Adele, Katy Perry are the Big Winners at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards were kicked off by Lady Gaga in drag, dressed up like a ’50s greaser complete with pompadour wig. Smoking a cigarette, ‘Jo Calderone’ delivered a rambling monologue all about Lady Gaga before performing “You and I” with an assist from Queen’s Brian May on guitar.

The performance wasn’t exactly well received by the audience (the camera couldn’t seem to find anyone really into it to focus on, and at one point, settled on Justin Bieber, who looked bored and/or confused). Jo even fell off the piano after coating it with some sort of liquid. Above all, it just seemed…well…awkward.

The VMAs went downhill fast from there, with only a few performances living up to their pre-show hype.

The show’s few standout moments included Beyonce’s confirmation that she’s pregnant (she announced it on the red carpet and then took off her jacket after performing “Love on Top” during the show and rubbed her belly) and Adele’s very classy performance of “Someone Like You.” The moving tribute to the late Amy Winehouse by Tony Bennett, Bruno Mars and Russell Brand had many in the audience in tears, with the touching memorial salute featuring never before seen footage of Winehouse’s final performance (the Winehouse/Bennett duet on “Body and Soul”) and Bruno Mars performing Winehouse’s hit, “Valerie.”

Ultimately, the night was all about the ladies with Katy Perry and Adele taking home three Moonmen each.

Brad Pitt Comes to the Rescue on ‘World War Z’ Set

Kate Winslet helped rescue Richard Branson’s mother, Ryan Gosling came to the aid of a man being beaten up over a painting, and now Brad Pitt’s reportedly rescued an extra on the set of World War Z. The Scottish Sun says Pitt helped a young woman who was knocked down while they were shooting a scene with 700 extras in Glasgow’s George Square. She could have been trampled by the crowd had Pitt not come to her rescue.

Brad Pitt and the unknown extra didn’t have time to really talk about what happened during the scene, but she’s thankful for his assistance. “He didn’t have time to speak to her as it was mid-shoot. But she said afterward how grateful she was, despite having a badly-grazed knee,” an insider on the set told The Scottish Sun.

Apparently, the woman Pitt stopped to help to her feet wasn’t the only extra who was injured on the set of the zombie movie. The Scottish Sun reports a source in the know told them, “Loads of extras suffered bumps and scrapes during the battle scene. There was no training or choreography before the chase on Wednesday morning. An extra playing a soldier was even hit by a moving car, ending up on the vehicle’s bonnet, but fortunately he escaped unhurt.”

World War Z is directed by Marc Forster (Machine Gun Preacher) and also stars Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, Matthew Fox, and Daniella Kertesz. Paramount’s aiming for a December 21, 2012 release.

The Plot: “The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself. Enos plays Gerry’s wife Karen Lane; Kertesz is his comrade in arms, Segen.”

Jason Derulo Reveals ‘Future History’ Track List

Jason Derulo’s second album, Future History, is set for release on September 27, 2011, and the singer/songwriter has just released the track list for his sophomore record. Two songs off the upcoming album – “It Girl” and “Don’t Wanna Go Home” (watch the video below) – have already been released.

In addition to the standard CD, Derulo’s Future History will have a Deluxe Edition (available for pre-order at jasonderulo.com) featuring an autographed CD, instant digital download of “It Girl,” two bonus digital tracks, and remixes of the singles.

Derulo wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on Future History by himself or with Kara Dioguardi, The Dream, and Claude Kelly. “On this album, I just wanted to be me,” explained Derulo. “I was 19 before, and now I’m 21, and I’ve really kind of found myself. So you can hear a whole new person, a new being almost.”

More on Jason Derulo [courtesy of Warner Bros Records]:

“‘Don’t Wanna Go Home’ and ‘It Girl’ are Derulo’s first new tracks since he established himself as a pop sensation with a string of red-hot hits last year: ‘Whatcha Say’ (which spent four consecutive weeks atop the Pop chart and has sold 3.5 million copies), ‘In My Head’ (2.7 million sold), and ‘Ridin’ Solo’ (2.5 million sold) off his self-titled debut album, Jason Derulo. Derulo, who has sold more than 13 million singles and 850,000 albums worldwide, is the first male solo artist to score consecutive No. 1’s on Billboard’s Pop Songs radio airplay chart in the chart’s 17-year history with his first two entries.

Derulo won five awards at the 2011 BMI Pop Awards, including Songwriter of the Year, which he shared with Lady Gaga and his debut album’s producer JR Rotem.”

‘Our Idiot Brother’ – Elizabeth Banks Interview

Elizabeth Banks reunites with Paul Rudd for the fifth time with Our Idiot Brother, an R-rated comedy also starring Emily Mortimer, Zooey Deschanel, and Steve Coogan. Banks plays one of the sisters of the ‘idiot’ brother referenced in the title of the movie, and in this video interview provided by The Weinstein Company, she talks about the appeal of the film.

Banks also discusses the story, the cast, what she has in common with her character, the film’s message, and if she knows anyone like the character Paul Rudd plays in the movie.

The Plot: Every family has one: the sibling who is always just a little bit behind the curve when it comes to getting his life together. For sisters Liz (Emily Mortimer), Miranda (Elizabeth Banks) and Natalie (Zooey Deschanel), that person is their perennially upbeat brother Ned (Paul Rudd), an erstwhile organic farmer whose willingness to rely on the honesty of mankind is a less-than-optimum strategy for a tidy, trouble-free existence.

Ned may be utterly lacking in common sense, but he is their brother, and so, after his girlfriend dumps him and boots him off the farm, his sisters once again come to his rescue. As Liz, Miranda, and Natalie each take a turn at housing Ned, their brother’s unfailing commitment to honesty creates more than a few messes in their comfortable routines. But as each of their lives begins to unravel, Ned’s family comes to realize that maybe, in believing and trusting the people around him; Ned isn’t such an idiot after all.

Fireflies in the Garden, the dramatic film based on the Robert Frost poem, is finally going to be screened in theaters on October 14, 2011. The film was shot back in 2007 – yes, 2007! – and debuted at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival. Although it’s been seen in different countries since then, Fireflies in the Garden never had a theatrical run in the US due to the production company shuttering its doors. The filmmakers are now doing the job of bringing the movie to theaters themselves, starting with a limited release in LA, New York, Chicago and San Francisco on October 14th.

“I am so pleased our film will finally get a theatrical release in the U.S.,” said first-time feature film writer/director Dennis Lee in a press release announcing the October 14th date. “Anyone familiar with our story knows the road to this moment has been paved with challenges. It’s not lost on me how much care and determination it took to bring Fireflies to light. I am so grateful for all the support I’ve received.”

Fireflies in the Garden stars Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson and Carrie-Anne Moss.
