Well, that was a confusing headline now wasn’t it? What it means is that eight documentary shorts have advanced in the Documentary Short Subject Oscar race. Of the eight that have moved forward, three to five will actually earn Oscar nominations for the 86th Academy Awards taking place on March 2, 2014.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Documentary Branch watched 40 eligible films before narrowing the possible Oscar nominees to eight.

The documentary shorts advancing are:

CaveDigger
Facing Fear
Jujitsu-ing Reality
Karama Has No Walls
The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life
Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall
Recollections
SLOMO
