‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal Stars in a Freaky Thriller

Netflix’s official three minute trailer for Velvet Buzzsaw reveals a trippy thriller set in the art world, complete with paintings that come to life. The film reunites 2014’s Nightcrawler‘s writer/director Dan Gilroy with his real-life spouse Rene Russo and Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain).

Gilroy earned a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for Nightcrawler which found Gyllenhaal playing a journalist. In Velvet Buzzsaw, Gyllenhaal plays an art critic who’s hard to impress until he’s shown paintings by a dead artist who incorporated real blood into his work.

In addition to Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, the cast of Velvet Buzzsaw includes Toni Collette (Wanderlust, Please Stand By), Zawe Ashton (Nocturnal Animals, Not Safe for Work), Tom Sturridge (Far from the Madding Crowd, The Hollow Crown), Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things, After Darkness), Daveed Diggs (black-ish, The Get Down), Billy Magnussen (Tell Me a Story, The Oath), and John Malkovich (The New Pope, Bird Box).

Writer/director Gilroy’s behind the scenes team includes director of photography Robert Elswit, production designer James D. Bissell, editor John Gilroy (Dan’s twin brother), and costume designers Isis Mussenden and Trish Summerville. Two-time Oscar nominee Marco Beltrami (The Hurt Locker, 3:10 to Yuma) provided the film’s score.

Netflix will release the drama in select theaters and on the streaming service on February 1, 2019.

The Plot:

All art is dangerous.

Velvet Buzzsaw is a satirical thriller set in the contemporary art world scene of Los Angeles where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce.”
