TorrentFreak released its annual list of the most pirated television shows of the year, with HBO’s Game of Thrones topping the 2013 list. The critically acclaimed fantasy series has held the top spot for two years running, and the series’ 2013 finale was downloaded 5.9 million times via BitTorrent. Following not too far behind are Breaking Bad with 4.2 million and The Walking Dead with 3.6 million downloads.

TorrentFreak also reports that Game of Thrones had already set new piracy records this year due to 170,000 people sharing a copy of an episode.

While some network executives believe that the piracy actually results in more legitimate viewers, The Walking Dead executive producer Gale Anne Hurd doesn’t share that opinion. “There’s a mistaken belief by many of my peers that piracy is somehow good, that viewers will develop a habit to pay for it. I’m not sure they really understand other than anecdotal evidence that their ratings go up that the people who pirate are not then going to choose legal downloads or legal viewing in the future,” stated Hurd.
