Paramount+’s School Spirits season two episode eight (the season finale) begins with Maddie (Peyton List) concerned about continuing to put her living friends in harm’s way. Janet insists they need to get Mr. Martin back to the school, positive he’ll return for her. Simon (Kristian Ventura) realizes that means they need to be prepared.

Meanwhile, Nicole (Kiara Pichardo) scrolls through her phone and sees the dozens of missed text messages from her parents. Diego goes in first to calm them down, as Xavier (Spencer Macpherson) hitches a ride home with his dad. When he leaves, Nicole tells Claire (Rainbow Wedell) they need to get ahold of Eugene, the guy from the nursing home, right now. They call and no one picks up. Eugene left Nicole a message saying he never believed the official story about the fire. He tried to investigate over the years and has evidence that could reveal the truth. He keeps a bunch of info on Janet’s death in a storage facility behind the nursing home.

Back at school, Simon runs as Mr. Martin, in Mr. Anderson’s body, rushes into the school, yelling for Janet. Mr. Martin claims he just wants to talk and follows Simon into the theater. He comes face to face with Janet, pleading that this is their last chance. They can still leave the school for good; he never meant to hurt her.

The other ghosts appear, demanding to know if he meant to hurt them while he was forcing them to relive their deaths. Mr. Martin gets frustrated and claims he did everything just for their benefit.

Mr. Martin grabs at Janet and realizes it’s Maddie. The ghosts insist he can’t take Janet, and he seems pretty sure of himself when he says they can’t stop him. Simon appears behind him and reminds Mr. Martin that while the ghosts can’t touch him, he can. They get into a fistfight and Mr. Martin punches Simon. Mr. Anderson (the ghost) walks up and distracts Mr. Martin while Janet knocks him out with a taser.

While all this is going down, Xavier’s attempting to convince his sheriff dad that he saw dead people. Also, ghosts are walking around in other people’s bodies. Xavier begs his skeptical dad to trust him and be his dad, not a cop. An urgent message from Nicole interrupts their conversation.

Simon ties up Mr. Martin, and Mr. Anderson speaks to the dead chemistry teacher who stole his body. All Mr. Anderson ever aspired to be was a teacher, and he thinks Mr. Martin feels the same. However, unlike Mr. Martin, he would never hurt a kid. This is Mr. Martin’s legacy now. Mr. Martin becomes incredibly emotional and repeatedly says this is not his fault. As he’s losing it, Simon pushes his chair off the stage and into Mr. Anderson.

The plan works and Mr. Anderson’s back among the living while Mr. Martin returns to ghost form!

Nicole and Claire break into the nursing home’s storage facility and find Eugene’s boxes. As they’re searching, Claire asks if something is going on between her and Xavier. Nicole confesses that Xavier is the guy she was falling for on the Weird Wisconsin forum. Nicole assumes Claire will laugh at her, but Claire insists they’re real friends (almost family) now.

Xavier scares them both to death as he enters the storage room.

Simon apologizes to Mr. Anderson for turning him in, and Mr. Anderson insists it’s not his fault. Mr. Anderson’s glad all this ghost stuff is over now, and Simon breaks the bad news that his problems aren’t over just yet. The cops think he stole Diego’s car.

Sheriff Baxter speaks to Maddie’s mom, Sandra, after picking her up while she was drunk and asleep at the wheel at a stop sign. He asks, off the record, why she keeps drinking. She confesses she has no idea. Sandra thinks it’s because of the responsibility of taking care of Maddie. Sheriff Baxter admits he wishes he could be better at taking care of Xavier.

Sandra reveals the Maddie who returned isn’t “her” Maddie. She’s a stranger, and that piques Sheriff Baxter’s interest. Mr. Anderson rushes in and says he has information on Maddie. They need to come with him right now.

The ghosts and Janet demand answers from Mr. Martin, and he apologizes for everything he’s done. He continues to claim his intentions were always pure. Mr. Martin’s ready to cross over now but warns there’s much more about this school and all the deaths that happen there than they are aware of. Before he explains, he needs Janet to swap places with Maddie.

Janet agrees, saying she’ll get answers and leave this place the right way.

Over at the storage unit, the threesome return to work looking for the evidence Eugene mentioned. Xavier finds a videotape labeled “historical society archives.” It’s fire coverage 1958, and Claire remembers seeing an old TV/VCR on a shelf. The video shows Eugene being interviewed by a local reporter and claiming nothing the cops are saying is true. He reveals that Janet’s father got Mr. Martin fired and believes Mr. Martin started the fire to get revenge.

Before Maddie and Janet swap bodies, Maddie talks to the ghosts. Rhonda (Sarah Yarkin) and Charley (Nick Pugliese) assure her this is the right thing, but Maddie’s worried she’ll never get to talk to them again. They cry and hug, with Charley telling her they all have to eventually leave high school.

Maddie tries to pull herself together and stares at Wally (Milo Manheim). He steps up and hugs her. They don’t need to speak; their emotions are palpable.

Janet says Maddie saved her when she needed to be rescued. Maddie helped her find her voice but now she’s done running and apologizes for what she put Maddie through. Maddie accepts and forgives her. Janet steps out of Maddie’s body and Maddie falls unconscious into Simon’s arms.

Maddie is still in ghost form and hands Janet Mr. Martin’s watch while taking a last look at her ghost friends. Maddie’s about to enter her body when Xavier, Claire, and Nicole rush in and announce Mr. Martin deliberately set the fire to kill Janet.

Maddie hasn’t made the switch yet, and Mr. Martin grabs Janet and pulls her into his scar. The ghosts can’t open the fallout shelter door, and Maddie tells Simon they need his help. Simon opens the door, but they aren’t in Mr. Martin’s scar. Charley tells the ghosts to go through their own scars to get to Mr. Martin’s.

The ghosts rush off and Simon warns Maddie she needs to get back in her body now. She’s running out of time!

Mr. Martin begs Janet to say she forgives him. That’s the only way they can get out of there. Janet had no idea Mr. Martin started the fire; she always blamed herself.

The lights flicker and Claire and her friends panic as Maddie’s pulse gets weaker. Maddie is worried about the ghosts being in danger, and Simon reminds her they’re dead. They’ll be okay.

Maddie suddenly figures out this is a trap! Mr. Martin pulled Janet into his scar, and the ghosts scattered to go into their scars. They’ll be stuck in their scars forever if they’re all in their scars simultaneously.

The ghosts meet up in the scars and work their way toward Mr. Martin’s.

Maddie’s body temperature plummets and when ghost Maddie goes to touch her locket, it shines bright red. It’s her key! Maddie tells Simon to keep her alive while she uses her scar to make sure the ghosts are safe.

She enters her scar and sees her dead dad and her mom pouring a never-ending drink. Her mom won’t help her, pipes burst, and the room fills with water while her feet are stuck to the floor.

The ghosts are also having a rough time working their way through the scars. They realize they must rush past a football team when they reach Wally’s scar. Wally fumbles the football and thinks he sees Maddie, but the ghosts finally manage to make their way out of his scar as a team.

Nicole wants to take Maddie’s body to the hospital, but Simon insists she can’t leave. Maddie will be stuck there, if her body leaves the school.

Janet looks around Mr. Martin’s scar and realizes it’s connected to hers. She spots trophies with her name and a lab coat that says Jacob Hamilton, PhD. She realizes Mr. Martin’s been withholding the truth.

Maddie’s near death and Xavier goes against Simon’s instructions and calls 9-1-1. They move her body outside, and Simon reminds them she can’t go past the boundary line. Simon screams for Maddie to come back and goes in search of her.

Season 2 Finale

Wally and the ghosts rescue Maddie and enter Janet and Mr. Martin’s scars. Maddie confronts Mr. Martin, telling him she knows he killed Janet and yet he never admitted it. Maddie demands to know why he made Janet think she was responsible. Mr. Martin continues to insist it was an accident. That part of his story is true.

Mr. Martin sees Janet in a lab coat and Maddie realizes he thinks Janet’s haunting him. He keeps returning to his scar but won’t find peace until Janet crosses over. Mr. Martin confesses his wife left him after he was fired. He couldn’t see a future. Mr. Martin disconnected the hoses and counted down on his watch 20 seconds, but then decided not to go through with it. He reconnected the hose and went to open a window, just as Janet walked in and lit a flame. (She wasn’t supposed to be there.)

Maddie reminds him that he kept locking Janet in this room with her most painful memories. Mr. Martin says the rooms can’t kill them. Janet enters her scar and sees her father lighting her college acceptance letter on fire. She now believes she didn’t deserve her father, being born at the wrong time, or not being able to make anything of her life. “But mostly, I did not deserve you,” she says to Mr. Martin.

Suddenly, the door in her scar opens and a brilliant bright light floods the room. Mr. Martin makes a break for it, but Janet pushes him to the ground. Maddie tells her to step through but Janet’s not ready yet.

She grabs Mr. Martin’s watch and the ghosts leave the room, trapping him in the fallout shelter.

They exit the fallout shelter, and Maddie realizes her body’s gone. She and the ghosts race outside as an ambulance is loading her body. She looks at the ghosts one last time, and Wally steps forward. It’s obvious he’s heartbroken, but still he tells her it’s time to go.

Maddie sees her mom and friends around the ambulance and runs toward her body. Xavier, Claire, and Nicole turn and see red lights pulsating throughout the school. The ghosts also see them. Maddie makes a last-minute leap toward her body.

The following day the ghosts stare out the window at the school buses as the bell rings. Janet decides she’s going to question Mr. Martin to find out what he meant when he said he’s been shielding them from something dangerous about the school.

Charley asks if anyone’s seen Wally. The scene switches to Wally in his scar. An exit lights up and the white light covers him. He walks toward it.

Maddie wakes in the hospital and her mom holds her tight. Xavier, Nicole, and Claire are also there but not Simon. They explain he doesn’t have his phone, and they haven’t talked to him since he went back searching for her while the EMTs were loading her into the ambulance.

Claire and Nicole take off to find Simon, but Xavier stays behind and apologizes for everything. They hold hands as Maddie’s dead dad walks in and, relieved, says, “She’s awake.” Xavier says hi but Maddie can’t see who he’s talking to! Xavier explains that he met her dad’s ghost.

Janet enters Mr. Martin’s scar and they both admit they have questions. Mr. Martin’s first question is why Simon is in his scar!

Season two ends with Simon asking Janet, “Where’s Maddie?” And that’s it, School Spirits fans. As of the night of the finale, Paramount+ hasn’t announced a renewal. So many questions are left unanswered, and we deserve at least one more season.
