‘Manifest’ Season 4 Episode 16 Recap: “Furball”

Jared and Michaela are reigniting their relationship and enjoying life away from the detention center as Netflix’s Manifest season four episode 16 opens. With Michaela’s dad resting peacefully upstairs, the couple get to know each other’s naked bodies once again.

The following morning, Jared (J.R. Ramirez) returns from grocery shopping with plenty of supplies to make grilled cheese – one of Michaela’s favorites – and wonders how long they need to remain hidden. The detention center must be tracking Michaela (Melissa Roxburgh), so they can’t even make any phone calls.

Back at the detention center, Ben (Josh Dallas) is convinced everyone’s going to die, and it’s all his fault. He accidentally stopped the 828ers from receiving callings once he injected Angelina with Saanvi’s serum. Vance (Daryl Edwards) insists Ben had no way of knowing the callings would disappear.

Olive (Luna Blaise), Cal (Ty Doran), and Eden return home after their grandfather failed to show up at the meeting place. They discover their home has been trashed and a search warrant was left behind. Olive takes Eden to see Ben, sure he’ll know what happened to his dad. Ben’s not sure where Michaela or his dad are but drops a hint about “5A” as a possible location.

Captain Bill Daly’s body is moved and prepared for experiments. As they’re wheeling his body through the halls, the building experiences another earthquake. Fissures open in the hallway and Daly’s body falls into one, along with two agents.

Boiling hot lava bubbles just feet beneath the facility as Olive and Eden run for their lives.

Director Zimmer declares that isolation protocol will be immediately initiated. The guards grab rifles and the security cameras are turned off. Vance is confused and Zimmer explains the guards and staff are all leaving the detention center. The 828ers will be left alone inside the building to fend for themselves.

The passengers scream to be let out, certain they’re going to starve to death. Even Vance can’t help after Zimmer gave orders to seal the building and not let anyone in or out. He apologizes for not being able to do anything more for Ben or the 828ers, and hands Ben the key card to the food storage.

Vance also informs Ben that the ALNI patients need special care and Saanvi’s not in the building. It’ll be up to Ben to delegate work and watch the patients on life support. Vance hopes Ben will be able to stretch the supplies nine months to the Death Date.

They exchange one final handshake, and Ben asks Vance to find his kids and tell them that he loves them.

An alarm blares and Vance is racing toward the exit when he runs into Olive. She can’t leave because Eden’s still somewhere inside the building!

Olive refuses to exit the building and won’t miss another day of being with her dad. She chooses to remain inside and asks him to apologize to Cal for her.

The locks disengage inside the detention center and the passengers are now able to walk anywhere inside the facility. Olive spots TJ (Garrett Wareing) and they rush into each other’s arms just as Ben realizes his daughter’s inside the center. They also hug and Olive explains that they need to look for Eden. She must be hiding somewhere after the earthquake.

Fairly quickly, Eden finds her family inside, and Olive’s happy they’re all together, even if it means they’re locked inside the center.

Vance fills Cal in on what’s happening at the center and that Olive and Eden are with Ben. Vance promises he won’t leave Cal alone; they’ll figure things out together. Neither knows where Michaela is, and then suddenly Cal has a calling. He sees four Queen cards and the numbers 6 2 3 8.

Vance is stunned and confused. He explains that when Angelina screamed, all the passengers stopped having callings. Yet Cal just experienced one.

“Cal, if you still have callings, you’re the only one,” says Vance.

Vance figures out Cal’s calling is about Every Queen Cooling, which services the detention center. Van 6238 is scheduled to service the detention center tomorrow.

Michaela believes this time with Jared is like what may have happened if the plane had never disappeared. She’s happy to be with him but confesses that she’s feeling lost. Without the callings, she’s not sure of her purpose. Jared assures her they’ll figure it out together.

A neighbor shows up at Jared’s door with food and details on who used to live there. He claims the man who owned it (Tarik) was killed by 828ers, and it’s been empty since his death.

Michaela’s frustrated about the misinformation regarding the 828ers and knows that without the callings, there’s no way to prove they’re doing good. She’s not sure how to help now but knows she doesn’t just want to be caged up inside for the next nine months.

Michaela decides a short run will help and Jared warns her not to talk to strangers.

Meanwhile, Angelina (Holly Taylor) and Eagan (Ali Lopez-Sohaili) aren’t welcome in the 828ers’ new safe house. They ask the two to leave and insist Angelina isn’t like them. Angelina killed Ben Stone’s wife and her fellow passengers don’t want to hear any of her “chosen one” excuses.

Eagan’s going to stick with Angelina, but he believes they can still convince the 828ers to let them stay. Angelina has the power of sapphire, but he has the gift of gab. Together, they can get the passengers to understand they’re just like them. Eagan memorized Ben’s passenger reports and knows exactly how to connect with each 828er in the safe house.

Angelina points out each of the 828ers’ faults and then assures them she can help them as her palm and forearm glow blue. She’s been chosen to lead them to salvation.

The group votes and they agree to let Angelina and Eagan stay.

Quinn, the head guard at the detention center, isn’t satisfied with just locking the passengers inside. Unauthorized and out of control, he enters the center and tells the passengers it’s time to pay. Ben insists they’re trying to stop death and destruction but Quinn refuses to listen.

Eden approaches Quinn and hands over her favorite doll, suggesting maybe he won’t be scared if he holds onto it. Ben assures Quinn they’re trying to stop the end of the world and that he just wants to see Eden grow up. To do that, they need to be free to solve callings and do good.

Quinn can’t let the passengers out but will let Eden go if she wants out. Eden doesn’t, so Quinn hands her back her doll and leaves without firing a shot.

Later, things are getting tense – again – at the detention center and Ben tries to calm the nerves of his fellow 828ers with a pep talk. It works and Ben uses the moment of unity to get the passengers to divide up based on specialized skills. He even asks for a group to help make the center into more of a home while they’re stuck there.

Elsewhere, Vance’s research reveals the 6238 van driver was once arrested for attacking an 828er and is a member of the radical Xers group. Vance believes they need to stop him from accessing the outside of the building and pumping in a substance. (He’s supposed to pump in Freon.)

Michaela’s on her way back when her neighbor pretends to need help. She checks on him and he attacks her, recognizing her as an 828er. He holds her to the ground and is strangling her when Cal and Vance arrive and knock him out.

The neighbor is the 6238 van driver and Cal’s calling led them to Michaela!

They check the van and find Sarin gas, confirming he was going to poison the detention center. Vance calls for help to get rid of the van, and then they both join Michaela at Tarik’s old place. Michaela’s unhappy to learn about Olive and Eden being locked up with Ben, but at least Cal still gets callings.

Cal believes his sapphire protected him from Angelina’s scream.

Michaela and Cal realize the passengers’ callings aren’t gone; they just can’t access them. It’s like the scream blew out their antennas. Cal might still be able to get them all, and Vance agrees that it’s worth a shot.

Cal’s scar glows and he’s overwhelmed with callings. He screams in pain and covers his ears, panting as he exits the callings. Cal confirms the callings are still out there, and he got every passengers’ calling all at once. He thinks that if he focuses, he can concentrate on one at a time. They might still be able to survive the Death Date.
