Game of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is on board to star in MGM+’s The Black Tapes, based on the popular horror podcast. The eight-episode series is expected to start production early next year in Vancouver. The streamer did not announce a target premiere date.
Terry Miles and Paul Bae created and write the podcast and will write and executive produce the series.
“Dr. Richard Strand (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), a brilliant psychiatrist with a mysterious past, teams with the obsessed, relentless scientist Alex Regan to debunk paranormal cases of hauntings, possessions, disappearances, and sinister legends – the infamous black tapes,” reads MGM+’s synopsis. “But as Strand and Regan unravel the secrets of these events, they uncover a hidden occult world behind our own and must unravel a centuries-old apocalyptic conspiracy.”
Kearie Peak, John Rogers, and Jennifer Court also serve as executive producers.
“The Black Tapes crafts a compelling story around our cultural fascination with the unexplained while delivering the cinematic, classic storytelling that MGM+ audiences expect,” Michael Wright, global head of MGM+, stated. “With Nikolaj’s compelling presence and the creative vision of John Rogers, Kearie Peak, and our talented production team, we’re excited to make something that is both provocative and hugely entertaining.”
Emmy nominee Coster-Waldau’s recent credits include An Optimist’s Guide to the Planet, The Last Thing He Told Me, and King and Conqueror. In addition to The Black Tapes, Coster-Waldau will soon be seen in The Last Mrs. Parrish with Jennifer Lopez.
