Cartoon Network Announces the Return of the Powerpuff Girls

The Powerpuff Girls is back on Cartoon Network

The Powerpuff Girls are back! Cartoon Network’s ready to reinvigorate the franchise with a brand new series coming in 2016. The original series earned two Emmys and even inspired a feature film back in 2003. And according to Cartoon Network, The Powerpuff Girls is one of the top-grossing brands in the network’s history.

Interest in bringing back the franchise was renewed after the January 2014 airing of the CG special The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed with Ringo Starr. “The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide,” said Rob Sorcher, chief content officer, Cartoon Network. “We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X.”

“As the original ambassador of ‘girl power,’ The Powerpuff Girls brand continues to resonate with people of all ages and there is tremendous excitement around introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation,” added Pete Yoder, vice president of consumer products for North America, Cartoon Network Enterprises. “With proven success and great content plans in place, there’s so much potential that we’re looking forward to explore with our licensing partners in the coming weeks.”

The Powerpuff Girls debuted in 1998 and had a 78 episode run. Created by Craig McCracken, the series “centers on three sugar-coated superheroes whose mission in life alternates between going to school, fighting crime and winning at hopscotch.”
