‘Secrets of the Penguins’ Docuseries: Blake Lively Narrates the 3-Part Series

National Geographic’s new Secrets of the Penguins trailer shows just how intelligent the tuxedoed birds are and how they’re really family-oriented. Blake Lively (Another Simple Favor) narrates the three-part documentary series, which promises to reveal never-before-seen behavior.

The docuseries comes from Emmy winner Nat Geo Explorer Bertie Gregory and is executive produced by National Geographic’s Pam Caragol, Lightstorm Earth’s James Cameron and Maria Wilhelm, and Talesmith’s Ruth Roberts and Martin Williams. Secrets of the Penguins premieres on April 20, 2025 at 8pm ET/PT on Nat Geo, and on April 21 on Disney+ and Hulu. It arrives on Disney Channel on Earth Day, April 22.

National Geographic released the following description of the three-part docuseries:

“While many documentaries have explored penguins, Secrets of the Penguins takes it to a whole new level. Talesmith’s team, led by Bertie and over 70 world-class scientists and filmmakers, embarked on a two-year, globe-spanning adventure—from the rocky beaches of Cape Town and the icy shores of South Georgia Island to the tropical Galapagos and Namibia’s desert caves—capturing penguins like never before. Pushing the boundaries of wildlife filmmaking, a three-person crew endured an astonishing 274 days filming on the Ekström Ice Shelf in Antarctica, home to a colony of 20,000 emperor penguins.

Facing one of the planet’s harshest environments, they captured never-before-seen moments like a bonded pair of emperors practicing egg transfers with a snowball to hone their skills for the moment they would need to transfer a real egg, tenacious chicks navigating brash ice amid climate change, and young penguins using their beaks to hoist themselves out of a crevasse.

With breathtaking, award-winning cinematography and cutting-edge camera technology, the series captures even more never-before-seen and rare moments in the wild. For the first time, witness healthy ‘rockaroni’ chicks—a rare hybrid of rockhopper and macaroni penguins—offering a fascinating glimpse into potential evolution and adaptation. Other remarkable scenes include a brave rockhopper fending off a southern sea lion, the first-ever footage of a hidden cave colony of African penguins, and clever Galapagos penguins teaming up for a daring heist: stealing fish straight from pelican beaks and skillfully herding sardine bait balls.”

Secrets of the Penguins Episode Guide

“Heart of the Emperors”
The emperors are the largest and strongest penguins, living in the coldest and most extreme environment on Earth. Embedded with an Antarctic colony, National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory encounters social skills never filmed before, discovering bonds forged from birth between family, friends, and strangers are the difference between life and death.

“Survival of the Smartest”
Millions of years ago, a group of penguins left the ice, riding powerful currents and arriving in strange new lands. They reshaped traditions for deserts and tropics—and even to live among humans. Tested to the extreme, they became perhaps the smartest of all penguins. National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory discovers the penguins’ problem-solving, “talking,” and enduring search for new worlds.

“Rebels with a Cause”
It takes a special type of courageous penguin to survive the fierce Southern Ocean, but 40 million crowd its isolated, rocky outposts, and they are some of the most successful penguins on Earth. National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory follows the rockhoppers, gentoos, and macaronis to discover a world of risk-takers, rebels, and unconventional parents.

‘Doc’ Episode 10: Finale Preview with Photos, Trailer and Air Date

Fox’s Doc episode nine was titled “What Goes Up…” so it’s only natural that episode 10, the season finale, is called “…Must Come Down.” Season one will wrap up on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at 9pm ET/PT. On February 26, Fox announced the series will return for season two.

Molly Parker plays Chief of Internal Medicine Dr. Amy Larsen, Omar Metwally is Dr. Michael Hamda, Amirah Vann is Dr. Gina Walker, Jon Ecker is Dr. Jake Heller, and Anya Banerjee is Dr. Sonya Maitra. Season one guest stars include Scott Wolf as Dr. Richard Miller and Patrick Walker as Dr. TJ Coleman.

“…Must Come Down” Plot: A mass casualty event requires all hands on deck at Westside Hospital. Amidst the chaos, Gina deals with a devastating revelation, and Amy’s forced to confront her demons.

Doc Series Description, Courtesy of Fox:

After a late-night car crash results in severe head trauma, Amy wakes up from surgery with no recollection of the patients she’s treated, the colleagues she’s crossed, and the tragedy that caused her to push almost everyone away. The relief that Amy gets from seeing her family post-accident is fleeting when she learns the incomprehensible—that she and her beloved husband, Dr. Michael Hamda, have been divorced for four years. In fact, her entire family is not at all as she remembers them, rocking her foundation to the core.

Amy’s best friend, neuropsychiatrist Dr. Gina Walker, has little guidance to give her for this new reality since matters of the brain are, even to the experts, still a big mystery. While Gina is hopeful, she does not know if Amy will ever recover her memories. In Amy’s fragile state, Gina must choose carefully what information from the past eight years to reveal to her, scared that too much too soon could prove more harmful than good. This includes her secret romance with Dr. Jake Heller, since Amy now has no recollection of ever meeting him before, let alone being in a passionate relationship with him. Certain other memories, those close to her believe, would perhaps be too painful to relive and are best left forgotten.

In a fateful irony, that’s the fervent hope for Amy’s colleague, Dr. Richard Miller, who has now been promoted to take over as Chief of Internal Medicine after Amy’s accident. Richard is desperate for Amy’s memories to never return since she was the only person to uncover his career-ending mistake—another thing she now doesn’t recall.

And Richard isn’t alone in relishing Amy’s predicament—her previously contentious and unkind behavior left her with more than a few enemies at the hospital, including Dr. Sonya Maitra. While she does remember Dr. TJ Coleman, she does not recall that he became a doctor—or that it was she who inspired him to do so.

Feeling completely off balance and having to piece together what happened through the prism of other people’s subjective points of view, practicing medicine remains the one constant for Amy, and she is determined to become a doctor again. While she may never get back what she’s lost, Amy knows she’s been given a second chance to do things differently, and she will not take that gift for granted.

‘Novocaine’ Review: Jack Quaid Feels No Pain in This Bloody, Comedic Action Ride

Novocaine Review Starring Jack Quaid
Jack Quaid as “Nate” in ‘Novocaine’ (Photo © 2025 Paramount Pictures)

His name is Nathan Caine. He can’t feel pain. His nickname is Novocaine. Sounds like the premise for a great action movie, huh?

Novocaine stars Jack Quaid (Companion) as the aforementioned Nate Caine, who works as a mild-mannered assistant bank manager. But he does have a medical condition that prevents him from feeling pain, so, as one of his tellers named Sherry (Amber Midthunder from Prey) says, he’s a “superhero.” Nate is sweet on Sherry, so when a botched robbery at the bank results in her being taken hostage, he decides to go after her himself.

Now, despite what the premise sounds like, Novocaine is not a typical action movie. Well, it is, but the fact that Nate is not a burly, muscled-up goon means that, yeah, he’s a little more relatable than, say, a Jason Statham or a Dwayne Johnson. And the no-pain thing more than makes up for any muscular shortcomings that Nate may have.

The screenplay for Novocaine was written by Lars Jacobson (Day of the Dead: Bloodline), and for the most part, it follows the formula. There’s the reluctant hero, the heist gone bad, the double cross, and the revenge motif. It’s pretty much all there. The only thing that makes Novocaine fresh at all is Nate’s condition (which is a real condition called Congenital Insensitivity to Pain and Anhidrosis). This provides more humor than action, as most of Nate’s enemies don’t realize that they’re never going to hurt him, no matter how hard or how much they beat him. There’s even a hysterical scene where Nate is being tortured and he’s pretending to feel the pain in order to buy himself time. Of course, he’s trying to act, but has no experience feeling real pain.

But that’s the extent of the fun of Novocaine. It seems like it would be the kind of movie that was directed by stunt people, like the John Wick or Deadpool movies, but alas, that isn’t the case, as it was helmed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, the duo behind Villains and Significant Other. So, while it is a serviceable action movie, and it definitely has its comedic moments, overall, it lacks the ridiculous fun of, say, The Beekeeper. The fun is in the subtleties and not in the broad strokes. There are periodic chuckles amongst the audience instead of a constant grin.

The biggest strength of the film is Jack Quaid. His charisma and charm carry the film. His surprising ability to do action, even if it’s mostly just taking a beating, is a massive plus. His Nate is likable and relatable, so the audience does root for him, especially because the villains in Novocaine are very unlikable. Which, again, is just part of the formula that the movie follows to a T.

Another aspect of Novocaine that deserves a shout-out is the special effects makeup. Of course, since the narrative puts Nate through dozens of wounding, maiming, and torturous scenarios, he takes a licking. Arrows stick into legs, knives go through hands, and spiked balls swoop into backs. And all this happens with the childish glee of a slasher movie. Blood flows freely, as do other bodily fluids. Novocaine is a gorefest.

For what it is, Novocaine is fine. The clever premise defines its main character more than it defines the movie itself. It falls apart a bit in the third act and regresses into stereotypical action tropes, as if the clever premise isn’t quite enough to sustain a full movie. But it’s got enough comedy to keep it interesting, and there are only so many ways for guys to punch each other. So, yeah. It’s fine.

Critics Choice Awards winner Cristin Milioti (The Penguin) will play mom to Simu Liu’s dad in Netflix’s animated adventure In Your Dreams. Milioti is one of the latest actors to join the production, joining Liu and Craig Robinson, who were previously announced to lend their voices to the family-friendly film.

New cast members also include Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Elias Janssen, Gia Carides, Omid Djalili, SungWon Cho, and Zachary Noah Piser.

In Your Dreams is a comedy adventure about Stevie and her brother Elliot who journey into the absurd landscape of their own dreams,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “If the siblings can withstand a snarky stuffed giraffe, zombie breakfast foods, and the queen of nightmares, the Sandman will grant them their ultimate dream come true…the perfect family.”

Alex Wood is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erik Benson. Benson is co-directing.

“When I started this film, I set out to tell a heartfelt story that explored the magical and often hilariously absurd world of dreams,” said Wood. “What I didn’t expect was how memorable and emotional the performances were going to be. I guess that’s what happens when you’re lucky enough to work with such an extraordinary cast!”

Wood added, “Cristin is an EGOT-level talent. She can sing. She can act. I haven’t seen her dance, but I’m sure she could give Ginger Rogers a run for her money. You believe every performance Cristin gives, and that’s every director’s dream come true.

Jolie and Elias are the heart and soul of this movie. They truly carry the film, which is remarkable for any actor, but even more so for performers their age. Each recording session felt like playtime, and I hope audiences have as much fun watching the film as we had making it.”

Timothy Hahn and Gregg Taylor are on board as producers. John Debney is writing the music.

“As someone whose worldview was heavily influenced by the animation I devoured as a kid, I’m excited to be a part of Alex Woo’s moving and tender film,” said Milioti, commenting on the casting announcement.

Netflix is targeting a fall 2025 premiere.
