Box Office Report: ‘Ocean’s 8’ Takes 1st Place from Han Solo

The female-driven Ocean’s 8 topped all of the previous Ocean‘s openings, with audiences turning out in bigger numbers than anticipated to see Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway take over the heist franchise. Ocean’s 11 starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt grossed $38 million over its domestic box office opening weekend in December 2001, and Ocean’s Twelve followed in 2004 and made just a tad bit more at $39 million. 2007’s Ocean’s Thirteen fell below its predecessors, ringing up $36 million during its first weekend in release. The 2018 reboot topped those numbers, bringing in $41 million over the June 8-10th weekend.

A24’s critically acclaimed horror movie, Hereditary, also performed better than expected. The R-rated thriller snagged a $13 million opening weekend, although audiences polled after screening the film weren’t nearly as enthusiastic as critics. Hereditary holds a 93% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes while Cinemascore’s polling shows audiences awarded it a D+ average.

Up next: Ocean’s 8 will be attempting to hold onto its first place finish next weekend when it goes up against Incredibles 2 and Tag.
