20th Century Fox is definitely pleased with the box office showing of the young adult novel adaptation, The Maze Runner, and has set a 2015 release date for the sequel. Staying with what worked, Maze Runner: Scorch Trials will arrive in theaters in 2015 with the same mid-September weekend time frame as The Maze Runner.

Scorch Trials has been confirmed for September 18, 2015 and will be adapted from the second book in James Dashner’s bestselling sci-fi series.

The Maze Runner, starring Dylan O’Brien and Will Poulter, opened to a strong $32 million domestically, easily taking the top spot at the box office and crushing the weekend’s other new release, Liam Neeson’s A Walk Among the Tombstones. Overall, The Maze Runner rang up $81 million internationally on an estimated budget of $34 million.

Here’s the synopsis of The Scorch Trials, courtesy of James Dashner’s official website:

The Scorch Trials picks up where The Maze Runner left off. The Gladers have escaped the Maze, but now they face an even more treacherous challenge on the open roads of a devastated planet. And WICKED has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them. Can Thomas survive in such a violent world?
