Apple TV+’s official trailer for Chief of War finds Jason Momoa in full warrior mode. A passionate project for Momoa and series co-creator Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, the historical drama will release the first two episodes on August 1, 2025. New episodes follow on Fridays.
“Set amidst the scenic backdrop of the islands of Hawai‘i, the nine-episode series, based on true events, follows warrior Ka‘iana, portrayed by Momoa, as he tries to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century,” reads Apple TV+’s synopsis.
Told from an indigenous perspective, Chief of War features a predominantly Polynesian cast that includes Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, and Cliff Curtis. Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale‘o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka, and Benjamin Hoetjes also star.
Doug Jung is the showrunner and serves as an executive producer along with Momoa, Sibbett, Justin Chon, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook, Brian Andrew Mendoza, Anders Engström, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, Francis Lawrence, and Tim Van Patten. Chon directed the first two episodes and Momoa directed the season finale.
