Disney’s having a terrific 2017, edging past the $1 billion mark for the year with the opening of the fifth Pirates film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The fifth film didn’t quite live up to pre-release expectations over its domestic four-day holiday weekend opening, however it hauled in huge numbers at the international box office, adding $208 million to Disney’s treasure chest and making up for the lower than anticipated domestic numbers. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ranks fourth among the five films of the series, with only the first film (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) scoring a lower opening weekend in North America.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in its fourth week in release held off Baywatch, starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, which also fell short of its pre-release estimates. Baywatch, which earned just $22 million over its first four days in release, currently stands at a measly 19% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
