With Halloween just a few weeks away, it’s time for fans of the dark, apocalyptic, horror/soap opera series The Walking Dead to get ready to rejoin Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his band of survivors for the premiere of season 3.

When we last left our struggling survivors they had finally been driven off Hershel’s farm by an army of hungry zombies, and all except one – Andrea (Laurie Holden) – had made it back to the highway and regrouped. Poor Andrea had gotten cut off from her friends and ran for her life through the woods pursued by many ravenous zombies. Exhausted and out of ammo, Andrea was doomed to become a delicious late afternoon meal for the overpowering flesh-eater closing in on her when a mysterious cloaked figure with a sword saved her by cutting the zombie in two.

Season 3 begins several months later with the group having made it through winter but still without any kind of safe haven, like Hershel’s farm in season 2. Desperate, tired, and in need of a shelter, especially with Lori still pregnant and coming closer to a delivery date, Rick and the others are only too happy to seek refuge in the prison the viewers saw in the final shot at the end of season 2.

But our heroes shouldn’t be too quick to take up occupancy in the semi-abandoned prison because they don’t know what lurks around every dark, damp corner. Walkers, convicts, and possibly other trigger-happy survivors are all possible and likely hazards awaiting the group.

Meanwhile, fans of the graphic novels will be happy to know that Andrea was saved by, and has now teamed up with, the sword-carrying, cloaked figure whose name is Michonne (Danai Gurira), a favorite character in the novels. Both Andrea and Michonne have found a new home in Woodbury, a town run by a strong, ruthless man called The Governor (David Morrissey) who is sure to be the big bad guy in Season 3.

Walkers, a prison, a Governor, a lone swords-woman, and an expectant mother should add up to a very complicated, engrossing, and suspenseful new season for one of the highest rated dramas on television.

AMC’s The Walking Dead season 3 premieres on Sunday, October 14, 2012 at 9pm.
