Kayce works with Monica’s wild mustang but doesn’t seem to be accomplishing much as CBS’s Marshals episode seven opens. Dolly Weaver shows up unexpectedly, giving Kayce (Luke Grimes) an excuse to wrap up the training. He’d sort of promised a tour of the area, and Kayce’s a man of his word.

(The following is a recap of episode seven, “Family Business,” and there are spoilers.)

Dolly (Ellyn Jameson) loves the area, and Kayce points out a spot where he stole Jamie’s clothes and made him ride home naked. (It’s kind of a shock to hear Kayce laugh at a memory of Jamie.) The small talk continues, and Kayce compliments her riding skills.

They make it back to East Camp and Dolly’s dad, Tom (Chris Mulkey), joins them with a hat for Kayce from his ranch. Kayce’s happy to see Tom’s back on his feet, and Tom reveals he shot an elk and wants to cook it for Kayce. Kayce accepts the offer, knowing it’s not worth trying to argue with a Weaver.

Tom’s a good cook and the conversation mostly centers on ranching. Tom’s a believer in new technology; Kayce prefers the old ways. Kayce thinks Tom would get along with Beth, because they are both laser-focused on the bottom line. Things get a bit chilly when Tom asks to buy East Camp. Kayce cuts the dinner short and after Tom leaves, Dolly claims she was blindsided by her dad. She apologizes and thanks him for the lovely day. She hugs him and attempts a kiss, but he pulls away.

Cal’s day starts off with a visit to his doctor, who wants to do some tests on his neck and shoulder pain that Cal’s experiencing. When he’s leaving, Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) spots Belle’s husband, Jared (Eddie Aguirre), with another woman.

Miles (Tatanka Means), Belle (Arielle Kebbel), and Andrea (Ash Santos) relax at the bar after work, drinking and playing pool. Sabrina pops in and Miles introduces her to his “teammates.” Andrea’s surprised when Sabrina describes Miles’ football career. She had no idea Miles was an All-State tight end and linebacker. He also had a full ride to a D1 program, but his career ended too quickly after he and the coach butted heads.

A new workday begins with a new case for the team. Someone placed a car bomb in Judge Pauline Ayers’ car, and it was only a lucky fluke that she and her husband survived. A valet was killed in the explosion. Clint Gallo, a bomber who Judge Ayers sentenced to prison and was just paroled, is a likely suspect. He missed a check-in with his parole officer last week and threatened the judge 10 years ago.

Andrea and Kayce will hunt the ex-con while Belle, Cal, and Miles protect the judge and her family.

Pauline, her husband, Blake, and their daughter Fallon aren’t thrilled about being in lockdown but handle it fairly well. Blake jokes about the number of threats his wife receives, and Pauline asks Belle if her husband, Jared (a dentist), gives her a hard time about her job. Cal doesn’t mention seeing Jared with another woman, as Belle confirms it’s a constant negotiation with her husband over their jobs.

Fallon’s not her mom’s biggest fan and they disagree about everything. Cal whispers to Belle, wondering if they should say something. (He’s basically wondering if he should tell Belle he saw Jared.) Belle believes family drama should stay within the family. She’s confused about Cal’s interest in the family dynamics.

Fallon looks out of one of the large windows and Cal screams at her to stop. Suddenly, shots ring out and the window shatters. Belle covers Pauline’s body and Cal protects Fallon until the shooting ends.

Andrea and Kayce find Clint (Joshua Dov) at his girlfriend’s house, and he makes a run for it. Andrea’s a badass and knocks him into a trash bin and Kayce’s impressed. They bring him in and Clint insists he was at his girlfriend’s place. He suggests there isn’t a shortage of people who want Judge Ayers dead, but he didn’t kill her.

Belle and Miles check out the area and determine the shots were fired from a parking garage across the way. The shooter was gone when they arrived, and they didn’t leave bullet casings behind. Miles has asked for the security footage. Belle wonders if Clint has guns, and Cal confirms Clint’s in custody and couldn’t have been the shooter. Which means he’s probably not the bomber.

The team turns over the crime scene to the local police and Miles volunteers to stay behind. Cal wants to move the family, and Pauline believes her husband and daughter can be taken somewhere safe, away from her and the line of fire.

Cal thinks Kayce’s ranch is the perfect hideout spot.

Cal and Andrea bring Fallon and Blake to Kayce’s and it’s obvious that Blake is aware of the Dutton family. He tells his daughter that they’re in good hands with Kayce Dutton. Kayce and Cal believe the person who’s trying to kill Pauline has a military background. And, strangely, the bomb used is most often seen in the African Sahel. Cal’s having someone look through the judge’s cases and flag anyone she convicted who was in the military.

Miles learns a red van was seen entering and leaving the parking garage. The local cops also discovered passports Blake owns with an alias. Why would a guy who runs a non-profit need fake passports?

Cal and Belle return to the station and Belle confirms that Blake didn’t use the fake passports to travel. He used them for secret financial transactions that moved to and from Equatorial Guinea, which is the same place the bomb type traced back to. Cal thinks he’s a suspect and may have put a hit on his wife.

Over at East Camp, Blake steps outside to get better cell service. Fallon confesses to Andrea and Kayce that she’s having a tough time dealing with someone trying to kill her mom. Andrea says they can relate; both her and Kayce’s dads were killed because of their jobs. They haven’t found Andrea’s dad’s killer and finding him is what motivates her. No one outside the family knows who killed John Dutton, so to the world, his death is unsolved. Kayce insists he doesn’t think about it much.

Kayce steps away when Cal calls with an update about Blake. Cal’s sure Blake’s shady and could have ordered the hit, and he asks Kayce to try and get Blake to talk. Kayce steps outside and discovers that Blake has vanished.

Pauline’s shocked to learn he’s gone and even more shocked when Cal says he left on his own. Pauline’s surprised that her husband has passports with different aliases. Security footage from Kayce’s shows Blake walking out to a car that pulled up in front of Kayce’s and then being forced into the car. Even Pauline admits it looks like Blake knew these people were coming.

She doesn’t know what’s happening and now realizes that Blake’s had a secret life for years.

Andrea suggests they don’t tell Fallon what happened. Cal wants them to leave Kayce’s place, since Blake’s kidnappers know its location.

Miles has Blake’s hard drive, and it indicates that Blake’s been in trouble since he made a trip to a clinic in Equatorial Guinea. He was forced to use his nonprofit to help the rebels smuggle weapons. Not only that, but the president of Equatorial Guinea’s daughter was recently killed by a car bomb made by the rebels with explosives Blake supplied. The president’s henchmen threatened to kill Blake unless he told them who planted the bomb.

Cal believes Blake overheard him and Kayce discussing the origin of the car bomb, called the president’s henchmen, and then voluntarily got into their car—all to keep Pauline and Fallon safe. Unfortunately, the marshals can’t get any info on the kidnappers because their identities have been scrubbed. It’s possible they did covert work with the US government. Since Pauline’s a federal judge, she can sign a warrant to declassify their identities.

Andrea and Kayce are taking Fallon someplace safe when Andrea receives news that the kidnappers are Rylan Hightower and Nate Porter, ex-Delta Force and current private contractors who’ve worked with the Equatorial Guinea president in the past. Hightower owns property a few miles away so instead of dropping off Fallon, they take her with them.

Andrea wants to wait outside Hightower’s for Cal and Belle, who are 10 minutes away. Andrea warns Kayce that the DOJ wants these guys alive. Kayce doesn’t think Blake will still be alive if they wait and has Andrea stay with Fallon while he sneaks up to the house. He spots Hightower and Porter torturing Blake and yells before firing. One man runs for cover and the other fires back, but Kayce’s a better shot and hits him in the chest.

Kayce and the other guy exchange gunfire. When it stops, Kayce moves closer to his target’s position and sees his gun on the ground. The guy leaps out of the shadows and attacks, and for a minute it looks bad for Kayce. Finally, Kayce gets the upper hand and shoots his attacker.

Blake and Fallon are brought to the station and Pauline hugs her husband. Fallon’s holding all this against her dad, thinking he’s a monster. Andrea suggests she ask her dad what happened, while Kayce reminds her no father is perfect. Kayce believes Blake was trying to protect her and her mom.

The day’s over and Belle tries to convince Cal to go to the bar to meet Miles, Kayce, and Andrea. Cal doesn’t want to, and Belle grabs bourbon and pours drinks.

Miles and Andrea talk about dating and Miles confesses that asking out anyone outside the rez is difficult. He’s got a girl in mind but won’t say who it is. Miles asks for Kayce’s advice and Kayce admits the last person he asked out was Monica, so he doesn’t have much recent experience.

It turns out the woman’s there, and Miles takes a drink, gets up his courage, and heads to the bar. Oh no…he wants to ask out Cal’s daughter, Maddie! Maddie not only says yes, she admits she’s wanted him to ask her. When she mentions she’s Cal’s daughter, Miles is speechless.

Cal reminisces about Maddie’s childhood and taking her to the San Diego Zoo. She was just three years old and loved it. Belle brings up Fallon, and Cal wonders if Pauline and Blake’s marriage will survive this. He asks if Belle’s marriage would last if she found out Jared was living a secret life. Belle’s had enough of Cal’s weirdness and tells him to just say what he wants to say. Cal comes clean with what he saw.

Belle admits she and Jared grew apart because her work has kept her away. She knows Jared cheats, but he’s supposed to be discreet. Belle doesn’t want to split up her family. Her priority is taking care of her son.

I expect them to kiss…and they do. They pull apart and Belle says, “This is a terrible idea.” Now it’s awkward and Cal blames it on the booze. Belle calls it a night.

Back at the bar, Kayce thinks it’s funny that Miles doesn’t drink yet he fell for a bartender. Andrea asks if he really hasn’t dated since Monica, and Kayce admits even hanging out with Dolly felt like cheating on Monica. Andrea says her mom dated after her dad was murdered, and she finally realized her mom wasn’t replacing her dad. “She was just making room for someone new,” says Andrea.

Andrea wonders what Monica would want, and Kayce says he’d love the chance to ask her. They sit in silence as The Road winner Adam Sanders performs.

The following day, Kayce rides Monica’s mustang for a minute before being thrown off. Dolly rides up in time to see him fall and apologizes for the other day. She asks for another tour of the area and Kayce agrees.
