Daisy Ridley describes the difficulties Trudy Ederle faced while attempting to break down barriers in Disney’s Young Woman and the Sea new featurette. Ridley and director Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) shine the light on Ederle’s incredible, record-breaking achievements, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer describing Ederle’s accomplishments as the ultimate underdog story.

In addition to Ridley, the inspirational film stars Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Christopher Eccleston, and Glenn Fleshler. Jeff Nathanson adapted Glenn Stout’s Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World and serves as a producer along with Chad Oman. Joachim Rønning, Daisy Ridley, and John G. Scotti executive produce.

“Daisy Ridley stars as the accomplished swimmer who was born to immigrant parents in New York City in 1905,” reads Disney’s synopsis. “Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement – a 21-mile trek from France to England.”

Young Woman and the Sea opens in theaters for a special engagement on May 31, 2024.
