Katie makes a daring rescue of a woman who appears to have been pushed onto subway tracks as NBC’s Brilliant Minds season two episode three opens. The victim didn’t do anything to provoke an attack, and when the EMTs arrived on the scene, she was alone.

(The following is a recap so there are episode three spoilers ahead!)

Oliver (Zachary Quinto) is nearly giddy celebrating his mother’s retirement, walking arm-in-arm through the hospital hallways with Carol (Tamberla Perry). He thinks Carol would make a formidable chief of staff, and she laughs when he suggests maybe he should be in charge.

Katie (Mishel Prada) and her partner, Max, bring the subway victim to the ER, and Dana (Aury Krebs) hustles to meet them. Ericka (Ashleigh LaThrop) sneaks a pill after Dana rushes out. Dr. Anthony Thorne (John Clarence Stewart) barks orders as Dana, Jacob (Spence Moore II), and the ER team try to assess the victim. Anthony determines she needs to be oxygenated before any other treatment, and Jacob handles the job of inserting the airway as Oliver watches. Jacob nailed it!

Josh (Teddy Sears) rushes in and takes over, pushing Oliver aside without acknowledging his presence.

Once the emergency’s over, Dana’s stunned to learn from Van (Alex MacNicoll) that Katie performed the rescue before the electricity was cut to the tracks. Oliver confirms it and adds that the woman would have died if Katie hadn’t acted so quickly.

Van’s social worker ex-wife, Michelle (Stacey Farber), arrives seeking his help on a case. Oliver’s team, including Charlie (Brian Altemus), listens as Michelle explains her new client, Adam (Liam Galway), has severe autism and is non-verbal. The woman who was pushed, Gloria (Patrice Goodman), is his caregiver.  Witnesses told police that only Adam and Gloria were on the platform when Gloria was pushed.

Adam can’t tell the police what happened, and it’s possible he’ll be charged with the attack. Oliver introduces himself and promises to help. Carol joins the team as Michelle explains that Adam is 100% reliant on Gloria to communicate for him. He doesn’t trust anyone else.

Carol sets aside the rec room just for Adam so he isn’t overwhelmed. She suggests they take off their lab coats to look less imposing. Adam won’t allow either Carol or Oliver to examine him but does show an interest in a nearby puzzle.

Oliver meets with Carol, Michelle, Van, and Charlie to go over a plan of action. Charlie’s not sure why they’re devoting any time to Adam, and Oliver puts him in his place, quite effectively narrowing it down to the fact Adam needs their help.

Oliver knows Adam’s sharp because he’s putting the puzzle together upside-down, but the emotional strain is making him cut off. Oliver realizes they have just the tool for finding out what Adam’s really feeling: Van.

Carol stops Dana and Ericka to apologize for pulling them into the Alison case. They’re shocked to learn Alison wasn’t the one who reported Carol, and Ericka’s in full detective mode as they walk away. Dana thinks they should follow Carol’s suggestion and forget about it. But that’s obviously not what Ericka thinks.

Josh rushes through Oliver’s questions about Gloria, keeping everything strictly professional.

Carol introduces Van to Adam as a doctor who can sense what people are feeling. Oliver asks Adam basic questions and Van can’t figure out what he needs. Van thinks Adam is feeling everything—sad, hurt, and fearful—and then suddenly both Adam and Van react to a noise in their heads. Van figures out Adam needs headphones, and Adam allows him to put them on.  It immediately calms Adam down enough for Oliver to examine him.

Carol asks if he pushed Gloria in the subway and Adam begins repeating a word that sounds like “saya.” Van feels that Adam’s scared while he’s saying it.

Oliver suggests to the team that they need to figure out what he’s trying to say. Adam trusted them enough to actually speak, and they have to help him even though he has normal neuro function. Oliver asks Carol to stall the cops while Michelle and Van head to Adam’s group home to see if there’s anyone there with the name Adam’s repeating.

Carol just got her job back, so she doesn’t want to lie to the police. Oliver does it instead.

Van and Michelle reminisce about the early days of their relationship as they look at Adam’s room. Adam’s roommate, Tom (Connor Tomlinson), wants them to leave and Michelle notices he has posters from the Sherlock Holmes movies. She turns their visit into a mystery to solve by asking if he recognizes the word that Adam keeps repeating.

Tom reveals Adam is being forced to move in a month (he can’t stay after he turns 26) and he and Gloria got in a fight last month while looking for an apartment.

Back at the hospital, Oliver rushes into the rec room after a loud bang and finds Charlie on the floor and Adam agitated and rubbing his arms. Charlie’s hesitant to say what happened and finally admits he was asking Adam neuropsychological evaluation questions when Adam tossed him to the ground.

Jacob’s with Gloria when she regains consciousness, blood flowing from her mouth as she screams out, “Adam!” Josh, Oliver, and Anthony enter Gloria’s room after she’s been taken to the OR, trying to figure out what caused the bleeding. They all agree that Jacob is going to be an excellent doctor, and it’s a good thing he was there to catch the bleeding.

Oliver joins Carol in the hallway, and she’s concerned if Gloria dies, Adam will be charged with murder. Oliver knows they need more time to get Adam to tell his story. Oliver suggests that Carol hide Adam in her office until the police leave, but she’s not about to put her job at risk again so soon. Her one mistake cost her a shot at becoming chief, and she’s not going to add another strike to her record.

Ericka is still starring in her own true crime show, as Dana describes it, and she wonders if Katie’s EMT partner, Max, could have reported Carol. Dana doesn’t think so, but Ericka is totally obsessing. Dana actually seems to join Ericka’s quest for answers when Ericka confesses that she wants to know who among them reported a woman of color when no one ever reports Oliver for all the bizarre things he’s done while treating patients.

Oliver overheard this whole conversation and assures Ericka they’re on the same page. He wonders if it was Carol’s ex-husband who reported her.

Van and Michelle return to the hospital and fill Oliver in on the fight Adam and Gloria recently had. Charlie joins them, commenting that Adam just pushed him, which only adds to the case against him. When Charlie reenacts the shove, Michelle realizes Adam wasn’t trying to push him. Adam was grabbing for his pen in his coat pocket.

Adam makes two drawings, but no one can figure out what they mean. Two cops arrive and place him in handcuffs, explaining they have a warrant for his arrest. There is subway footage of him running from the crime scene.

After Adam’s taken away, Van compliments Michelle and tells her she’s amazing. He wishes there was more the team could’ve done to help Adam. Michelle understands they did their best. They hug and Van wonders if she felt the spark between them back at Adam’s. She reminds him they didn’t communicate while they were married.

Dana finds Katie taking a nap but mistakenly assumes the worst. Katie jerks awake, and Dana’s relieved but confesses she thought Katie’s actions during the rescue were reckless, unnecessary, and thoughtless. She thinks Katie doesn’t value her life and worries about all the ways she could lose her. Dana cries, explaining it makes her relive the loss of her sister.

Katie reveals she takes chances because she knows life is precious and feels she has to save everyone she can. They kiss after Katie says, “I jump because of you.”

Oliver, Ericka, and Charlie walk and talk about Gloria’s condition. They still have no idea why she is bleeding, and now she is going into renal failure. Her past medical history is unremarkable.

A doctor telling a patient in the hallway to say “ah” rings a bell and Oliver realizes that’s what Adam’s been saying. He’s been trying to tell them that Carol was sick and what he’s been drawing might be a symptom. They look at his drawings again and Oliver holds one up, telling Carol to say what she sees without thinking about it. She says, “Butterfly,” and the team realizes exactly what’s wrong with Gloria.

A short while later, Gloria’s awake and Oliver tells her everything that just happened. He also confirms that after they treated her for her injuries from the subway, she remained sick. They only figured out she has lupus because of Adam. The butterfly-shaped rash is a unique feature of lupus. Adam saved her life!

Gloria confirms that Adam knew she wasn’t feeling well when she had the butterfly rash. Oliver breaks the news that the police think Adam pushed her and have taken him away.  Thankfully, Gloria remembers everything.  Adam always hangs back a bit in the subway because he doesn’t like the noise. While he was busy sketching, she suddenly felt hot and dizzy, passed out, and fell onto the tracks.

Adam did not push her and actually tried to save her but didn’t reach her in time.

Adam’s released and returns to the hospital, but this time for a reunion with Gloria. She tells him he saved her life, and he gives her a huge hug. Gloria also explains to the team and Michelle that, although they had a little fight a week ago, they talked things out, and Adam is moving in with her. She’s going to take over as his full-time guardian. Adam has a huge smile as they both rub their chests over their hearts in a circular motion, indicating they want to go home.

Anthony informs Carol that Ericka’s still trying to figure out who reported her. Carol confesses that she wants to know and second-guesses her every choice. But that’s just the price she has to pay. Anthony closes her office door and reveals he knows who reported her. He plays pickup ball once a month and there’s a board member who really wants to play. Anthony found out through him what happened and offers to tell Carol. Carol takes a minute to think about it and decides she doesn’t want to know. Whoever did it did the right thing. Anthony applauds her decision and says it was a test and she passed. They laugh and she tosses her pen at him. Anthony thinks she already knows the answer as to who reported her. The answer is, “It doesn’t matter.”

Ericka also decided it doesn’t matter.  Whoever did it has to live with their guilt. Dana agrees when Ericka says lies will eat you alive, and there’s no punishment worse than keeping secrets. Dana suddenly blurts out, “I reported Carol.”

Ericka’s stunned and can’t believe Dana has been lying. Dana won’t explain but says she has her reasons and would do it again if she needed to.

Oliver and the hospital staff surprise Carol with a welcome back party. Oliver welcomes her home and says she’s vital to the hospital.

Oliver leaves the party early to meet with the new chief, who, it turns out, is Josh! Josh has been avoiding him because of the promotion but confirms now is the time to talk.
