Mike Mills’ touching indie comedy/drama Beginners is based on his own life experiences, in particular his relationship with his father. Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor channel a father and son dynamic for the June 3, 2011 theatrical release.

The R-rated comedy/drama also stars Melanie Laurent as Anna, Goran Visnjic as Andy, Kai Lennox as Elliot, Mary Page Keller as Georgia, and Keegan Boos as the young Oliver. China Shavers, Melissa Tang, Amanda Payton, Lou Taylor Pucci, Reynaldo Pacheco, Jodi Long, and Bruce French are also featured.

Official Synopsis:  Oliver (McGregor) meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Laurent) only months after his father Hal (Plummer) has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who – following 44 years of marriage – came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal’s new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they’d ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him.

‘The Help’ Featurette with Emma Stone

DreamWorks Pictures has provided a look behind-the-scenes with this featurette from the dramatic film The Help. Based on the bestselling novel by Kathryn Stockett, The Help stars Emma Stone as a college graduate who wants to be a writer. Her close-minded Southern friends don’t believe that’s the right goal for a woman in the 1960s.

The much-anticipated film also features Viola Davis (‘Aibileen’), Octavia Spencer (‘Minny’), Bryce Dallas Howard (‘Hilly Holbrook’), Jessica Chastain (‘Celia Foote’), Ahna O’Reilly (‘Elizabeth’), and Sissy Spacek (‘Mrs Walters’).

The Plot: Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, The Help stars Emma Stone as Skeeter, a southern society girl who returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends’ lives — and a small Mississippi town — upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families.

Viola Davis stars as Aibileen, Skeeter’s best friend’s housekeeper, who is the first to open up—to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community. Despite Skeeter’s life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue their collaboration and soon, more women come forward to tell their stories—and as it turns out, they have a lot to say. Along the way, unlikely friendships are forged and a new sisterhood emerges, but not before everyone in town has a thing or two to say themselves when they become unwittingly — and unwillingly — caught up in the changing times.

‘Teen Wolf’ Season 1 Trailer

Vampires aren’t the only creatures feeling some love from audiences. MTV’s hoping TV viewers will be just as accepting of werewolves as they have been of the bloodsuckers, bringing back Teen Wolf but with more bite than the ’80s film which sort of inspired it.

The Plot: Scott’s a young high school sophomore who has always been on the outside looking in. No girlfriend, bad at sports, and socially awkward. But a single wolf bite changes everything. Now Scott has super-human abilities which lead him to become the star of his lacrosse team. His athletic prowess also makes him popular and desirable, and he falls for the new girl in town, Allison, who’s equally smitten. But Scott’s “new” personality and abilities also pose several problems, including being pulled into the middle of a war between werewolves and werewolf hunters, the leader of which is the father of Allison.

Now Scott must try to curb his animalistic desires and urges while trying to maintain his relationship with Allison and his best friend Stiles, not to mention his family and society at large.

Teen Wolf season one premieres on June 5, 2011. The cast includes Tyler Posey as Scott, Crystal Reed as Allison, Dylan O’Brien as Stiles, Tyler Hoechlin as Derek, and Lydia Martin as Holland.

‘Mental’ Starring Toni Collette Finds Financing

Arclight Films and Singapore’s IFS Capital Limited (“IFS”) will be co-financing Mental, which marks their second collaboration. The film also marks the reunion of Muriel’s Wedding director P.J. Hogan with that film’s star: Toni Collette. Filming’s expected to begin this summer in Australia.

Hogan also wrote the script, inspired by his own experiences. “Like Muriel’s Wedding, Mental is a comedy, but a comedy based on reality, laced with pain and brimming with flawed but lovable characters. Shaz (the central character) was hilarious, outrageous, dangerous, courageous, inspiring, heartbreaking and totally, totally mad. And she changed my life,” Hogan said.

Jerry Zucker (Airplane, Naked Gun, My Best Friend’s Wedding) and Janet Zucker will produce Mental along with Todd Fellman and Jocelyn Moorhouse. Arclight’s Gary Hamilton will serve as the picture’s executive producer.

Hamilton, Arclight’s managing director, in summing up the combination, observed that “Pairing P.J. Hogan, one of Australia’s most accomplished directors, with Toni Collette, an actress who is equally adept at drama and comedy and one who has achieved both commercial and critical success with equal facility, presents a rare and wonderful opportunity to make a picture that is destined to be both artistically important and a hit at the box office.”

Arclight is also repping international sales on the recently-completed first Chinese-Australian co-production 33 Postcards, which was also financed by IFS. 33 Postcards was directed and co-written by Pauline Chan, and stars Guy Pearce, Zhu Lin and Lincoln Lewis. Pearce portrays Dean Randall who has sponsored Mei Mei, a young Chinese orphan, for many years. When Mei Mei arrives in Sydney out of the blue to thank him, their lives are changed forever.

Marine Asks Mila Kunis on a Date

Well, this is one way to get a date. Sergeant Scott Moore took time out of his day patrolling in Afghanistan with the 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines in Musa Qala to ask Mila Kunis for a date – and not just a simple stop at a coffee shop. No, Sgt Moore went all in, asking That ’70s Show star Mila Kunis (soon to be seen in Friends with Benefits) to accompany him to the Marine Corps Ball in Greenville, NC on November 18, 2011.

Sgt Moore’s video posted on Youtube caught fire and caught the attention of Kunis and her Friends with Benefits co-star Justin Timberlake who took the opportunity on Fox News to tell Kunis she should go for it. Kunis ultimately said yes, something I’m willing to bet Sgt. Moore never actually believed would happen.

‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ Ultimate 2-Disc Edition Blu-ray Review

X-Men Origins Wolverine Blu-ray review

Hugh Jackman’s back as the steely-clawed mutant who fights the good fight in this spin-off from the super successful X-Men film franchise: X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Although the film didn’t quite live up to its hype, Jackman and X-Men newcomers Liev Schreiber and Ryan Reynolds make it one worth checking out.

Pros:

– What the film lacks in action, the Blu-ray release makes up for in entertaining extra features. Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber are terrific as mutants

Cons:

Wolverine doesn’t live up to expectations, but it’s still a decent comic book-inspired adaptation.

Description:

– Starring Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Lynn Collins, and Taylor Kitsch
– Directed by Gavin Hood
– Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence and some partial nudity
– Blu-ray/DVD Release Date: September 15, 2009

The Story:

X-Men Origins: Wolverine focuses on one of the most interesting mutants from the series, providing a look at his family life and how he came to fight on the side of what’s good and wholesome. The film also introduces us to Logan/Wolverine’s brother Victor/Sabretooth (Schreiber) and unveils Victor Creed’s mysterious Weapon X program.

The Bonus Features:

Although Jackman doesn’t provide an audio commentary, director Gavin Hood does one on his own, with producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winters contributing their own separate track. Skip theirs and listen to Hood’s. He gives in-depth explanations as to the choices he made, just what X-Men fans want to know.

The featurettes include X-Men creator Stan Lee and Wolverine co-creator Len Wein sitting down for a lengthy chat which is a must-watch, even for those not into comics. “Wolverine Unleashed” is an insightful piece on the character’s origin and Jackman’s dedication in getting into the role, and “Thrill of the Chase” is a behind-the-scenes look at the helicopter sequence. The multi-part feature “Weapon X Mutant Files” explores all of the central characters, with interviews and other background material.

I suggest watching the four deleted scenes and an alternate ending with the optional commentary by director Hood turned on. His thoughts as to the direction of the story and why these didn’t work are well worth listening to. The disc also includes “Ultimate X Mode” with pop-up tracks and a live look-up feature that lets you access IMDB.com using the BD-Live feature. It’s state of the art and allows for easy access to the info you need/want/might enjoy looking up.

Wolverine looks just as gorgeous on blu-ray as on the big screen, the colors are crisp, the audio sharp, and the bonus features are not just filler material but truly interesting/entertaining.
