Epix will be delving into the origin story of Batman’s butler and friend, Alfred Pennyworth, with a new dramatic series. Pennyworth will be executive produced by Gotham‘s Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon and is based on the DC Comics characters created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger.

Season one will consist of 10 one-hour episodes. Epix is targeting a 2019 premiere date.

“As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make EPIX the home of this series. We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny – along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon – on this fantastic origin story,” stated Epix President Michael Wright.

Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon added, “Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the EPIX slate.”

The dramatic series will follow “Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier who forms a security company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne, Bruce’s billionaire father, in 1960’s London.” There’s no word yet on the cast, however Epix did confirm production is expected to kick off later this year.

The series, which was given a straight-to-series order, is a Warner Horizon Scripted Television production.

Epix recently picked up ABC Signature Studios’ Godfather of Harlem starring Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland). Godfather of Harlem is being executive produced by Whitaker and has Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein on board as showrunners. The network’s dark comedy Get Shorty is set to kick off its second season this summer starring Ray Romano and Chris O’Dowd.
