‘The Mist’ Season 1 Episode 1 Recap: Family Drama With Only a Touch of Horror

Spike TV’s new horror series The Mist premiered on June 22, 2017 with an episode that introduced the little town of Bridgeville and a handful of characters who’ll be facing the creatures that inhabit the creeping mist. Episode one begins with a soldier waking up in the forest, a spider crawling on his face, and Rufus the dog watching over him. He’s confused and has no idea of his name or if the dog’s his. A quick check of his wallet informs him he’s Bryan Hunt (Okezie Morro), but his happiness over learning his name is short-lived as a mist is crawling toward him through the forest. Rufus doesn’t like it one bit but runs off into it anyway. Bryan chases after him but pulls up short when he hears noises in the mist and then sees his dog’s been decapitated and hung from a tree. Bye, poor Rufus. We hardly knew ye.

The action transitions to Bridgeville Central High School where Eve Copeland (VikingsAlyssa Sutherland) is being disciplined for teaching sex education. She’s placed on administrative leave, something that doesn’t shock her daughter, Alex (Gus Birney), or her supportive husband, Kevin (Morgan Spector). He volunteers to take on another job since dealing with her loss of income is going to be tough, but Eve thinks he works too much as it is. He even volunteers to move which is a big sacrifice since he loves the town. (She doesn’t.)

Eve’s work situation isn’t enough to keep the family down and dad teases Alex about her newfound interest in the football team that stems from her attraction to quarterback Jay Heisel. Alex denies she’s interested and they drop the subject.

Talk about uncomfortable family dinners… Adrian (Russell Posner) keeps asking his parents if he can leave, but they won’t reply. Finally, his mom reminds him his dad “can’t hear him” when he’s wearing makeup.

Over at the high school football game, Adrian – having escaped the dinner from hell – and Alex debate oppression in the sport of football. Meanwhile, a woman is getting the crap beat out of her by a burly man who’s seeking information on a guy named Rob. She works her way loose and kills the aggressor with a pitchfork.

Back to Bryan, he’s running from the mist and heading into town while over at the football game Alex is upset her mom won’t let her go to a party with Jay (Luke Cosgrove). We also learn Kevin’s brother doesn’t think much of his sibling, and that Jay’s dad is a cop. And, it’s also revealed Eve’s the bad cop in the family while Kevin’s the good cop.

Although Eve’s not on board, Kevin secretly tells Alex she can go to the party after her mom’s asleep but she has to take Adrian with her. “No drinking. Back by midnight, okay?” says Kevin, and Alex smiles. Show of hands of those who don’t think this will end well.)

Alex and Adrian make it to the party and Adrian’s immediately bullied by one of the players because he’s gay. Jay steps in and calls his teammate off and apologizes for the guy’s behavior.

Bryan is out of his mind when he arrives at the police station, demanding help and claiming something in the mist killed his dog. When he tries to grab a gun, the cops take him down and place him in a cell. He continues to warn them something’s coming, but of course, they don’t listen.

Mia (the pitchfork killer) enters a house looking for Mrs. Lambert. The current occupant doesn’t know Mia and reveals Mrs. Lambert died two months earlier, they couldn’t find her daughter, and all of her possessions are in storage.

Bright and early the next morning, Kevin checks on Alex but she’s not home. It’s 6am and Eve wakes up to join in the search for Alex. They find her crying in the backyard. She confesses she got very drunk at the party and remembers being helped upstairs and then blacking out. Eve can’t believe Kevin let Alex go to the party, but she tries to comfort her daughter. Alex then reveals when she came to she could feel what happened and found blood on the sheets. She apologizes to her mom and won’t let her dad touch her. She claims Adrian knows what happened and that Jay was responsible.

The cops finally talk to Bryan who still can’t remember any of his personal details. They slam him against the bars, notice his Arrowhead shoulder patch, and say they’re going to call the base to find out more about him.

Kevin and Alex arrive at the police station and tell Jay’s dad, Police Chief Connor Heisel (Darren Pettie), they need to speak to an officer – but not to him. Shortly thereafter, cops arrive at school and pick up Jay, letting him know (in front of his friends) he’s being investigated for sexual assault.

Kevin and Eve’s neighbor, Natalie Raven (Frances Conroy), is tending to her yard when she spots dozens of toads leaping from the lake up onto her grass. She then notices dozens of birds also flying overhead, away from some unseen threat.

Alex is examined by a doctor who tells Kevin there were signs of intercourse but not of any violence. She also reveals there were traces of Triazolam in her blood.

Adrian holds Alex on her bed, and she admits she can’t do anything – watch TV, listen to music, etc – because it will be the first song or show she watched after the rape. Adrian admits he’s concerned everyone will believe Jay and think Alex is a liar.

Kevin and Eve have it out in the kitchen, with Eve angry she’s always been the bad cop. Their talk is interrupted when a rock sails through the window. Kevin runs outside as the car drives away, and he sees “whore” has been painted on the street outside their house.

Jay and his dad head to a lawyer, and Jay wonders why his dad believes he did it.

Catching up once again with the pitchfork killer, Mia (Danica Curcic) takes a pill in a motel room, clearly overwhelmed. She picks up a gun and then heads back to the house she visited earlier. This time she goes directly to the shed in the backyard. She digs around in the dirt inside the shed and finds a bag, but she’s stopped by the homeowner. Sirens are heard in the background as he looks into the bag which is full of money. She kicks him and escapes, but without the bag. She runs just a few yards and stops at Anna Lambert’s grave, which apparently is in the front yard or a park with steps of the Lambert house’s front door. The cops easily capture her and she’s taken to jail where she’s placed in a cell next to Bryan.

Natalie (the toad-watching neighbor) researches conspiracy theories online at the library, wondering why the frogs were in her yard. She’s a believer in conspiracies, but her husband isn’t and doesn’t want her to do any research.

Kevin pays a visit to the police station and wants to speak with Officer Pundik, but Pundik is out picking up Adrian. Speak of the devil, Adrian and Pundik (Kevin O’Grady) walk into the station at that exact moment. The Jay/Alex case suddenly takes a back burner when there are sounds of a car crash outside the station. The cops and Kevin step outside and see mist is hovering over the town, obscuring everything more than a few blocks away.

Alex and Eve head out of town to get away from the gossip. Alex isn’t happy about it, but Eve says she’s doing it just to protect her. Alex then reveals she – and everyone in town – know that Eve was a slut growing up. (Seriously? This better not be the family we’re supposed to be rooting for to survive.) They stop at the mall so Eve can pick up a prescription for Valium while Alex waits in the car.

Back at the station, the cops and Kevin notice the mist is advancing steadily and moving against the wind. Kevin gets a call from Alex, asking him to go with them and he says he’ll meet up with them later. The cell phone call is dropped as the mist arrives and covers the sidewalk where the cops and Kevin are standing, dumbfounded.

Officer Pudnick stays outside to snap multiple selfies in the mist, making incredibly goofy faces and giving the thumbs-up sign while Heisel and Kevin head back into the station. Bugs begin crawling over Pudnik’s body and he freaks out, slapping them away and screaming. Kevin and Heisel hear him yelling and return outside, and Heisel sees something in the mist that causes him to panic. He says they have to leave immediately, but Kevin takes the time to go back into the station to retrieve Adrian.

Over at the library, the mist has arrived and Natalie and her hubby decide to go ahead and ride their bikes home through it. They immediately become disoriented and can’t even locate their bikes. A man holding a gun emerges from the fog and asks if they’re real. Natalie says they are, but he shoots Natalie’s husband (we never even learned his name) in the head anyway, immediately killing him. The stranger apologizes and then kills himself.

Natalie screams and stumbles off through the mist. She makes her way to a church, obviously in shock.

Inside the police station, Bryan says there’s something in the mist that killed his dog. Mia wants to know what Kevin’s going to do, and Adrian voices his opinion that Mia should remain locked up. Bryan claims he’s only in jail because the cops thought he was crazy, but actually, he was warning them about the mist. Mia plays on Kevin’s goodness, telling him he’ll never be able to live with himself if he leaves them behind to die. She promises to help him if he lets her out.

Officer Heisel doesn’t wait, freaking out and leaving Kevin and the others behind at the station.

Now it’s the mall’s turn to be covered in mist. Alex steps outside the car as the mist advances and is immediately pushed to the ground by a stranger who frantically runs past her.

Inside the mall, the electricity has gone out and a few people stare outside at the mist. Meanwhile, Alex spots a dead body on the ground and after her mom finds her in the mist, Alex says they have to get back inside.

Alex and Eve make their way back into the mall where, strangely, it appears people are going about their business as usual despite the lack of electricity and the mist. Alex tries to stop the mom who complained Eve was teaching sex ed from exiting the mall, but she doesn’t listen and steps outside with her son. They hear a scream and then the woman appears at the window with a torn-up face before being yanked away by some unseen force.

Kevin takes a gun from the cabinet but refuses to give one to Mia. Pudnik stumbles into the station and he’s definitely been attacked. A bug crawls from his mouth as he tries to choke Kevin before being shot by Mia, who miraculously somehow has a gun she wasn’t supposed to have.

Inside the mall, people are beginning to realize this isn’t a normal shopping day. Eve assures Alex everything will be fine and that she’ll keep her safe. As they hug, Alex spots Jay sitting nearby.

The final scene shows the mist has completely taken over the town.

The Mist Episode One Review:

The first episode’s slow going and the mist doesn’t really make an appearance until 30+ minutes in. Episode one’s more of a family drama than a thriller, and unfortunately, the family at the center of the action is not at all compelling. The introduction of a rape storyline in the first episode was jarring and felt gimmicky in a way. However, until episode two arrives it’s impossible to say if there’s a significant, necessary reason for its insertion into the plot. I’ll withhold judgment until episode two arrives, but at this point, I’m rooting for the mist to wipe out the citizens of Bridgeville.

GRADE: C

The Mist airs on Spike TV on Thursdays at 10pm ET/PT.

‘Fargo’ Season 3 Episode 10 Recap: Nikki Gets Even in the Season Finale

Fargo Season 3 Episode 10

The season three finale of FX’s critically acclaimed dramatic series, Fargo, begins with Deputy Gloria Burgle (Carrie Coon) typing up her resignation letter. Elsewhere, IRS Agent Larue Dollard (Hamish Linklater) looks over the paperwork he received on Stussy Lots Ltd. And over at Emmit Stussy’s house, Emmit (Ewan McGregor) is being forced into signing paperwork by V. M. Varga (David Thewlis), with Meemo (Andy Yu) looking over one shoulder and V.M. hovering over the other.

Something catches Larue’s eye that he hadn’t noticed before. It’s a small slip of paper with a typewritten message reading, “We should talk. Gloria Burgle 555-0122.” He gives Gloria a call while over at the station she’s nearly out the door with her belongings. When the phone rings she can’t resist picking it up, but then is confused when Larue has questions about the documents she sent. Gloria quickly figures out the connection when he mentions Stussy Lots, tax fraud, and V.M. Varga. She snatches up her resignation letter and heads off to meet with Agent Dollard.

It appears Nikki (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Mr. Wrench (Russell Harvard) are preparing for a gun battle, sawing off shotguns and laying out their collection of weapons on a motel room bed.

Emmit’s also ready to fight back after signing a stack of papers passed to him by Meemo. He lays his head on the table, claiming to be exhausted while Varga goes off about food knowing it’s food. When Varga takes a call from Nikki, Emmit thinks it’s time to make his move. He grabs Meemo’s gun and points it alternately at Meemo and Varga. Of course, Varga and Meemo get the better of him, knocking him out and retrieving the gun. While he lies unconscious on the floor, they clean up the place, making sure not to leave a trace of their presence.

Varga, Meemo, and a handful of Varga’s men arrive at the meeting point and are instructed by a young boy to head into a nearby warehouse. They follow the kid to the door but pause outside as two of the men check out the deserted lobby. It’s clear, but there’s a message in red spray paint on the floor telling them to head to the third floor, locker 327. They call for an elevator and wait, guns drawn, for one of the two elevators to arrive. The first one is empty so they get in and head to the third floor, leaving two men behind to take elevator #2.

Varga hangs out in the elevator as Meemo and the rest of the thugs head down the hall to locker 327. There, they find a chair with a note instructing them to leave the money and go to the second floor for the hard drives. One of the thugs passes that note to Meemo as in the elevator Varga receives a text telling him to get out because the IRS has the hard drives.

Varga warns his men but then closes the elevator before they can get inside. Inside the elevator, Varga can hear gunfire and screaming coming from the third-floor hallway.

The two henchmen waiting by the cars outside the warehouse are dead feet from the warehouse’s entrance. Inside the lobby, Nikki waits with a shotgun for the elevator to descend and deliver Varga. Unfortunately, Varga’s coat is on the floor of the elevator but he’s somehow managed to escape.

Nikki covers elevator #2 as the door opens and relaxes when its only passenger is Mr. Wrench carrying the briefcase with $2 million. It’s covered in blood and Nikki tells Mr. Wrench the money is all his; she just wants Emmit Stussy. Nikki takes two small stacks of money and the shotgun and heads off, alone.

Fargo Season 3 Episode 10

Returning to Emmit’s place, the camera zooms in as he opens his eyes. The 2-cent stamp is glued to his forehead but he doesn’t notice. He’s stunned to see Varga and his men are gone and the house has been left clean as if they were never there. It’s not until he’s about to open his car door that he notices the stamp is on his forehead. He takes it off and tosses it to the ground as if it means nothing anymore.

Emmit arrives at his office to find workers installing new signs indicating the company doing business there now is named Realignment. He enters what used to be his office and Ruby Goldfarb (Mary McDonnell), who’s been working with Varga all along, greets him with the news his company is in debt $300 million and has been sold to her. She instructs him to file for Chapter 11 immediately but then reveals his personal wealth is all intact and carefully hidden. After delivering that news, she has two security guards show him out of what used to be his office.

Catching up with Gloria and Larue, the IRS agent is explaining Stussy Lots used to be just a normal parking lot business completely on the up-and-up. However, they received a loan of a million dollars from a fake company and that’s when everything went south for Emmit Stussy’s company. Varga was added as a partner and a leverage bleed-out took place, with Varga acquiring Stussy Lots and borrowing millions of dollars in its name, and then selling the company for way below what it was worth. That’s legal if you follow the law and pay taxes, but Varga did not. Their talk is interrupted by a call about the warehouse slaughter.

Gloria arrives on the scene as Meemo’s being wheeled out on a gurney, dead. Officer Winnie Lopez (Olivia Sandoval) is already there and reports there are five dead bodies on the 3rd floor and they have a photo of Mr. Wrench (who they don’t recognize) and Nikki inside the building. She then shows Gloria a photo of Varga, the apparent target. Gloria figures out after seeing the photos that it was Nikki who sent the Stussy Lots paperwork to the IRS. She also figures out Nikki will now be after Emmit.

Speak of the devil… Emmit’s the only car on the road when his vehicle breaks down in an area without cell phone coverage. He smashes his phone on the ground in frustration. Fortunately, a truck arrives on the scene shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, it’s driven by Nikki.

Emmit knows he’s in trouble when Nikki steps out of the truck, shotgun in hand. She asks him, “Are you as low as you can go?” Emmit says yesterday he thought he was at his lowest while sitting in jail, but now this has happened today. Nikki tells him she knows Varga plucked him and she’s there to finish him off. He claims he didn’t mean to kill Ray, but Nikki’s not in the least bit sympathetic. She confuses Emmit but telling him Ray’s a kitten now and then begins reciting the verse Paul Marrane (Ray Wise) taught her at the bowling alley.

Before Nikki can pull the trigger, a cop arrives on the scene. Nikki tries to get him to leave, keeping the conversation upbeat as she urges him to drive away. Emmit manages to indicate Nikki has a gun and she grabs the shotgun she stashed on Emmit’s bumper when the cop pulled up. The cop and Nikki take aim at each other and fire at pretty much the same time. Both fall to the ground, instantly dead. Emmit’s unscathed and after examining the bodies, he gets in his car and drives off.

Later, Gloria arrives on the scene and watches Nikki and the officer’s bodies being removed. She says, “Okay, then,” a very Fargo-ish reaction.

Emmit, shaken by everything that’s gone down, shows up at his estranged wife’s door. When she opens it, he falls to his knees, sobbing and holding her tight.

Flash-forward five years and we learn Emmit declared personal bankruptcy in 2011 and pled guilty to misdemeanor tax fraud. He was given a sentence of two years on probation. A note on the screen says rumor has it Emmit has $20 million stashed away in an off-shore account.

The family is seated around the table eating dinner, with Sy Feltz (Michael Stuhlbarg) and his wife joining the Stussys. Sy doesn’t move but he manages to say he’s feeling as good as new. (That’s obviously not true.) Emmit remembers they left a salad in the refrigerator and goes to his kitchen to retrieve it. He glances at the family photos on the refrigerator door (noticeably absent is any photo with Ray). As he opens the door to grab the salad, a muzzle appears in the frame. The camera pans the length of the gun to reveal Mr. Wrench has broken into Emmit’s home. Mr. Wrench shoots Emmit in the back of the head. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Gloria Burgle is now an officer with the Department of Homeland Security. She sits across the table from V. M. Varga who was just picked up entering the country and who at first does not recognize her. He claims to be a citizen of the air when she asks where he lives, and when she brings out his picture from the elevator in the warehouse, Varga responds by asking, “Are you familiar with the Russian saying the past is unpredictable?” She thinks he made that up and he doesn’t argue with her. They chat about the Stussy murders, evidence, and argue with reality.

Gloria asks Varga if he knew Emmit was murdered three months ago in his home, and Varga doesn’t react to the news either way. Gloria asks point blank if he killed Emmit and he doesn’t reply. She informs him agents are about to arrive and take him to Rikers. He’ll be charged with three counts of felony money laundering and six counts of conspiracy to commit murder. Meanwhile, she’ll be spending her Saturday with her son at the state fair.

Varga says, “No, that’s not what’s going to happen next. What’s going to happen next is this, in five minutes that door is going to open and a man you can’t argue with will tell me I’m free to go. I will stand from this chair and disappear from the world, so help me god.”

Gloria replies, “Rikers and Snickers bars. You’ll see.”

Varga won’t debate the matter any longer and closes his eyes. The camera pans to the clock as Gloria smiles, certain she’ll be proven correct.

Black Panther‘s Chadwick Boseman stars in the upcoming dramatic film, Marshall, which has just debuted the first official trailer. Boseman plays United States Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in the 2017 release based on a true story and directed by Reginald Hudlin. Jake Koskoff and Michael Koskoff wrote the script and Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, Sterling K. Brown, and James Cromwell co-star.

Open Road Films is planning an October 13, 2017 theatrical release.

The Plot: Long before he sat on the United States Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) was a young rabble-rousing attorney for the NAACP. The new motion picture, Marshall, is the true story of his greatest challenge in those early days – a fight he fought alongside attorney Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a young lawyer with no experience in criminal law: the case of black chauffeur Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown), accused by his white employer, Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson), of sexual assault and attempted murder.

NBC’s World of Dance has added American Ballet Theatre star Misty Copeland as a guest judge on season one. Copeland will be guest judging episodes airing on July 18 and July 25, 2017 during the third round of the competition. Per NBC, round three is known as “The Cut” and is when the competitors “face the deepest and most intense cut of the season. More than half of the acts will be sent home, and only the top two acts from each division will move on to the Division Final.”

Season one’s judging panel includes Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough, and NE-YO. Jenna Dewan-Tatum is pulling double duty as host and mentor to the competitors.

World of Dance has been averaging 8.7 million viewers over its first three weeks, and is now the highest-rated first season summer series since CBS’ Under the Dome debuted in 2013. The series is executive produced by Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Kris Curry, Matilda Zoltowski, Alex Katz, David Gonzalez, Matthew Everitt, and Al Hassas.

“When judging the best of the best, we knew we needed an all-star guest judge with passion and credibility to mentor these incredible dancers,” stated judge/executive producer Jennifer Lopez. “Misty Copeland is at the top of her game and we are so honored that she was able to lend her expertise and experience to the World of Dance stage.”

Series Details: In partnership with preeminent global dance brand World of Dance, the series brings the world’s elite dancers together to compete in epic battles of artistry, precision and athleticism. Solo dancers will compete against duos and crews in an unlimited range of dance, including hip-hop, popping, locking, tap, ballet, break dancing, ballroom, stomping and more.

Handpicked from qualifying events around the nation and thousands of online submissions, competitors are divided into three divisions: Junior (any size act, 17 years old and under), Upper (groups of 1-4, 18 and older) and Team (groups of 5+, 18 and older). Our panel of experts score the acts using a precise point system developed by World of Dance, using the following criteria: Performance, Technique, Choreography, Creativity and Presentation. The competition consists of five rounds: Qualifiers, Duels, The Cut, Divisional Final and the World Final. In the first four rounds, dancers only compete within their division, but in the World Final – the winner from each division will compete against each other for the $1 million grand prize.

Filming has just gotten underway in Atlanta on New Line Cinema’s comedy film, Tag, starring Ed Helms (The Hangover), Jake Johnson (New Girl), Hannibal Buress (The Nice Guys), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker). The cast also includes Annabelle Wallis (The Mummy), Rashida Jones (Angie Tribeca), Isla Fisher (Now You See Me), and Leslie Bibb (American Housewife).

The Wall Street Journal article “It Takes Planning, Caution to Avoid Being It” inspired the film. New Line’s set a June 29, 2018 theatrical release date.

But he knows they’re coming…and he’s ready. Based on a true story, Tag shows how far some guys will go to be the last man standing.
