‘Disobedience’ Trailer: Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams, and Forbidden Love

Bleecker Street has released the official trailer and new poster for Disobedience, based on the critically acclaimed book by Naomi Alderman. Rachel Weisz (The Light Between Oceans, My Cousin Rachel) and Rachel McAdams (True Detective, The Time Traveler’s Wife) star in the film which explores forbidden love between two childhood friends.

Disobedience had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival where it screened to overwhelmingly positive reviews. The R-rated romantic drama currently sits at 93% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with David Ehrlich of IndieWire saying, “Both Weisz and McAdams do a phenomenal job of negotiating who their characters are versus who their characters feel as though they have to be.” AwardsCircuit’s Shane Slater praised the film as a “potent, feminist exploration of human desire and the true meaning of freedom.”

The film marks director Sebastián Lelio’s English-language debut. He also adapted Alderman’s book for the screen with Rebecca Lenkiewicz. Lelio’s credits include Gloria, Una Mujer Fantastica, El ano del tigre, and Navidad.

Bleecker Street is targeting an April 27, 2018 theatrical release date for Disobedience.

The Plot: From a screenplay by Sebastián Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the film follows a woman as she returns to the community that shunned her decades earlier for an attraction to a childhood friend. Once back, their passions reignite as they explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality.
