NBC has good news and bad news for fans of their summer comedies. The network’s decided to give The Carmichael Show a second season order, however we’ll be saying goodbye to Mr. Robinson after just one summer run. According to NBC, The Carmichael Show averaged 4.7 million viewers and was the most watched summer comedy on ABC, CBS, and NBC since 2007. Those numbers plus positive reviews made giving The Carmichael Show a second season renewal an easy decision for the network.

The half-hour comedy series was inspired by Jerrod Carmichael’s relationship with his father. Carmichael starred in and executive produced the series, with Nick Stoller, Ravi Nandan and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel also executive producing. In addition to Carmichael, the cast of season one included David Alan Grier, Loretta Devine, Amber Stevens West and Lil Rel Howery.

“We’re extremely proud of The Carmichael Show and Jerrod’s voice and point of view is a breath of fresh air in a comedy series,” stated Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment, announcing the renewal. “This show made a big impact with viewers and critics because it’s funny and relatable but also because it’s fearless about discussing issues that are significant in the world today. We appreciate all the hard work that has gone into this new family comedy from the producers, cast, and crew and look forward to bringing it back to the schedule later this season.”

The Season One Plot:

From the comedy of Jerrod Carmichael and Nick Stoller (Neighbors) comes an irreverent sitcom inspired by Jerrod’s relationships with his say-anything contrarian father, therapist-in training girlfriend, ever-hustling brother and mother, who is always, always, always right with Jesus.

Taking the next step and moving in together, Jerrod and his girlfriend, Maxine (Amber Stevens West), are your average young couple trying to make it in the city. They’re smart, motivated and looking to build a fulfilling life together. The only thing standing in their way is family. Between Jerrod’s larger-than-life brother, Bobby (Lil Rel Howery), and his smothering and passionate parents (David Alan Grier, Loretta Devine), Jerrod and Maxine will be put to the test navigating the boundaries of romance, family and sanity.
