Oscar winner Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) starred in the original 28 Days Later, executive produces the much-anticipated sequel, and is quite possibly a zombie in 28 Years Later. The buzz on social media is that Murphy appears in the trailer, rising from a cornfield at the 1:48 minute point.
While Murphy’s role remains unconfirmed, the trailer does show what the world’s like 10,228 days after the apocalypse.
“Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award-nominated writer Alex Garland reunite for 28 Years Later, a terrifying new story set in the world created by 28 Days Later. It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected,” reads Sony Pictures’ synopsis. “One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
The sequel stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes. Producers include Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernard Bellew.
28 Days Later was released in June 2003 and grossed $82 million off an $8 million budget during its theatrical run. 28 Years Later will open in theaters on June 20, 2025.
