Each year the American Film Institute recognizes the best in feature films and television series with its AFI Awards, and this year they journeyed to a galaxy far, far away for one of the entries. While most critics groups voted on their annual awards before the press screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, apparently the American Film Institute held off long enough to take in The Force Awakens before issuing their list.

AFI also awarded Mad Men the AFI Special Award “acknowledging its landmark contributions to America’s cultural legacy across nine years. In the history of AFI AWARDS, no other television program has earned as many honors.”

Per the American Film Institute, the AFI Awards recognize creative teams rather than individual achievements. “Honorees are selected based on works that advance the art of the moving image, enhance the rich cultural heritage of America’s art form, inspire audiences and artists alike and make a mark on American society.”
