‘True Detective’ Season 4 Starts Filming in Iceland

True Detective Night Country
HBO begins production on ‘True Detective: Night Country’

Season four of HBO’s critically acclaimed, award-winning drama True Detective has begun shooting in Iceland. The upcoming season is officially titled True Detective: Night Country and stars Oscar winner Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in leading roles.

Season one premiered in January 2014 and starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch took over the lead roles in season two, which debuted in 2015. It took four years before season three arrived starring Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, and Stephen Dorff in January 2019.

Given that filming is just now underway, season four’s likely 2023 premiere puts it four years out from the third season.

In addition to Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, True Detective: Night Country stars John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, and Anna Lambe. Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc, and Joel D. Montgrand also star.

Issa López directed the entire fourth season and serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, and series creator Nic Pizzolatto also executive produce. Additional executive producers include Barry Jenkins, Adele Romansky, Mark Ceryak, Mari Jo Winkler, Chris Mundy, writer Alan Page Arriaga, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Cary Joji Fukunaga, and Princess Daazhraii Johnson.

HBO offered this description of the new season:

“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) must confront their pasts and the dark truths lying underneath the Arctic ice.”
