Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe in ‘Swiss Army Man’ (Photo by Joyce Kim / A24)
A24’s released the official lyric video for ‘Montage’ from the trippy fantasy adventure comedy Swiss Army Man. The song was written and performed by Andy Hull and Robert McDowell of Manchester Orchestra, with the film’s stars Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano also lending their voices to the single. ‘Montage’ is featured on the film’s soundtrack and will be released as a single on June 3, 2016. Co-written and co-directed by Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, Swiss Army Man will open in limited release on June 24th followed by a wide release on July 1st.
Discussing the song, Andy Hull stated, “Last January, I received an email from our good friends, the directing duo Daniels. We had met and fallen in love while working together on our music video for ‘Simple Math’ (the one where they throw me out of a car). They asked if I was interested in writing some songs for a full-length feature they had been working on. I was obviously thrilled at the opportunity and so they sent me the script. It was the craziest story I had ever read and I knew that only these two insanely talented individuals could pull off something this ambitious. I immediately wrote and recorded a song with Robert and sent it to them. I guess we did something right because that was when this 13-month process of scoring our first movie began. There was also one other thing we had to keep in mind. The Daniels didn’t want any real instruments in the movie. Only voices. The idea was that Paul and Daniel’s character would create their own score in their minds. Duh!”
Hull continued, “Anyways, we had to write a lot of the material before the movie was shot so that the actors could sing along while filming. After the movie was shot, we did traditional scoring at our studio, where we watched the footage and added music (voices). Nearly a year after we began working on the movie, we flew to LA to record the final vocals from the actors to really make it sound like this score is taking place inside of a crazy dudes mind. It was and is surreal. The end result is at times really trippy and lonely. There are also songs that have over 100 voices singing and sound outside of anything I thought we would be able to create. What we aimed for was something really beautiful that can evoke emotions without having to always use lyrics or any traditional instrumentation. It’s an up and down journey that parallels the travels and conversations of these two characters. It was easily one of the greatest experiences of our lives. It really pushed and stretched us to think outside of the box and outside of our comfort zone. I’m thrilled that we finally get to share it.”
The Plot: Hank (Paul Dano) is stranded on a deserted island, having given up all hope of ever making it home again. But one day everything changes when a corpse named Manny (Daniel Radcliffe) washes up on shore; the two become fast friends, and ultimately go on an epic adventure that will bring Hank back to the woman of his dreams.
BBC America’s released details on their slate of new and returning scripted series as well as info on the special David Beckham: For the Love of the Game. Programs new to the network’s lineup for the summer and fall seasons include The Hunt debuting on July 3rd and Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency which is set for an October 22, 2016 premiere. Ripper Street returns on July 28th, Undercover will air on November 17th, and The Living and the Dead premieres this fall.
“Our brand and shows stand out despite the huge volume of TV content right now,” said Sarah Barnett, BBC AMERICA President. “BBCA shows are a little different from the mainstream, even if they sometimes end up shaping it. From Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency to Planet Earth II to Top Gear to our new work in development, this is television that US audiences become fanatical about because of its unabashed commitment to an entertaining vision and strong point of view.”
BBCA Series Details:
The Hunt – Narrated by famed naturalist Sir David Attenborough, the new series comes from multi-Emmy®-winning executive producer Alastair Fothergill (The Blue Planet, Frozen Planet) and series producer Huw Cordey (South Pacific, Frozen Planet) – the makers of the landmark series Planet Earth, which captivated audiences around the world in over 130 countries. Through character driven stories, The Hunt illustrates in dramatic detail the strategies predators use to catch their prey (and those that the prey use to escape), with each episode centering on one of our planet’s key habitats. From open grasslands and dense forests to the arctic and the open ocean, the cutting-edge seven-part series features rarely seen wildlife and animal behavior – revealing like never before the challenges predators and prey face in these very different worlds.
Ripper Street – BBC AMERICA’s critically-acclaimed drama is a vivid, sensual descent into the often-violent lives of the men and women of Whitechapel in late Victorian London. Matthew Macfadyen stars as Detective Inspector Reid, Jerome Flynn as Detective Inspector Bennet Drake, Adam Rothenberg as Captain Homer Jackson and MyAnna Buring as Long Susan. In this shadowy world, police and criminals are the closest of enemies, and sometimes the strangest of allies.
The Living and the Dead – In 1894, a newlywed couple inherits a farm in the English countryside, and begins their new life there together. But their arrival in the isolated community unleashes strange supernatural phenomena that threaten their marriage and their survival. The Living and the Dead is an uncanny, intriguing and disturbing drama, steeped in the eeriness of the rural world, just as the industrial revolution is poised to crash in and disrupt old certainties. This original six-part series, created by Ashley Pharoah (Life On Mars, Ashes To Ashes), will star Colin Morgan (Humans, Merlin) and Charlotte Spencer (Line Of Duty).
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency – From the producers of The Walking Dead and penned by Max Landis – the mind behind cult classic Chronicle – BBCA’s new original series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is a comedic thriller that follows the bizarre adventures of eccentric “holistic” detective Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett) and his reluctant assistant Todd (Elijah Wood), as they wend their way through one big, seemingly insane mystery a season, crossing unlikely paths with a bevy of wild and sometimes dangerous characters, each episode landing them a few random steps closer to uncovering the truth. The series is an adaptation of Douglas Adams’ (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Doctor Who) wildly successful comic novels, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, and is set in the unexpected world of the hyper, absurd, eponymous detective Dirk Gently.
Undercover – A six part limited series, Undercover features lead character Maya, who is about to become the first black woman to hold the highest ranking public prosecutor role in England. Just as her life comes under intense public scrutiny she discovers her husband Nick, and the father of her children, has been lying to her for years. Is he concealing an affair, or is it something altogether more sinister? If she digs up his real past will she jeopardize her own future? What price do you pay for uncovering lies? And who wants her in the top job, and why? From BAFTA-winner Peter Moffat (Criminal Justice) and directed by James Hawes (Penny Dreadful), the series stars Academy Award-nominee Sophie Okonedo (The Secret Life of Bees) as Maya, Adrian Lester (Red Band Society) as Nick and Golden Globe®-nominee Dennis Haysbert (24) as Rudy Jones.
David Beckham: For the Love of the Game – In BBCA’s new 90 minute special David Beckham: For the Love of the Game, soccer legend David Beckham sets himself the challenge of a lifetime: to play seven soccer matches on all seven continents of the globe and get back to the UK in time for his own star-studded UNICEF fundraising match. Playing the beautiful game in some of the most challenging and remote locations of the world, Beckham discovers how important soccer is to the many different people he meets and plays with. In this up close and personal portrait, David visits locations ranging from the icy landscapes of Antarctica to the jungles of Papua New Guinea while reflecting on soccer’s unique ability to inspire and unite people across the world.
Projects in Development:
Zero Motivation – Executive Produced by Amy Poehler and Brooke Posch through Paper Kite Productions along with Natasha Lyonne, Eilon Ratzkovsky (July August Productions), Israeli filmmaker Talya Lavie and Tami Sagher who is executive producing and writing. Zero Motivation is based on the award-winning feature film from Lavie. Memoria – Adam Barken (Killjoys, Flashpoint) is set to write Memoria, an emotionally driven sci-fi drama about a man who begins to unravel after his memories conflict with technology. Temple Street, the company behind BBCA’s Orphan Black, is producing.

Manage-ment’s Dan Halsted is producing along with Andre and Maria Jacquemetton (Mad Men).

Bridget Regan in ‘The Last Ship’ season 3 (Photo by Doug Hyun / TNT)
During the 2016 WonderCon in Los Angeles, The Last Ship executive producer Steven Kane and actress Bridget Regan who plays Sasha Cooper teamed up to discuss season three. The new season’s set to premiere on TNT on Sunday, June 12th at 9pm ET/PT and as Kane explained during our interview, we can expect the crew of the Nathan James to be addressing an emerging issue with the cure in Japan. “Something’s going on in Japan, the cure doesn’t seem to be working, there’s a risk of a mutation,” explained Kane, adding, “But that doesn’t seem possible because Dr. Scott said it doesn’t mutate. That was one of the reasons we were able to stop it, but something’s going on.”
The trailer for season three shows some of the crew members being captured and held as prisoners of war. Commenting on what fans of the series can expect from the upcoming season, Kane said, “Let’s just say that there’s a lot going on. A lot of intrigue in Asia and intrigue at home, and our guys get caught smack-dab in the middle of it.”
“The region is filled with pirates – not the Pirates of the Caribbean pirates, but people just sort of stealing what they can. Natural resources may be in abundance but getting them out of the earth, getting them out of the farmland is still [difficult]. You need people for that. There are going to be winners and losers in this post-apocalyptic world and so our job is to make sure that the winners don’t subjugate the losers,” explained Kane. “We kind of put our nose into different places and say, ‘Look, we brought the cure home for everybody. If there’s a mutation, we want to get to the bottom of it and see if our doctors can figure it out. We worked too hard for this to fall apart now.'”
Asked how season three will top the previous two seasons, Kane replied, “We ask that question of ourselves because we throw everything in every time. We didn’t just take three years to find the cure – we found the cure the first season. So, what do you do next? And then it was, ‘Well, what does America look like?’ And then we started the season saying, ‘What can we do next?’ I was already talking about if we get a season four, what I could do. I started saying things like, ‘Well, season three was easy because…’ And I caught myself and said, ‘Wait a minute, two months ago I was saying how season two was so easy and season three is killing me. So our attitude is like what the Navy SEALS say, ‘The only easy day was yesterday.'”
“The trick is you can’t BS the audience. You can’t create something people won’t believe entirely because everything is kind of grounded in reality,” added Kane. “The virus is grounded in real science. The desires of people who wanted the cure was grounded in real human behavior, whether it was greed, whether it was panic or fear. You know, Mrs. Granderson had points. She made good points. She was still a villain but she had logic. She wasn’t twirling a mustache. And, the Russians had a point. And the Brits – the guys who became immune – they had a philosophy. They were even writing a manifesto. So, how do you create villains that are not just the Bad Guy of the Week, that actually are worth exploring as characters in and of themselves, and then give these guys great people to fight against. And then to force them to dig deep into what they can bring, fighting each other…not fighting but arguing with each other and fighting the common enemy. Then, keeping it exciting, keeping it at sea. They’re all the challenges we have.”
As for what Bridget Regan can tease about her character, Sasha, Regan offered, “Sasha, when we meet her, she’s in what we refer to as New China. One of the things I love about the show is that it explores this idea of what people are capable of in the best way and in the worst way. That’s what’s so scary about this premise and that’s what’s really scary about our setting for this season is that the people that can rise to power might not necessarily have the best of intentions. Sasha is doing her best trying to manage this new power in China and keep up relations as peaceful as possible, but there’s only so much she can do. So when Tom Chandler comes back into her life, she boards the Nathan James and she’s in a really new world for her. Being on board a Naval Destroyer is something fully new, but her skills are put to use because she is this translator. She’s aware of the region, of the potential adversariess and what their strengths are and their weaknesses. She’s vital to this mission and she has a knowledge that no one else on the ship has, but she also knows Tom in a way that no one else does.”
