Sandra Oh and Awkwafina Team Up for a Sister Comedy

Filming is now underway on a sister comedy starring 12-time Emmy Award nominee Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Grey’s Anatomy) and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians). Directed by Oscar-winner Jessica Yu (Best Documentary, Short Subjects – Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O’Brien), the untitled 20th Century Studios comedy film is expected to air on Hulu in 2023.

The cast also includes Jason Schwartzman (The French Dispatch), Emmy winner Holland Taylor (The Practice), Emmy winner Tony Hale (Veep), and Will Ferrell (The Shrink Next Door). Jen D’Angelo (Hocus Pocus 2) wrote the screenplay and Maggie Haskins, Itay Reiss, Jen D’Angelo, Awkwafina, Sandra Oh, and Gloria Sanchez Productions’ Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum produced. Alex Brown (Hustlers) and Erika Hampson (The Photograph) are on board as executive producers.

According to the official production announcement, filming will take place in New Orleans and Los Angeles.

Per 20th Century Studios and Hulu: “The comedy follows a brilliant but tightly wound, gameshow-obsessed young woman, Anne (Awkwafina) and her estranged, train-wreck of a sister Jenny (Oh), who must work together to help cover their mother’s gambling debts. When Anne’s beloved dog is kidnapped, they set out on a wild, cross-country trek to get the cash the only way they know how: by turning Anne into a bona-fide gameshow champion.”

Awkwafina recently finished up work voicing Scuttle in The Little Mermaid and starring as Rebecca Quincy in director Chris McKay’s Renfield with Nicolas Cage as Dracula. Sandra Oh just wrapped a four-season run on the critically acclaimed, award-winning drama Killing Eve. Oh recently starred as the first woman of color to chair the English department of a fictional college in Netflix’s The Chair. Netflix hasn’t officially canceled or renewed the comedy which premiered in August 2021.
