Touted as an original drama and brought to us by the network responsible for Ice Spiders and Mega Snake, my hopes were not high. However, with the always entertaining Being Human as its lead-in, I decided to give it a shot. The story centers on Bo, a beautiful but troubled loner with a heart of gold. She wanders from city to city, job to job, never getting close to anyone. As we learn in the opening scene, it’s best not to get close. Bo kills the token businessman pervert with one kiss to protect a young girl.

The story, as set up in the first quarter of the hour, seemed to be going nowhere soon. It looked as though it would be Law and Order SyFy edition. However, the story zigs when you thought it would zag. Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried), the homicide detective on her trail, turns out to be working for the Fae. The Fae, a mystical race of creatures predating humans, believe Bo to be one of their own. Apparently, there are no “free range” Fae walking around; all Fae are born into clans. After being tested in a battle to the death, Bo will need to decide to join either the Light or the Dark Fae.

The storylines set up in this opening episode should prove entertaining over the season. There should be drama surrounding not only the internal Fae politics but the search to answer the most important question: who hid Bo from the Fae and why? Bo is played by Anna Silk, channeling her best, Elisha Dushka. She is reason enough to come back for more. There are some interesting relationships to be developed as well.

Dyson, aside from his freakish resemblance to Chris Martin of Coldplay, turns out to be a protector rather than a pursuer and a potential love interest for Bo as well. Kenzi (played by Ksenia Solo), the girl saved by Bo in the opening scene, is terrific as comic relief. Also, as Bo’s only human connection, I look forward to more of their Xena / Gabrielle-like banter. I will be tuning in again.
