Jaws @ 50 Documentary: Nat Geo Dives Deep into the Iconic Film

National Geographic goes behind the scenes of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws for the film’s 50th anniversary with the documentary Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story. Nat Geo credits the iconic film with launching its annual sharkfest, and with the celebratory documentary, fans of sharks and all things Jaws will be privy to brand-new details.

Shot on a $9-12 million-ish budget and released in June 1975, the PG-rated horror thriller is credited with being the first summer blockbuster. The 90-minute documentary, directed by Laurent Bouzereau (Faye, Music by John Williams), premieres on July 10, 2025 at 9pm ET/PT on National Geographic and streams the next day on Disney+ and Hulu.

The 50th anniversary documentary features interviews with Steven Spielberg, Joe Alves (production designer), Jonathan Filley (Cassidy), Lorraine Gary (Ellen Brody), Carl Gottlieb (Meadows, screenwriter), Jeffrey Kramer (Hendricks), Ian Shaw (son of Robert Shaw, who played Quint), Jeffrey Voorhees (Alex Kintner), and composer John Williams. Jaws fans J.J. Abrams, Emily Blunt, James Cameron, Cameron Crowe, George Lucas, Greg Nicotero, Jordan Peele, Steven Soderbergh, Guillermo del Toro, and Robert Zemeckis also discuss the impact of Spielberg’s shark film.

Nat Geo offered this description of the documentary:

“This definitive account offers an unfiltered look at the chaos and creativity behind the making of Jaws, featuring never-before-seen footage from Spielberg’s and Benchley’s personal archives, including home videos and rare outtakes. Through candid new reflections, Spielberg recounts the high-stakes production, from battling a malfunctioning mechanical shark and relentless weather delays to his own post-production PTSD and fears the film would end his career.

The documentary also reexamines the infamous ‘Jaws effect’—the wave of shark fear it unleashed—and reframes it as a legacy of awe, curiosity, and enduring respect for the ocean’s top predator. Complemented by brand-new interviews with cast, crew, filmmakers, and shark advocates, Jaws @ 50 captures the full creative and cultural shockwaves of the first summer blockbuster.

But Jaws @ 50 is more than a behind-the-scenes doc; it’s a celebration of a legacy that fueled a global shark obsession and inspired generations of scientists, storytellers, and ocean defenders. Through thoughtful conversations with leading marine advocates and scientists—including Philippe Cousteau, Candace Fields, Austin Gallagher, Gibbs Kuguru, Dr. John Mandelman (New England Aquarium), National Geographic Explorer and photographer Brian Skerry, Dr. Greg Skomal and others—the documentary explores how Jaws reshaped our relationship with the ocean and helped transform public perception of sharks, turning fear into fascination and sparking real-world conservation efforts that continue today.”

The documentary is produced for National Geographic by Amblin Documentaries and Nedland Films. Director Laurent Bouzereau, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, and Markus Keith serve as producers. Executive producers include Wendy Benchley, Laura Bowling, Tracy Rudolph Jackson, and Ted Duvall.

‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Review: A Triumphant Return to Form

Karate Kid: Legends Review
Ben Wang in ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ (Photo by Jonathan Wenk © 2024 CTMG, Inc)

In the summer of ’84, movie fans met Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), who showed his new young friend Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) how to use karate to handle bullies in The Karate Kid. Now, over 40 years later, the spirit and legacy of that first film are revived on the big screen in Karate Kid: Legends.

Karate Kid: Legends begins with Mr. Han (Jackie Chan, reprising his role from the 2010 remake) teaching kung fu to students at his dojo in Beijing. Han lets his nephew Li Fong (Ben Wang, American Born Chinese) practice, even though it’s against Li’s mother’s wishes. Looking for a fresh start, Li’s mom (Ming-Na Wen) moves with Li to New York City with a new rule… ”No fighting!”

Li quickly makes friends with Mia (Sadie Stanley, Cruel Summer), a neighborhood girl whose father, Victor (Joshua Jackson, Doctor Odyssey), is an ex-boxer who owns a small but popular pizzeria. Trouble quickly finds Li when Mia’s ex-boyfriend Connor Day (Aramis Knight, Into the Badlands) spots the two of them riding the subway and is filled with anger and jealousy. Connor overreacts and sucker-punches Li as he and Mia are leaving. Mia warns Li to avoid Connor because he’s an expert at karate who happens to be the current champion of the 5 Boroughs Tournament, a karate competition for big money.

Life gets more complicated for Li when he starts to fall for Mia and gets to know her dad. Li finds out that Victor is in big debt to Connor’s karate teacher/MMA trainer O’Shea (Tim Rozon, Surreal Estate) and could lose the pizzeria.

Mr. Han surprises Li and his mom by visiting unannounced. When he learns what’s troubling Li, Han advises Li that he must train to compete in the karate tournament to help Mia, Victor, and himself. Mr. Han’s aware that Li’s kung fu skills won’t be enough to defeat Connor, so he takes it on himself to get help.

Mr. Han visits Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) in Los Angeles, and here’s where the big connection to the original 1984 film comes in. It turns out Han and Mr. Miyagi were friends many years ago, not long after Daniel was trained by Mr. Miyagi.

“Li means to me what you meant to Sensei Miyagi. I want Li to learn Miyagi karate,” says Han. “I’m sorry, Mr. Han, I wish I could help you,” replies Daniel. “You will,” says Mr. Han.

Daniel insists he’s not going to New York, but Mr. Han remains undaunted. “I will see you in the Big Apple,” says a cheerful Mr. Han, fully aware that Daniel won’t be able to resist helping him.

Of course, Mr. Han is right. Daniel shows up in NY, and together he and Mr. Han instruct Li on a combination of kung fu and karate that will ultimately make him the new Karate Kid.

Exceptionally well directed by Jonathan Entwistle, Karate Kid: Legends is a crowd-pleasing, classic root-for-the-underdog film that has exciting fight sequences and captures the nostalgia of the ‘80s. It’s a feel-good, audience-cheering movie.

Jackie Chan steals almost every scene he’s in as Mr. Han, the Kung Fu master who has a surprise connection to Mr. Miyagi, played by the late, great Pat Morita. Chan infuses both humor and heart into his scenes with Macchio and Wang.

Ben Wang is perfectly cast as Li, the good-natured, extremely likeable young man who is trying to make a new home for himself in New York while still struggling with guilt he feels from a recent family tragedy. Wong has a true presence on the screen and real chemistry with all his fellow cast members. He also has very impressive martial arts skills.

Another big plus is the impressive fight choreography, making it look incredibly fast but also real, except for the scene involving debt-collecting thugs in an alley. The fight scenes do not, however, surpass those in the original film, which remain legendary.

One of the few drawbacks that might have fans of the Cobra Kai series a little disappointed is that Ralph Macchio’s character doesn’t appear in the film until well into the second half. Still, Macchio owns the role of Daniel LaRusso, and to see him pair up with Jackie Chan is martial arts magic. The scenes with Daniel and Mr. Han training Li and trying to one-up each other are cinema gold.

Charming and exciting, Karate Kid: Legends stands out as the best sequel to the original film to date. Fans of The Karate Kid franchise and the Cobra Kai series will walk away entertained.

GRADE: B

Rating: PG-13 for some language and martial arts violence

The Cleaning Lady Description, Courtesy of Fox:

The Cleaning Lady returns for an action-packed season four, with the series’ beloved characters in ever-changing and increasingly dangerous situations. After three seasons of being a pawn caught between the FBI and the world of organized crime, THONY (Yung) makes the bold decision to take charge of her own destiny — by exchanging her cleaning lady uniform for the scrubs of a surgical intern at a small community hospital.

Thony’s return to the medical career she sacrificed for her son, LUCA (Sanchez), opens a new path to citizenship for them both. But to make this happen, she must continue her service to the Sin Cara cartel — not as a cleaning lady, but as the new mob doctor — bringing her ever closer to JORGE (Cabrera), the cartel’s brooding new leader. Under the watchful eye of the hospital’s brusque yet handsome chief resident, DR. SEAN DUPONT (Bonjour), Thony straddles the line between two worlds until they inevitably come crashing into each other.

Newly enthroned as the head of Sin Cara, Jorge has ambitious plans to take the cartel in a surprising, yet lucrative, direction. He’s invested Sin Cara’s assets into a rare earth mine worth billions. It’s easy, legitimate money that will result in generational wealth for them all. But the old dogs of the cartel are unwilling to learn new tricks from their upstart leader, which results in a fracture within the organization. Flanked by his lieutenants, the veteran EL DON (Pardo) and quirky newcomer FENG (Uy), Jorge must fend off a mutiny within Sin Cara, which threatens the lives of everyone he loves.

Even from within the walls of a maximum-security prison, former head of Sin Cara, RAMONA (Del Castillo) remains a threat. She continues to exert influence through her unpredictable proxy on the outside, the loner only known as COWBOY HAT (Norris). But she’s vulnerable on the inside. When a tough prison gang puts Ramona in their crosshairs, she must dig deep into her devious bag of tricks to find a way to survive.

Meanwhile, FIONA (Millan) struggles to keep her cleaning business afloat, leading her into the world of identity theft. CHRIS (Lew) learns the painful truth about first love and channels his raw emotions into an unexplored passion — dance. And JAZ (Bryant) deals with the difficulties of being the perfect child in a decidedly imperfect family.

The Cleaning Lady continues its exploration of the experience of undocumented immigrants and the hurdles they face in this country. The series tells their stories of resourcefulness in the face of institutional adversity and the sacrifices they must make to achieve their American dream.
