The CW’s Four-Part Crossover: Plot Details Revealed

CW Superheroes Crossover

The CW’s released plot descriptions for their epic four-way crossover event involving Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. The four part crossover episodes will air the week of November 28, 2016, kicking off with Supergirl and finishing up with Legends of Tomorrow on December 1st. The much-anticipated mingling of the casts was made much easier when Supergirl joined The CW after airing season one on CBS.

Supergirl‘s second season benefited from a network switch-up, and the current season’s stronger than the show’s rookie debut.

Supergirl‘s season two episode eight is titled ‘Medusa’ and was directed by Stefan Pleszczynski from a script by Jessica Queller and Derek Simon. Episode eight of season three of The Flash is titled ‘Invasion’ and was directed by Dermott Downs from Aaron Helbing and Todd Helbing’s script. Arrow will celebrate its 100th episode with season five’s eighth episode written by Marc Guggenheim and Wendy Mericle. Gregory Smith directed Legends of Tomorrow‘s part of the cross-over event, the show’s seventh episode of season two.

SUPERGIRL “Medusa” – A NIGHT OF CONFESSIONS; THE EPIC SUPERHERO CROSSOVER KICKS OFF TONIGHT — Eliza (guest star Helen Slater) comes to town to celebrate Thanksgiving with her daughters. Alex (Chyler Leigh) decides it’s time to come out to her mother; Kara (Melisa Benoist) is shocked when Eliza suggests Mon-El (Chris Wood) has feelings for her, and Winn (Jeremy Jordan) and James (Mehcad Brooks) consider telling Kara the truth about the Guardian. Meanwhile, CADMUS unleashes a virus that instantly kills any alien in the vicinity so Kara enlists an unexpected ally – Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath). The epic superhero crossover kicks off tonight when Barry Allen (guest star Grant Gustin) and Cisco Ramon (guest star Carlos Valdes) seek Kara’s help with an alien invasion on their Earth.

THE FLASH “Invasion!” – IT’S HEROES VS. ALIENS IN THIS EPIC CROSSOVER EVENT — When aliens called the Dominators attack Central City, Barry (Grant Gustin) speeds over to Star City to ask the Green Arrow (guest star Stephen Amell) for help in stopping them. Realizing the battle against the Dominators is bigger than they thought, they track down the Legends of Tomorrow, and Barry and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) create a breach to bring back a secret weapon – Supergirl (guest star Melissa Benoist). Once all of the super friends are assembled, they come up with a plan to attack, but a shocking secret related to Flashpoint is revealed, and suddenly, no one is sure who they can trust.

Meanwhile, Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) wants to join the battle against the aliens but Iris (Candice Patton) tells him he’s not ready.

ARROW “Invasion!” – ARROW CELEBRATES 100 EPISODES; THE EPIC SUPERHERO CROSSOVER CONTINUES — Oliver (Stephen Amell) wakes up to a life where he never got on The Queen’s Gambit. Robert (guest star Jamey Sheridan) and Moira Queen (guest star Susanna Thompson) are alive and well. Laurel (guest star Katie Cassidy) is his loving fiancée and their wedding is imminent. Everything seems perfect, but Oliver starts to notice small imperfections that make him question this new reality.

Meanwhile, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) and the recruits take on a new threat with help from The Flash (guest star Grant Gustin) and Supergirl (guest star Melissa Benoist).

DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW “Invasion!” — ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL IN THIS CROSSOVER OF SUPERHEROES — After learning the Dominators’ plan for the world, the Legends must work together with The Flash (guest star Grant Gustin), Supergirl (guest star Melissa Benoist) and Green Arrow (guest star Stephen Amell) to kill them once and for all. Meanwhile, Stein (Victor Garber) figures out, with the help of others, how the team can terminate the Dominators but is distracted by the aberration he realizes he created in 1987. Brandon Routh, Franz Drameh, Dominic Purcell, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Nick Zano and Caity Lotz also star.

Oliver Bell Interview on Playing ‘Salem’s Devil and Working on ‘Westworld’

Salem stars Joe Doyle, Oliver Bell and Tamzin Merchant
Joe Doyle, Oliver Bell, and Tamzin Merchant in WGN America’s ‘Salem’ season 3.

Oliver Bell has a starring role as Little John in WGN America’s popular horror series Salem and he can be seen playing one of the robots (or ‘hosts’) in HBO’s sci-fi series, Westworld. Bell, of course, never anticipated being a part of two popular shows simultaneously and never thought he’d be tackling the role of the Devil on one show while playing a robot in another. Both series have provided the young actor with an opportunity to work with talented adult co-stars and during our interview in support of Salem season three and Westworld‘s first season, Bell said he’s learning from everyone he’s working with and appreciates the chance to be a part of both productions.

Oliver Bell Exclusive Interview:

Is there something you’ve really enjoyed about playing Little John on Salem?

Oliver Bell: “I really enjoy just being able to play someone other than myself in a very big way because really I’m just playing an adult in a boy’s body, and I’ve not been an adult yet. It’s a new experience, of course, because I can only experience being an adult when I’m actually an adult so it’s fun becoming that at my age.”

A lot of actors who play villains or characters who are supposed to be evil say they don’t view their character as being a bad guy. However, there’s no way you can say Little John is anything but evil. How do you approach taking on a character who is totally evil?

Oliver Bell: “I picture him in my head as how they really described him and I’ll put my own interpretation on him. Being able to picture that really helps me find his voice or the way he acts and how powerful he is or evil or nice, his characteristics.”

Did you realize when you first took on the role in Salem that Little John would turn out to be such a major part of the series?

Oliver Bell: “Not at all, honestly. I just thought it was just going to be this one little line, maybe just one line and walk here, something like that. Just this boy who’s just your average 1800s kid, if you know what I mean.”

At what point did they tell you Little John was going to have a more important role in the story?

Oliver Bell: “In season two, really, because if you watch the show you know that I didn’t really have that much action in season one. In two, they really introduce my character and kind of show it as what it is. It kind of appealed to me over each episode how he’s evolving and how he’s growing into what he became. Really, I just learned from the script.”

It’s such a specific setting because you are trying to recapture the 1800s. Does it feel kind of normal walking around those streets and that 1800s set now after filming so many episodes?

Oliver Bell: “Yes, it is. It is in Louisiana and there are some parts of Louisiana that I just wonder do we need to build a set? (Laughing) I mean, honestly. Yeah, it is kind of normal because I eat lunch with zombies and witches, everything that would be dead now and in a sarcophagus.”

What’s it been like to work with Janet Montgomery and how has your relationship changed over the years?

Oliver Bell: “Well, at first, when I really got to know these guys… They’ve been like a family for a year or two now and I started to join them and to be honest with you, I felt like I really had no one to be with. Once I actually got to know them and start doing scenes with them, I got to know two versions of them. The one that they are in Salem, and the one that they are in real life. It’s nice because I can actually tell the difference between the two.”

You are one of the youngest actors on the series. Is that kind of difficult because you really don’t have anyone your age to hang out with?

Oliver Bell: “You get used to it, eventually. Yeah, there’s sometimes extras and they’re very nice to hang out with. Of course, they’ll be there, they’re so loyal and it’s so nice because they work super hard and I get to see them sometimes maybe just passing by or at lunch. But most of the time, yeah, I’m on my own with adults and I’ve had to get used to that. I’ve accepted it, and it’s fun, really, because it helps me become my character more.”

Is there anything you can tease about what’s coming up on Salem?

Oliver Bell: “Not really, but I can say it’s definitely exciting and you’ll just have to watch to find out.”

Has there been any time on set where you were a little freaked out? I know if I was walking around set, I’d be scared. How do you handle it?

Oliver Bell: (Laughing) “Well, I can tell you one thing – I was scared the first time I ever walked onto that set. I was like, ‘Okay, let’s get out of here!’ I’m the biggest scaredy cat. I hate to admit that, but honestly it’s so hard to go to sleep at night after some of the things that I might reflect on. As I said before, you get used to it. After a while it’s just like a few pieces of wood painted on the outside and then thrown together. It’s not really that scary after a while.”

So Salem isn’t necessarily the type of show you would watch if you weren’t in it because you’re too much of a scaredy cat?

Oliver Bell: “Definitely. I would not be watching that. In fact, when I’m watching regular TV I have to be careful about what (I watch). Even just advertisements for scary shows and stuff like that I am staying away, because I’m that big a scaredy cat. I can’t even see stuff half a second without having nightmares.”

So then being on the set of Westworld must be kind of a relief because it’s not scary.

Oliver Bell: “Yeah.”

Can you talk about working with Sir Anthony Hopkins on Westworld?

Oliver Bell: “It was an incredible experience. He’s an amazing man. I really enjoyed working with him and I learned a heck of a lot, actually. I learn a lot from every actor I work with because I get to see their point of view on how to act and their point of view on how they see the world that they’re living in of that particular set or storyline. So yeah, I learned a lot from him. How they prepare as well because of course preparation always helps. You never know. I might learn something that could actually help me, like a lot. I pay attention.”

Is there anything in particular that you can point out that Anthony Hopkins taught you during your time on Westworld, besides being prepared?

Oliver Bell: “Well, he just really helped me get into character. Because the brilliant actor he is, he’s always preparing for his scene or preparing for something ahead of time. Actually working on a scene with him just shows how much that helps. It’s just being able to learn how much you might need to prepare and study the script actually really helps you. He taught me that because he does it a heck of a lot, like all the time. And it just makes me think, ‘Well, if I did this…’ I do now, of course, and it just really helps me out.”

Are you ready for something a little lighter or maybe a comedy after Salem and Westworld?

Oliver Bell: “I like fantasy. A lot of physical action, where in comedy, yeah, you might get dark humor out of action and stuff like that. Yeah, I think I might be ready for a role along the lines of that.”

How did it feel the first time that you actually saw the completed scene with your face coming apart in Westworld?

Oliver Bell: “Well, here’s the thing. They called me in for a live cast, like you know a whole body silicone mold, to be made from my body. I can tell you one thing, it’s not as pleasant as you would think. I mean, you feel amazing and you feel beautiful and you feel like you just had the treatment of your life, but during the process it’s just like an hour to an hour and half, two hours something like that. They called me in for that and I didn’t know that that was actually possible because I’m sure they did some CGI on it, but they told me it was legit in that, at least part of it was, they used my live cast and then they sent it to some guy that does whatever he did to make my face come off. Not mechanical robotics, you know like that. Seeing it on screen I tried to picture it as best as I could seeing my own face coming off. It looked a lot better than I pictured.”

Did you have to remain completely still for an hour and a half while you were having the mold done?

Oliver Bell: “Yes, mostly because even the tiniest little smile or frown or whatever it is… Your look that they’re trying to get, because silicone just really moves with your face until it dries, even slightest movement would have messed it up so you have to stay still. The sweet thing is I took Yoga classes with my mom in Louisiana, just like, ‘Breathe through your nose,’ all the Kundalini energy.”

Bee also traveled around the globe to cover stories from an international perspective, with segments from Jordan, Germany and, most recently, Russia.”

‘The Flash’ Season 3 Episode 6 Recap and Review: Shade

The Flash Season 3 Episode 6

“You have no idea what’s about to begin,” says Dr. Alchemy (voiced by Tobin Bell) to The Flash (Grant Gustin) as the speedster believes he, Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and a SWAT team have captured the mysterious figure who’s been giving powers to humans and turning some of them evil in The CW’s The Flash season three episode six.

As the episode begins, Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) is telling his dad about the dreams he’s been having where he’s known as Kid Flash, speeding around the city saving people just like Barry. Joe goes from being concerned to full-on worried, realizing Wally is experiencing exactly what Magenta did. Wally’s disappointed that Joe’s not excited for him because he’s hoping this means he’ll get powers like Jesse and Barry.

At the CCPD, Barry offers his help on one of Julian’s (Tom Felton) cases, but the smug CSI lets Barry know that just because they worked on a case together and had a drink doesn’t mean that they’re now “mates.” Joe comes in just as assistant D.A. Cecil has informed Barry he’s back to working metahuman cases because of all the attacks lately. Joe and Cecil flirt and she tells him she’s looking forward to their movie night. After she leaves, Barry wants details about how and when Joe asked her out but Joe is there to talk about Wally and his dreams. Barry realizes that Alchemy is targeting Wally and this again is part of the ripple effect of Flashpoint. He tells Joe that he’ll tell Wally about it and try to discourage him from pursuing getting powers.

Later at the West home, Barry talks to Wally and Iris (Candice Patton) about Flashpoint and how he was Kid Flash. Barry tells him he was badly injured, but Wally says it’s because he didn’t have a team, just Iris backing him. Wally doesn’t want to hear it and reveals that he thinks that Joe doesn’t trust him and favors Barry. (Is this kid ever going to do anything other than whine?!) He asks Joe point-blank if he trusts him and Joe stumbles for an answer which makes Wally believe he’s right and leaves.

At S.T.A.R. Labs, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) and Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) are working when H.R. (Tom Cavanaugh) arrives with an idea about turning S.T.A.R. Labs into a museum where he can be a semi-celebrity as a cover for them actually working with The Flash. This is when they tell him that on this Earth Dr. Wells, his Doppelganger, admitted to killing Nora Allen so he really can’t show his face outside of S.T.A.R. Labs. Disappointed, he goes off to try to come up with something else.

Later that day, Cisco is looking for H.R. thinking he took his special handcuffs that have a power-dampening effect on metahumans. Cisco accuses him of taking them, but H.R. says he doesn’t know anything about them. Meanwhile, Caitlin’s at her desk looking guilty, but the two men don’t notice. Barry pages them to come to the cortex and brings them up to speed about a murder he and Julian caught where a person was strangled to death but no fingerprints or marks were left on the body. Cisco brings up the camera footage from where the killing took place and the gang watch as a large shadowy figure murders an innocent businessman. “Shade,” says H.R. and then proceeds to tell Barry and the gang about a similar metahuman killer on his Earth. Barry asks Cisco to work on setting a trap for this Shade character so they can focus on Alchemy who’s targeting Wally. Cisco asks if anyone else is going to get powers because of Flashpoint, and Barry shakes his head no. Of course, Caitlin’s looking uneasy about this whole conversation.

Not being able to keep him in the dark any longer, Caitlin approaches Cisco as he works on a trap for Shade and tells him she took his special handcuffs. “Why?” he asks. “Because I need them,” answers Caitlin. Cisco starts to ask what she’s talking about and Caitlin picks up his glass of water and freezes it solid. “Surprise,” says Caitlin, looking scared as Cisco is shocked by the revelation that she has the same powers that Killer Frost had on Earth-2. Caitlin asks Cisco for a favor and tells him she wants him to vibe her and see if she turns into Killer Frost in the future. Cisco tries to tell her that just because she has those powers doesn’t mean she’s going to become evil, but Caitlin fears that it does. Cisco takes her hand and vibes, seeing a vision of himself in a different outfit wearing his special power goggles fighting Caitlin, who has changed into Killer Frost. When he lets go of her, a terrified Caitlin asks him what he saw. Seeing how desperate she is and not having the heart to tell her the truth, Cisco lies and says he didn’t see anything. Relieved and happy for the first time in months, Caitlin gives Cisco a big hug and thanks him. She asks him not to tell anyone yet about her powers and he agrees to keep it a secret.

At the CCPD, Wally meets up with Joe who has been looking for him since he left in a huff. Father and son have a heart-to-heart talk, with Joe making Wally understand his fears of what Alchemy is doing to him and assuring him it doesn’t have anything to do with trusting him. They start to head to S.T.A.R. Labs and Wally falls to the ground in pain. He hears Alchemy’s voice telling him to find him so he can restore what was taken from him.

At S.T.A.R. Labs, Caitlin checks Wally out and doesn’t find anything wrong with him. H.R. suggests that to keep Wally safe they put him in the pipeline until they can figure out a way to bring down Alchemy. Joe doesn’t like the idea but Wally thinks it might be for the best until they can stop Alchemy. Joe wants to call off his movie date but Wally and Iris insist he go, with Barry telling him he and Iris will watch over Wally. Joe doesn’t want to go alone saying it was supposed to be a group thing. Cisco, wanting to distance himself from Caitlin, says he’s up for movie night and agrees to go even though it’s The Shining which Barry reminds him freaks him out. Caitlin picks up on Cisco’s behavior and invites herself along, too, saying she wants to spend time with him. This causes H.R. to tag along, something he’s able to do thanks to a new device of his that transforms his physical appearance to look like his partner back on Earth-19.

Before the movie begins in the park, Caitlin confronts Cisco saying he’s been on edge ever since he vibed her and wants to know why. He tries to lie but Caitlin tells him to stop it because she can always tell when he’s lying to her. Cisco comes clean and tells her the truth about what he saw. Caitlin, terribly saddened and scared again, asks if he has ever vibed something that didn’t come true. He says he saw Earth-2’s destruction which didn’t come true, but he reminds her that it could still happen in the future. Cisco tells Caitlin to tell Team Flash and they will figure it out together. But Caitlin doesn’t want to, deciding she must leave and never come back. She thinks that’s the only safe solution.

Shade shows up as the movie is just beginning and starts attacking the crowd. Cisco turns on the alert app on his phone and Barry and Iris get the alert back at S.T.A.R. Labs. Barry races out to the park to take on Shade. This is when Alchemy attacks Wally while he’s in the pipeline. Screaming and rolling around in pain, Iris decides this is a good time to open the door and go in to check on him. (Since when did Iris become a clueless teenager in a horror movie?!) Wally gets up and tells her not to get in his way. He tries to leave but Iris decks him and knocks him out.

Back at the park, Cisco, Caitlin, and H.R. are in the S.T.A.R. Labs van talking to Barry via radio. Cisco hacks into all the parked cars, turning on their headlights to blind and momentarily take away Shade’s ability. It works, and Caitlin takes off the power-weakening cuffs and tosses them to Barry to use on Shade who’s now in human form.

Crisis over, Team Flash returns to S.T.A.R. Labs to discuss what happened. H.R. points out that it’s not a coincidence that Shade attacked at the same time Alchemy went after Wally. Wally wants to use himself as bait to trap Alchemy, but Barry doesn’t like the idea. Cisco says they can’t ignore problems; they need to deal with them. He’s looking at Caitlin the entire time, while a wide-eyed Caitlin tries to shake her head no to get Cisco to stop but he won’t. He tells her she needs to tell them her secret, and everyone looks at poor Caitlin as she finally breaks down and admits that she has powers. She holds up her hands, showing the icy frost coming off of them. She yells at Cisco saying it wasn’t his secret to tell, angry that she’s the one turning evil and has to leave soon. She walks off and Barry goes after her to try to comfort her. She tells him that she’s known for about three months and she’s run all the tests but there is no way to stop what is happening to her. Instead of being there for her and making her feel better or telling her he and Team Flash will figure it out, Barry makes it about him and admits to Caitlin all of this is because of Flashpoint. Caitlin looks hurt and a little resentful at Barry, realizing that his selfish act might have doomed her to being evil Killer Frost forever. Before they can continue, Iris barges in saying Wally is awake. Wally, Joe, and the rest of the team decide to set a trap for Alchemy by using Wally’s images to get his location.

Joe, Barry, and Wally take a SWAT team with them to Alchemy’s lair. Wally enters acting as though he wants to get his powers back and stop the pain.

Caitlin apologizes to Cisco, telling him she’s sorry for how she yelled at him and is actually glad he told them. She admits she has trouble asking for help and that she gets that from her mother. Cisco tells Caitlin she’s better than her mother and even though her mother told her stopping her powers would be impossible, Cisco reminds Caitlin that doing “the impossible” is their specialty and gives her a hug.

Back at Alchemy’s lair, the trap is going as planned with Wally catching Alchemy off guard. Instead of asking for his powers, he says he wishes for Alchemy and his followers to be gone. The SWAT team rushes in and Alchemy seems to be captured until Barry notices a very fast white light racing around and realizes it’s another evil speedster. He tells Joe and Wally to get out as the white blur takes out the SWAT team, and Alchemy disappears leaving a glowing stone on the floor. Wally hears Alchemy’s voice and goes to pick it up while both Joe and The Flash yell at him to stop. He picks it up and gets wrapped into a weird-looking black cocoon. This is when the white blur grabs The Flash and reveals himself as the God of Speed, Savitar.

The Flash Season 3 Episode 6 Review:

Uneven in tone but full of action and emotion, episode 6 titled “Shade” feels like a long set-up for the highly anticipated episode seven titled “Killer Frost.” Injecting too much silliness and forced humor with Tom Cavanagh’s H.R. from Earth-19, this episode seems to struggle to bring some light moments to what is becoming a dark and tragic storyline for a favorite main character.

There are two stand-out performances in this episode. Danielle Panabaker is outstanding once again as a frightened Caitlin Snow who finally breaks down and confesses to her closest friend about her powers and asks him to see if she will turn evil. Every scene featuring Panabaker and Carlos Valdes is emotionally wrenching. She conveys so perfectly the dread, fear, and hopelessness Caitlin feels.

The second stand-out is Carlos Valdes as Cisco who at first lies to Caitlin because he’s unwilling to break her heart and tell her the truth. He eventually tells her about the scary vision of them fighting and finally gives her the words of support and comfort she desperately needs. These two have solid chemistry together and it’s really their performances that make season three such a powerful, suspenseful, and emotional one. It just might surpass season one as the best season of the series.

With Savitar’s arrival, Wally wrapped up in a cocoon, and Caitlin about to be taken over by her powers, here’s hoping that Cisco and Barry will find a way to help Caitlin fight off the transformation to Killer Frost so the threesome can save Wally and stop Alchemy and Savitar.

According to Amazon, their team of editors reads hundreds of thousands of pages each year. “The editorial team had a handful of books that we seriously considered for the top pick but in the end our choice of The Underground Railroad was unanimous,” stated Chris Schluep, Amazon Senior Book Editor. “Colson Whitehead’s novel is timely, important, and a great work of literature.”

Amazon’s Top 10 Books of 2016:

1. The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead: A brilliant, wise, fantastical yet grounded portrayal of a young slave seeking her freedom on a real underground railroad.
2. The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis: Part literary thriller, part western, this is a debut novel about a young tomboy trying to survive a post-apocalyptic wilderness as she searches for her parents.
3. Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance: A very personal tour of a segment of our culture that’s losing its way in modern America.
4. The Nix by Nathan Hill: A big, smart novel about so many things: family, politics, revolution and the things we choose to remember (and forget).
5. Mischling by Affinity Konar: Affinity Konar’s beautiful novel about twin sisters who survive Auschwitz is precisely crafted, acutely sensitive and ultimately uplifting and hopeful.
6. Lab Girl by Hope Jahren: An inspiring and entertaining memoir about work, life and love from a plant scientist who is just as adept at analyzing the natural world as she is at illuminating human relationships.
7. Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson: A poetic, breathtaking novel about growing up female and black in the 1970s–a time of conflicting pressures and sometimes crushing assumptions.
8. Pumpkinflowers by Matti Friedman: An unforgettable nonfiction account of men changed by war, told in a voice that is both straight forward and undeniably literary.
9. Before the Fall by Noah Hawley: From the award-winning creator of Fargo, a thrilling page-turner about an airplane crash and its seemingly heroic survivors.
10. Swing Time by Zadie Smith: A masterful novel that tackles big issues–race, class and the ups and downs of long term friendship–told with a dancer’s grace and ease.

Three of the authors on Amazon’s list have earned their spots in the top 20 for the first time. Amazon also said two entertainers authored Top 100 books this year and memoirs take up 26 of the spots on the Top 100 list.
