‘Mulan’ Begins Filming and Unveils the First Official Photo

Disney’s live-action adaptation of Mulan has just begun production and in support of the start of filming, the studio’s released the first official photo. The just-released photo shows Liu Yifei in character as Mulan.

In addition to Liu Yifei (The Forbidden Kingdom, Once Upon a Time), the cast of the new Mulan includes Donnie Yen (Star Wars: Rogue One), Jason Scott Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny), Yoson An (The Meg), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect), Ron Yuan (Marco Polo), Tzi Ma (Arrival), Rosalind Chao (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Cheng Pei-Pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Nelson Lee, Chum Ehelepola, Gong Li (Memoirs of a Geisha), and Jet Li (Shaolin Temple).

Niki Caro (Whale Rider, McFarland USA) directs from a script by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Jurassic World, In the Heart of the Sea) and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek. Jason T. Reed, Chris Bender, and Jake Weiner are producing. Barrie M. Osborne, Bill Kong and Tim Coddington are on board as executive producers.

Disney confirmed filming will take place in China and New Zealand. The studio’s targeting a March 27, 2020 theatrical release date.

The live-action film is based on Disney’s 1998 animated feature film which featured the voices of Ming-Na Wen as Mulan, Miguel Ferrer as Shan-Yu, Harvey Fierstein as Yao, Eddie Murphy as Mushu, Freda Foh Shen as Fa Li, James Hong as Chi Fu, and June Foray as Grandmother Fa. The G-rated family-friendly film was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook. Mulan earned an Oscar nomination in the Best Music category as well as multiple Annie Awards.

The Plot: Mulan is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.
