‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Episode 2: Inside the Devastating Gamechanger

As someone who has never played the video game and has attempted to avoid all spoilers, I can genuinely say I was not at all prepared for The Last of Us season two, episode two. But seriously, how could anyone, without having listened to potential spoilers, be prepared for the devastating turn of events?

Fellow The Last of Us neophytes felt the same way, sharing their heartbreak on social media. One commenter even said they weren’t sure they’d watch another episode. While, thankfully, that sentiment wasn’t widely shared, it just goes to show the love we all felt for Joel, played to perfection by Pedro Pascal.

In the aftermath of the episode, HBO released a nearly 10-minute behind-the-scenes video featuring interviews with series creator Craig Mazan, director Mark Mylod, director of photography Catherine Goldschmidt, VFX supervisor Alex Wang, and actors Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, and Kaitlyn Dever.

The seven-episode second season premiered on April 13, 2025. New episodes air on Sundays at 9pm ET, with the season finale set for May 25th.

“Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind,” reads HBO’s synopsis. The cast includes Pedro Pascal as Joel (RIP), Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Rutina Wesley as Maria. Kaitlyn Dever stars as Abby, Isabela Merced is Dina, Young Mazino is Jesse, Ariela Barer is Mel, Tati Gabrielle is Nora, Spencer Lord is Owen, Danny Ramirez is Manny, and Jeffrey Wright is Isaac.

Season two is written and executive produced by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. Additional executive producers include Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Evan Wells. Halley Gross is a writer and co-executive producer.
