Julia (Hermione Corfield) and Davina (Sara Vickers) bury Seema and discuss the ill-wish curse she left in the baby’s crib as Starz’s Outlander: Blood of my Blood season two, episode six begins. Davina took William to the fairy well to get rid of the curse, and Julia’s thankful she was gone or else Seema would have murdered her. Julia’s feeling incredibly guilty about killing Seema, but Davina reminds her that if she hadn’t, she’d be dead.
(The following is a recap of Outlander: Blood of my Blood season two, episode six – “Small Mercies” – and there are spoilers.)
Grace (Ruby Fubara) returns to Castle Leoch and delivers the news that a man (we know it was Balloch) killed Robert MacKinney and kidnapped Ellen. He never spoke and Grace describes him as a brute lacking kindness. She knows he wasn’t a MacKenzie, but she’s not sure what clan he was part of.
Colum (Seamus McLean Ross) asks Ned (Conor MacNeill), again, what he should do about Ellen. They’re relieved that Grace confirmed Ellen was able to warn Dougal, but then Colum seems to confess he doesn’t really care about his sister’s life – only that her death would put the land back in his hands and make it accessible to the Crown. Ned’s furious that Colum is so callous about his sister.
Back at Castle Leathers, Julia and Davina are shocked that Lord Lovat (Tony Curran) is home when they return from burying Seema. They claim Seema fled, and Lord Lovat seems suspicious but lets it go for now. He wonders why they’re not happy to see him and haven’t asked about the war. Lord Lovat informs them he took Inverness without bloodshed in the king’s name, and Davina’s worried about why Brian hasn’t returned. Lord Lovat is angry that Brian broke with him and continued fighting with the Jacobites, and it’s possible he’s dead. He spits out “honor” and “faith” as if they’re evil qualities Brian possessed.
Lord Lovat orders Julia to find a woman to replace Seema in his bed. He also informs them that a guest is on the way.
Henry (Jeremy Irvine) is cooking a meal at the Grant camp when Arch (Terence Rae) asks if he’s done trying to run away from the Grants. Henry admits he’s not going to stop trying to get back to Julia. He asks Arch to look away so he can flee, but Arch can’t. And even if he did, someone else would come after him. Arch reminds him he could have run away on the battlefield, and everyone would have thought he died. He surprises Henry by suggesting he can take a message to his “fairy wife,” and Henry perks up.
Balloch (Chick Allan) returns to Castle Leathers and Lord Lovat’s actually giddy to learn Ellen has arrived. He wants to speak with her without Julia.
Ellen (Harriet Slater) immediately asks about Brian and Lord Lovat suggests they have faith that he’ll return. She’s furious that Balloch brought her to Castle Leathers against her will. Lord Lovat claims he had Balloch watch her to keep her safe and that ultimately he saved her life. Ellen doesn’t seem thankful enough for Lord Lovat’s liking; she even calls him a traitor. He points out her father didn’t have clean hands either, but again, Ellen doesn’t back down. Lord Lovat apologizes for trying to ruin her reputation and suggests they have a meal before he sends her home.
Julia and Davina are surprised to see Maisri (Katharine O’Donnelly), and she explains she was summoned to do a reading and make a special spiced wine to celebrate Lord Lovat’s victory.
Lord Lovat introduces Julia to Ellen at dinner, and they share a look before acknowledging they met at Braemar. Ellen even points out that Julia told her how much she admired her husband, and Lord Lovat mistakenly believes she was referring to him. Ellen and Julia just smile.
Lord Lovat claims everything he does, he does for Brian’s sake. He’s trying to act charming but doesn’t pull it off. Davina and the cook arrive with the meal, and Davina can’t stop staring once they introduce her to Ellen MacKenzie.
Wine is poured as Lord Lovat recites Romeo and Juliet, comparing the Frasers and MacKenzies to the central families in Shakespeare’s tale.
Over at Castle Leoch, the men return from battle and Colum searches for answers on Dougal as women mourn their husbands who were killed. Jocasta (Sadhbh Malin) spots her husband, John, and tries to act as if she’s pleased he’s returned home. Colum and Maura (Bobby Rainsbury) ask about Dougal and learn he took 20 men and pursued the redcoats after the battle was over. Only one man, Alec MacMahon, returned while Dougal and Angus were captured alive. However, they may be dead by now. Colum wonders why no one went after them and John confirms two Fraser men did, heading to Fort William.
The action switches to Fort William and Dougal (Sam Retford) being beaten for information while chained to a pole. Captain Lord Gerard Grey (Digby Edgley) is in charge, and he allows Jack Randall (Finley Glasgow) to try to torture information out of Dougal. (He looks too old to be Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall, but that’s who he’s supposed to be.) Randall’s slaps and punches only result in Dougal laughing, so he retrieves a hot coal and threatens Dougal with it. Dougal admits Mar didn’t send him and that he continued pursuing them on his own. Grey orders Randall to stand down.
Dinner is nearly over at Castle Leathers and Ellen is obviously not feeling well. Lord Lovat suggests more wine before they hear from the seer. Ellen asks if Julia believes in Maisri’s talents, and Julia doesn’t deny she has skills. Lord Lovat asks about Brian’s fate while Ellen becomes increasingly ill. Maisri says, “She has something of Brian’s,” and then grabs Ellen’s hand and adds, “Life’s promise holds fast but death’s call must be answered.”
Maisri says Brian is alive, and both Davina and Ellen thank her. Suddenly, Ellen asks to head home because she’s not feeling well at all. Lord Lovat suggests she spends the night and leaves when she’s better.
Ellen’s still at the table when Julia also becomes sick, and Davina believes Maisri has cursed them both. Julia realizes something’s wrong just as Ellen begins bleeding and reveals she’s pregnant.
Julia demands that Lord Lovat tell her what he did and realizes he barely touched the wine. Maisri poisoned it, and Lord Lovat claims he protected his family. No other child can be born in his line or the prophecy will be ruined. He admits the poison was meant to destroy a womb and make both her and Ellen unable to have children.
Julia tells Ellen what Lord Lovat did and is forced to admit it was done to make her barren. Ellen is certain she lost the baby and that Lord Lovat succeeded. She refuses to spend the night and asks them to take her back to Leoch.
Dougal and Angus (Ross Mann) seem to be resigned to their fate as the dungeon cell they’re locked in begins to flood. They can still laugh, but the water rising forces them to stand up. Meanwhile outside, a redcoat calls out to a small boat, telling whoever’s in it to make themselves known. That costs him his life. Brian (Jamie Roy) and Murtagh (Rory Alexander) make their way into the fort and after killing another soldier, they finally remember to ask where the Jacobite prisoners are being kept before making their next kill.
Brian and Murtagh kill the man watching Dougal and Angus but are unable to get the locked grate open before Angus drowns. They pull his lifeless body out but can’t take it with them because the redcoats are coming. Brian says they’ll tell everyone he died an honorable death.
They encounter Randall on the way out and Dougal’s about to kill him when Brian stops him. He’s noticed Randall’s only a boy and has peed his pants. Instead, they lock him in a crate.
Davina brings Ellen home to Castle Leoch and explains what happened, and Mrs. Fitz (Sally Fitzgibbons) realizes she’s talking to Brian’s mother. They help Ellen to her bedchamber and get her cleaned up. She finally falls asleep with Jocasta at her bedside. Colum wants to speak to her, but Mrs. Fitz does an impressive job of playing gatekeeper. She admits she’s never seen Ellen’s spirit so broken and confirms it happened at Leathers. Mrs. Fitz asks Colum to give Ellen time before trying to speak with her.
Arch goes with Henry to Castle Leathers, leaving Henry in the nearby field and retrieving Julia on his own. Henry and Julia hug and kiss, and Julia can’t believe Arch Bug is now on their side. Julia can’t stay long since Lord Lovat’s inside, and Henry tells her Arch will deliver letters between them so they can keep in touch until they can be together. Henry will concentrate on finding gemstones. They find a rock that’s loose in the wall and agree they’ll use it for hiding the letters.
Episode six ends with the camera slowing zooming in on the rock.
