‘The Blackening’ Horror Comedy Unveils Final Trailer

Creepy things start happening when friends gather for a vacation in Lionsgate’s The Blackening. The nearly two-minute trailer from director Tim Story’s latest film nails the horror comedy vibe and makes good use of audience reactions to punchlines and jump scares.

The cast includes Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, and Dewayne Perkins. Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Wells, Jay Pharoah, and Yvonne Orji also star.

Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins wrote the screenplay, with Story, Oliver, E. Brian Dobbins, Marcei A. Brown, Jason Clark, and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett producing.

Lionsgate released this synopsis of the June 16, 2023 theatrical release:

The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game. Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like A Man, Barbershop) and screenplay and screen story by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) and Dewayne Perkins (The Amber Ruffin Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?
