Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, and other members of the original cast of My Big Fat Greek Wedding – the biggest sleeper hit of 2002 – are reuniting for a sequel to the romantic comedy. Vardalos tweeted about her involvement in the sequel, saying that with motherhood comes her desire to revisit the characters and continue the story.

“(1 of 2) I’m working on the MBFGWedding sequel; now that I’m experiencing motherhood I feel ready to write this next chapter.” – @NiaVardalos

“(2 of 2) A few jaded press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.” – @NiaVardalos

Thanking all the fans who’ve responded positively to the sequel news, Vardalos added:

“Re: #MyBigFatGreekWedding2, thank you for the love, yes the entire big fat family is invited back for the sequel.” – @NiaVardalos

Way back in 2002 I asked Vardalos and Corbett if they were interested in doing a sequel and, of course, at that time they were still reeling from the fact that they were on a press tour after the film had been in theaters 14 weeks and was showing no signs of slowing down. Vardalos said people had been asking about a sequel, a series, or even a Broadway musical, and she thought it was probably because people really cared about what happened to the family in the movie. “I find that very touching,” said Vardalos. “Jay Leno said that to me; I couldn’t believe it. That was the first thing he did. He came in to my dressing room – I freaked out that he was there. He said, ‘Hey, why don’t you write a sequel?’ I was like, ‘Why are you talking [to me]?’ I couldn’t believe it. [Laughing] I was trying to get used to the fact that I was even at The Tonight Show. I said, ‘Ah, maybe I will.’ He said people really want to know about this family. I thought that was so nice.”

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was made for a budget in the $3 million range and earned over $241 million during its theatrical run. The sequel is said to center around another wedding which will reunite the entire family.
