tough-as-nails therapist Dr. Ryan (Sonya Walger) is brought in to help them understand and resolve their conflicts and confront their demons in order to enhance their ability to work together solving crimes.

As Dr. Ryan explores their relationship, we find out these two are birds of a feather professionally, and their personal differences actually balance them out. Wes is a former lawyer whose sensitivity to an event in his life sparked his desire to become a cop but sacrificed his marriage in the process. He sees things in black and white, is responsible, compulsively organized, methodical and often over thinks decisions. Travis is a former juvenile delinquent and a maverick ladies man who has a fear of abandonment, commitment and intimacy. While he’s an open book and deeply trusts his gut instincts, he’s carefree, irresponsible, disorganized and doesn’t play by the rules. We soon learn that a successful relationship or partnership doesn’t mean you have to like the same things; you just have to hate the same things and sometimes that makes for a stronger union.

White Collar Season 3 Synopsis:

Season three of White Collar returns from its summer cliffhanger for its winter premiere of six edge-of-your seat episodes starring Matt Bomer, Tim DeKay, Tiffani Thiessen, Willie Garson, Marsha Thomason, Hilarie Burton and Sharif Atkins. In the shocking summer finale, Peter Burke’s (DeKay) world crumbled to pieces when he found out Neal (Bomer) was in possession of the stolen Nazi treasure and his wife Elizabeth (Thiessen) was kidnapped because of it. Now with an uncertain future and both his personal and professional life at stake, what will Peter do? What has happened to Elizabeth? And will Neal choose a side? The upcoming second half of the third season features the directorial debut of series star DeKay and appearances by guest stars including Joe Manganiello, Dylan Baker, Beau Bridges, Tom Skerritt, Hal Ozsan, Ross McCall, Diahann Carroll, Elizabeth Gillies, Graham Phillips, Lola Glaudini, Will Chase, Murphy Guyer, Tom Degnan, Bailey Chase and Debra Monk.

In White Collar’s third season, charming con man Neal Caffrey uses his talents to keep everyone guessing as to which side he’s really on. When love interest and insurance investigator Sara Ellis (Burton) finds out Neal and Mozzie (Garson) have the stolen treasure, she walks away and Neal is forced to figure out if his relationships are more important than the life of a criminal. White Collar was created by and is executive produced by Jeff Eastin and comes from Fox Television Studios. Mark Goffman is an executive producer and Jeff King is a co-executive producer. The series, which averaged 5.7 million total viewers this summer, has already been green lit for a fourth season to start production in New York in early 2012.

Royal Pains Details:

The network’s highest rated series Royal Pains, starring Mark Feuerstein, Paulo Costanzo and Reshma Shetty, returns with six new episodes with a season finale that will have viewers and fans on the edge of their seats. In the summer cliffhanger, Hank attended to an unconscious Eric Kassabian (guest star Wilmer Valderrama) who appeared to have been given the wrong medicine by Dr. Van Dyke (guest star Kyle Howard) and Divya (Shetty). When the series picks up, HankMed is in danger of losing his first patient as Kassabian’s life hangs in the balance. Things in the Hamptons get even more tense as Divya juggles two jobs; Evan (Costanzo) works to fit into his fiancée’s complicated family life and Jill (Flint) continues to hide Divya’s work secret. Golden Globe nominee Tom Cavanagh returns with an award-worthy performance in a multi-episode story arc as Jack O’Malley, professional golfer and HankMed client. Celebrate the Season with CMA Country Christmas

As TV viewers took in the final moments of ABC’s live broadcast of The 45th Annual CMA Awards on Wednesday, Nov. 9, and as the last audience members filed out from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, one might have imagined that lights dimmed throughout the venue and a long night’s work came to an end.

Not at all. Co-hosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood had just finished waving goodbye as the backstage crew sprinted into action, moving sets and scenery, bringing Christmas-season decorations out from the wings and onto the stage. Work continued throughout the night and the following day, up to the moment when taping began for the 2011 CMA Country Christmas, which airs Thursday, Dec. 21, 9PM/ET on ABC Television.

According to Executive Producer Robert Deaton, overseeing two major television specials on consecutive nights actually makes the job easier. “Shooting the day after the Awards provides us the unique opportunity to produce a very high-end, polished-looking show,” he said. “We would never be able to do it otherwise because we can take advantage of having all our 17 cameras, all the screens that are in the Awards set, the crew and everything else. So therefore we get a show that looks 10 times better than it would look as a standalone by incorporating the economies of scale.”

For all he’s done on the two older CMA television broadcasts, the live Awards show and the taped CMA Music Festival: Country Music’s Biggest Night, Deaton has a special affection for CMA Country Christmas. Why? Well, it’s Christmas!

“My dream was always to do a special at Christmastime that was reminiscent of the specials of Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Judy Garland, where it was very warm and open and there was interaction between the artists,” he explained. “You would literally stop between songs and do an interview maybe in a living room because Christmas is the one time of the year where you can be reflective and a bit sentimental.”

That was the concept Deaton brought to ABC when discussions began on what would become the first CMA Country Christmas, aired in 2010. Among the initial concerns was whether today’s viewers would respond to the old-school model that he embraced. Then, having resolved to give it a shot, a more creative question arose: With two other annual CMA television spectaculars already established, how could the new addition stand out with its own identity?

“It’s different from the Festival broadcast, for example, whose tag line is ‘Country Music’s Night to Rock,’” he observed. “For that show, we put the pedal to the metal and we don’t let up. For this one, we began by making sure it’s a CMA Christmas special, not a holiday special. We wanted it to be something the whole family could watch without having to worry about whether somebody is going to say something off-color.”

To achieve that goal, Deaton again reached back to the classic Christmas specials. “I looked at old tapes and I saw, for example, one part of a Judy Garland special where she was sitting around the piano with Mel Tormé. They were just talking back and forth, almost like the cameras weren’t there. So I thought it would be very cool, when we introduced Reba in last year’s show, that Jennifer Nettles would be standing right beside her and they’d just talk about what they like about Christmas. Those kinds of moments don’t just happen. You have to craft them out far in advance.”

The 2010 special was an auspicious debut, with ABC drawing 18 percent more viewers than Fox and 12 percent more than NBC during that time slot, which persuaded the network to re-air the show a few weeks later, again in prime time. It also made it definite that Nettles, selected to serve as host, would be called back to duty for 2011.

“Jennifer is absolutely fantastic,” Deaton said. “What you see is what you get with her. She’s a dynamic performer. Onstage, she is always up, always smiling and engaging with her fans. She’s the most positive person, I think, I’ve ever met, and I felt that would come across on camera. Those were all qualities I thought we needed for the Christmas special, and she is a big contributor to the overall feel.”

Along with Nettles reprising her role, CMA Country Christmas this year will feature an all-star assembly of artists, including Lauren Alaina, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Little Big Town, Scotty McCreery, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Darius Rucker, Brian Setzer, Sugarland, Keith Urban and more.

The 45th Annual CMA Awards is a production of the Country Music Association. Robert Deaton is the Executive Producer. Paul Miller is the Director. The special will be shot in high definition and broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format, with 5.1 channel surround sound.

Michelle Williams is garnering Oscar buzz for her starring role as Marilyn Monroe in the dramatic film My Week with Marilyn, based on true events and co-starring Eddie Redmayne and Kenneth Branagh. And in this video courtesy of The Weinstein Company, Williams talks about the appeal of playing Marilyn, the real Marilyn’s voice and walk, her admiration for the iconic actress, and why she really loves this film.

The Plot: In the early summer of 1956, 23 year-old Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), just down from Oxford and determined to make his way in the film business, worked as a lowly assistant on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl. The film
that famously united Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) and Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams), who was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Aurthur Miller (Dougray Scott).

Nearly 40 years on, his diary account The Prince, the Showgirl and Me was published, but one week was missing and this was published some years later as My Week with Marilyn this is the story of that week. When Arthur Miller leaves England, the coast is clear for Colin to introduce Marilyn to some of the pleasures of British life; an idyllic week in which he escorted
