Box Office Report: ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ Stands Tall in 1st Place

Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom remained in first place over the first weekend of July 2018 with $60 million. The 2018 sequel to 2015’s Jurassic World now sits at $264 million domestically after two weekends in theaters. In comparison, the rebirth of the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World, rang up $106 million over its second weekend in release, domestically. That film went on to gross $652 million domestically and $1 billion internationally over the course of its theatrical run.

However, the big news at the box office comes from the film holding the #2 spot. Pixar’s Incredibles 2 is now the third biggest animated release of all time, behind only 2016’s Finding Dory and 2004’s Shrek. Rounding out the highest grossing animated films top 10 list are The Lion King, Toy Story 3, Frozen, Finding Nemo, The Secret Life of Pets, Despicable Me 2, and Inside Out.

Newcomers Sicario: Day of the Soldado and Uncle Drew were forced to settle with third and fourth place finishes, respectively. According to Box Office Mojo, the original Sicario (released in September 2015) brought in $12 million over its first weekend in domestic wide release following a limited release which earned $401,000. Sicario went on to bring in $84 million over its entire worldwide release before exiting theaters. The sequel appears poised to, at the very least, match that number during its theatrical run.

Up next: The First Purge gets a jump on the weekend with a Wednesday, July 4th opener. Ant-Man and the Wasp follows on Friday, July 6th.
