‘The Diplomat’ Starring Keri Russell is Renewed for Season 2

Without giving away any spoilers, it’s safe to say that The Diplomat‘s first season has left ample room for a second season. Thankfully, Netflix has officially greenlit season two of the political drama.

“I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show. Dare I say it’s fun? Thank you, Netflix, for giving us another shot,” said series star and executive producer Keri Russell.

Season one’s cast also includes Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh. Celia Imrie, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, T’Nia Miller, and Miguel Sandoval guest star.

Debora Cahn created the series and serves as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Janice Williams and Simon Cellan Jones (for episodes one and two).

“We had such a great time making The Diplomat. And it’s a thrill to see how much people are enjoying it. We’re so glad we get to do it again!” stated Cahn.

Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, Cahn touched on the finale without giving too much away. “I wanted it to make people want more,” said Cahn. “I wanted to bring together all of the different dynamics of the political relationships and the personal relationships in one event that splits apart all at the same time.”

The Diplomat‘s eight-episode first season premiered on April 20, 2023 and claimed the top spot on the streaming service’s weekly global Top 10 list, with more than 57 million hours of the series streamed. Netflix hasn’t confirmed any details on season two or announced a targeted premiere date.

The Plot, Courtesy of Netflix:

Kate Wyler (Russell) is the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Sewell).

From showrunner Debora Cahn (The West Wing, Homeland), The Diplomat is a high-stakes, contemporary political drama about the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships between countries and people.
