’13 Reasons Why’ Will Return for a Third Season

After ending season two with a cliffhanger, Netflix has officially announced the critically acclaimed – and controversial – series 13 Reasons Why has been renewed for a third season. 13 Reasons Why season two ended with Justin wondering what comes next after a potentially devastating event was thwarted at a high school dance. The scene, which I won’t ruin by describing in detail, certainly set up a possible storyline to explore in the just-announced third season.

The announcement was accompanied by a 30 second video which gave absolutely nothing away, not even who from the main cast will be returning. It was recently revealed that Katherine Langford (‘Hannah Baker’) doesn’t think she’ll be reprising her role in a third season, given the events in the latter half of season two.

In an interview with EW, Langford said, “I guess if I could put Hannah’s life into season 1 and then say it was kind of like being in purgatory for season 2, and then being able to officially say goodbye to her. It definitely felt like time. For me, letting Hannah go was in season 1; season 2 was for Clay to let her go. It was being able to assist Clay on that journey as Hannah and let Clay have his moment to let Hannah go.”

The cast of the first two seasons included Dylan Minnette as Clay Jensen, Brandon Flynn as Justin Foley, Justin Prentice as Bryce Walker, Alisha Boe as Jessica Davis, Miles Heizer as Alex Standall, Ross Butler as Zach Dempsey, Christian Navarro as Tony Padilla, Devin Druid as Tyler Down, Tommy Dorfman as Ryan, Kate Walsh as Mrs. Baker, Brian D’Arcy James as Mr. Baker, and Derek Luke as Mr. Porter the guidance counselor.

Per Netflix’s official announcement, production will begin on season three of 13 Reasons Why later this year. Season three will consist of 13 hour-long episodes with Netflix targeting a 2019 premiere.

Series creator Brian Yorkey will be returning as showrunner. Yorkey, Joy Gorman, Mandy Teefey, Kristel Laiblin, Tom McCarthy, Steve Golin and Selena Gomez will once again serve as executive producers.

The Plot of 13 Reasons Why Season 1: 13 Reasons Why season one follows teenager Clay Jensen as he returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker — his classmate and crush — who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier.

On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Will Clay be one of them? If he listens, he’ll find out how he made the list. Through Hannah and Clay’s dual narratives, 13 Reasons Why weaves an intricate and heart wrenching story of teenage life that will deeply affect viewers.

Season 2 Description: Season two picks up in the aftermath of Hannah’s death and the start of our characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery. Liberty High prepares to go on trial, but someone will stop at nothing to keep the truth surrounding Hannah’s death concealed. A series of ominous polaroids lead Clay and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up.
