Starz’s Heels season two episode seven set up the huge showdown between the Duffy Wrestling League and Florida Wrestling Dystopia that will take place in episode eight, the season finale. Episode seven found the FWD and the DWL vying for the attention of a Continuum bigwig, with the FWD getting the upper hand, at least for now. The season’s penultimate episode also saw the Duffy squad pulling together as a family.
And now, the recap:
Ace (Alexander Ludwig) is concentrating on getting his mind, body, and spirit in shape as episode seven begins. But as Ace improves himself, Willie (Mary McCormack) appears to be spiraling down, taking out her anger and frustration on her daughter and husband. She’s been staying late at the Dome every night, and her husband’s fed up with her behavior.
It’s a family affair at the Dome, with Staci (Alison Luff) helping out as they prepare to meet with the fire chief. However, before the meeting, Jack (Stephen Amell) has a contentious phone call with Gully (Mike O’Malley) as they prepare for the big showdown between the DWL and the FWD. Gully wants Jack’s script ASAP so that he can memorize it and/or turn in notes before the big show.
They argue over the importance of good scripts, and Gully reminds Jack that he’s not writing award-winning material. Wrestling fans don’t care how good the script is; they just want to enjoy brutal fights.
Gully and Jack exchange multiple F-yous before finally hanging up.
Brooks Rizzo (Josh Segarra) runs his thoughts about the DWL and FWD past his boss, Jen Lussier (Emmy Raver-Lampman), at Continuum, and it seems he’s very impressed by both organizations. That said, there’s much more animation in his voice when he discusses the Duffy crew. Jen isn’t nearly as enthusiastic about adding wrestling to their streaming roster but is still willing to meet with both groups to hear what they can bring to Continuum.
Jen tells Brooks to warn both leagues that they need to impress her and should be able to describe how they’ll help bring in subscribers.
Wild Bill (Chris Bauer) assembles the gang to go over their upcoming promos in support of the huge match. Bill’s in fine form, delivering a speech about how much he hates when people just nod their heads in response to someone saying hi.
Big Jim (Duke Davis Roberts) arrived late and got read the riot act by Willie, and he’s in no mood to listen to Bill’s sanctimonious speeches. Bill turns over the stage and lets Big Jim go off on how they should all act and the attitude they must adopt against FWD. Diego (Robby Ramos) joins him, and the group comes alive, revved up to take down Dystopia by performing as a well-oiled unit.
Brooks rings up Jack to let him know Jen will pay Duffy a visit. If they impress her, they could earn a spot on Continuum.
Meanwhile, Ace begins his first shift at Greener Gardens, a senior living center, believing this is what The Condamned is all about. But poor Jack is so stressed out about the Continuum meeting that he calls Ace and admits he really needs his help. Ace promises to be there for his big bro as soon as his shift’s over.
A short while later, Ace learns it’s not all sunshine and roses at senior living centers when one of the residents literally throws excrement in his face. Ace may want to rethink his path to redemption at this point. Also, was this scene necessary?
Willie and Crystal (Kelli Berglund) have a chat, and Crystal reveals she’s sticking with the DWL. Willie wonders if it was her idea or Bobby’s, suggesting Crystal should never dismiss her own wants and needs. Crystal insists it’s her decision to stick with the DWL, and she’s not shortchanging herself.
Rizzo contacts Gully to inform him Jen’s going to pay him a visit. Gully’s super excited about the opportunity and instructs his daughter to organize a party so Jen can get a taste of Dystopia’s enthusiasm.
Crystal accompanies Bobby (Trey Tucker) to the doctor’s office, and they’re disappointed to learn his leg isn’t healing as well as the doctor hoped. They may need to fix his leg with plates, screws, and bone grafts.
Ace finally makes it to the Dome, and Jack can’t hold back a laugh as his bro describes the sh*t-tossing incident. Ace is proud of himself for not hitting the old guy, but Jack would rather discuss the upcoming meeting with Jen from Continuum and the match with Gully’s guys. Jack knows they need to out Gully, Gully, but they can’t. Their facility is a dump compared to FWD, but Ace points out it’s all about the people – not the building.
Jack and Ace come up with the idea to ask each wrestler why they love the sport. That will help them figure out who they are – but then what do they do with that information? Ace and Jack realize what needs to be done.
They pass out scripts for a new promo that will feature each of the wrestlers as well as the team behind the scenes. Once everyone wraps their individual videos, Diego’s charged with putting it all together in one coherent promo that will, hopefully, make Jen understand people are the heart of the DWL.
They’ll also put together a big family-style meal for the Continuum folks. Staci acts as coordinator so that they don’t all bring desserts.
The following day the arena looks festive and smells much better than when it’s filled with a sweaty crowd watching sweaty wrestlers. Twinkling lights and a balloon arch will welcome Jen to the ring.
Over at Gully’s, he’s hosting a massive party complete with a guy on fire and lots of booze. Rooster (Allen Maldonado) uses all his charm to convince Jen just how special the FWD is and why it has such a huge fan base. Rooster and Gully seem to thrive on schmoozing, but Jen wonders where The Condamned and Crystal are. Rooster assures her they’ll be at the upcoming Harmageddon match.
The time for Jen’s arrival comes and goes, and the Duffy group gets nervous. Since there’s nothing else to do, Staci decides it’s the right time to confront Wild Bill about the league’s past. She figured out he must have loaned Tom a lot of money, but Bill doesn’t want to discuss the past. However, after going through decades of financial paperwork, Staci realized no one will buy Duffy, given the huge debt the league’s accumulated over the years.
They both know Jack has no idea about the league’s history, and Bill begs Staci not to tell him about the money he loaned Tom.
Jen decides to stay at Gully’s party and asks her assistant to call Duffy and tell them to just email their presentation. She also tells Gully to call The Condamned and Crystal so she can meet them right now.
Gully calls Willie and orders her to have Crystal come to his house right now. Willie tells him where to shove it, and he reminds her that Jack will never give her the opportunity to advance like he will. He also points out that Jen is still at his place, mojito in hand, and just waiting to meet Crystal. Willie doesn’t respond, and Gully takes that to mean Willie will make sure that Crystal is on her way.
Jack breaks the news that Jen isn’t coming and that they need to email the promo. Jack’s disappointed because he wanted her to meet the people she’d be investing in, but Bill believes he should just email the promo. If that doesn’t impress her, she’s not worth their time and effort.
Bill suggests that Jack screen the promo right now so they can celebrate who they are and what they’ve got. Diego presses play, and what follows is a series of emotionally moving stories told by the wrestlers and the staff, explaining why wrestling is so important in their lives.
The video earns a hearty round of applause, and the feeling of disappointment is – mostly – washed away.
Ace is still a little down, but Jack points out Continuum won’t know what hit them when they watch the DWL in action during Harmageddon.
A short while later, the clean-up is underway when Willie finally speaks with Crystal. She agrees with Crystal that this is a special place and doesn’t mention that Gully asked for her to come to his place to meet Jen.
The episode ends with Staci informing Jack that there’s stuff in the boxes that indicates Duffy’s in bad shape. Plus, there’s “weird stuff” as in deliberately shady stuff that could cause major problems if it’s discovered.
