74 Original Songs Still in the Hunt for Oscar Glory

Sam Smith Photo

74 original songs have advanced in their pursuit of a 2016 Oscar nomination. The Academy of Motion Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said 74 songs from 2015 feature films remain eligible for consideration by members of the Academy in the Original Song category. Among the songs remaining in the running are Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre and Furious 7‘s “See You Again.”

The Academy lists these rules for the Original Song category: “During the nominations process, all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award. A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film. To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

Silicon Valley‘s T.J. Miller has been tapped to host the 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Awards set to take place on Sunday, January 17, 2016 in Santa Monica, CA. The 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards will air on A&E, Lifetime and LMN and, for the first time, will combine the Critics’ Choice Television Awards with the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

Announcing Miller as host, BFCA/BTJA President Joey Berlin said, “We are so excited with the new direction that this year’s show is taking, combining the film and television awards. We are confident that T.J.’s infectious energy will help carry that excitement not only in the room, but also to viewers watching at home.”

Miller is a stand-up comedian, musician, podcaster, and actor. His acting credits include the upcoming Deadpool as well as How to Train Your Dragon 2, Cloverfield, Get Him to the Greek, and Seeking for a Friend for End of the World.

The Critics Choice Awards are voted on by the Broadcast Film Critics Association* (BFCA) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) and recognize the best in television and films of all genres and budget levels. The nominations will be announced on Monday, December 14, 2015 at 10AM ET/7AM PT.

Per the BFCA and BTJA: “The Critics’ Choice Awards are bestowed annually by the BFCA and BTJA to honor the finest in cinematic and television achievement. The BFCA is the largest film critics’ organization in the United States and Canada, representing more than 300 television, radio and online critics. BFCA members are the primary source of information for today’s film-going public. BTJA is the collective voice of almost 100 journalists who regularly cover television for TV viewers, radio listeners and online audiences. Historically, the Critics’ Choice Awards are the most accurate predictor of the Academy Award nominations.”

Esquire Network is set to premiere Team Ninja Warrior on January 19, 2016 featuring 72 fan favorites from the competition series American Ninja Warrior. Season one will consist of eight one-hour episodes with comedian Matt Iseman, former NFL player Akbar Gbajabiamila, and Fox Sports reporter Alex Curry on board as hosts. The teams will be made up of two male and one female athletes with the competition taking place on a newly designed course that will allow two people at a time to compete. According to Esquire Network, the competitors will literally cross paths as they tackle the obstacle course.

The Competition Details:

In the first 6 one-hour episodes of Team Ninja Warrior, four different teams will see their teammates individually race directly against the opposing team’s players through the brutal obstacle course. Each individual win gives the team more points, and at the end of the episode, the two teams left standing will face-off, with the winner of that final relay showdown moving on to the Team Ninja Warrior finals.

All competitors will be running, jumping, vaulting and rolling through an amped-up version of the world’s most intense obstacle course, vying for a cash prize and big bragging rights. From leaping off the “Sonic Swing,” and hanging on for dear life on the “Log Grip,” to crossing paths and out-maneuvering each other on the “Dancing Stones” to finally, racing up the redesigned “Warped Wall,” every episode will feature formidable new obstacles, each harder than the last. And, in the end – only one team will be crowned Team Ninja Warrior champions.

TNT Moves Forward on ‘Animal Kingdom’ and ‘Good Behavior’

Animal Kingdom Cast
The cast of TNT’s ‘Animal Kingdom.’

Good Behavior starring Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery and Animal Kingdom (inspired by the film of the same name) have been given 10 episode season one orders by TNT and will premiere in 2016. Good Behavior is based on the Letty Dobesh novels and has Wayward Pines‘ Chad Hodge attached as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, and Wayward Pines author Blake Crouch also on board as executive producer. Charlotte Sieling directed the pilot and Becky Clements and Marty Adelstein are also executive producing. John Wells (ER) and Jonathan Lisco (Halt and Catch Fire) executive produce Animal Kingdom.

Both shows will go into production in early 2016.

Good Behavior and Animal Kingdom are muscular, distinct dramas that will define the new direction of TNT,” said Sarah Aubrey, executive vice president of original programming for TNT. “We believe audiences will love watching Michelle Dockery trade in her manners for the life of a sexy, complex ex-con in Good Behavior and Ellen Barkin and Scott Speedman command an unruly family of criminals and adrenaline junkies in Animal Kingdom.”

Good Behavior Details:

Good Behavior tells the story of Letty Dobesh (Dockery), a thief and con artist whose life is always one wrong turn, or one bad decision from implosion – which is exactly how she likes it. Fresh out of prison, Letty tries to stay afloat; reunite with her 10-year-old son, who is currently being raised by her mother Estelle (Lusia Strus); and regularly see her substance-abuse counselor, Christian (Terry Kinney), whose motives for helping her are questionable. Chaos returns to Letty’s life when she overhears a hitman (Juan Diego Botto) being hired to kill a man’s wife, and sets out to derail the job. She soon finds herself on a collision course with the killer, entangling both of them in a dangerously captivating relationship.

Animal Kingdom Details:

Animal Kingdom is a bold drama starring Emmy® and Tony® winner Ellen Barkin, Scott Speedman, Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, Jake Weary, Finn Cole, Daniella Alonso, and Molly Gordon.

The series centers on 17-year-old Joshua “J” Cody (Cole), who moves in with his freewheeling relatives in their Southern California beach town after his mother dies of a heroin overdose. Headed by boot-tough matriarch Janine “Smurf” Cody (Barkin) and her right-hand Baz (Speedman), who runs the business and calls the shots, the clan also consists of Pope (Hatosy), the oldest and most dangerous of the Cody boys; Craig (Robson), the tough and fearless middle son; and Deran (Weary), the troubled, suspicious “baby” of the family. Also prominent are Nicky (Gordon), J’s steady girlfriend, and Catherine (Alonso), Baz’s de facto wife and the mother of their 3-year-old daughter, Lena.

It isn’t long before Josh is pulled into the family’s life of indulgence and excess, but he soon discovers that it’s all being funded by criminal activities. Joining the family comes with more danger and excitement than he might be ready to handle.

‘The Leftovers’ Season Three Will Be Its Last

HBO officially announced The Leftovers‘ third season will be its last. Season two finished up on December 6, 2015 and season three is expected to air in 2016. Created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, The Leftovers season two starred Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, Carrie Coon, Ann Dowd, Margaret Qualley, Chris Zylka, Regina King, Kevin Carroll, Jovan Adepo and Janel Moloney.

Showrunner Lindelof, Perrotta, Mimi Leder, Tom Spezialy, Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey executive produce.

“It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome back Damon Lindelof, Tom Perrotta and the extraordinary talent behind The Leftovers for its third and final season,” said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. “This show has proven to be one of the most distinctive HBO series and we are extremely proud of its unrivaled originality, which has resulted in such a passionate following by our HBO viewers. We admire and fully support Damon’s artistic vision and respect his decision to bring the show to its conclusion next season.”

“I have never, ever experienced the level of creative support and trust that I have received from HBO during the last two seasons of The Leftovers,” said Damon Lindelof. “Tom, myself and our incredible team of writers and producers put tremendous care into designing those seasons as novels unto themselves…with beginnings, middles and ends. As we finished our most recent season, it became clear to us that the series as a whole was following the same model…and with our beginning and middle complete, the most exciting thing for us as storytellers would be to bring The Leftovers to a definitive end. And by ‘definitive,’ we mean ‘wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional,’ as all things related to this show are destined to be.

On behalf of our incredible crew and superb cast, we are all tremendously grateful that HBO is giving us an opportunity to conclude the show on our own terms…an opportunity like this one rarely comes along, and we have every intention of living up to it. One more thing. We are blessed by the unwavering support of our fans and the incredibly powerful voice of the critical community. We feel absolutely privileged to heat up one last helping of leftovers.”

‘The Bronze’ with Melissa Rauch Gets a 2016 Release Date

Sony Picture Classics has set a March 18, 2016 limited theatrical release date for The Bronze, co-written and starring The Big Bang Theory‘s Melissa Rauch. Melissa and her husband, Winston Rauch, wrote the film and Bryan Buckley directed. The cast also includes Thomas Middleditch, Sebastian Stan, Gary Cole, Haley Lu Richardson, and Cecily Strong.

The Bronze made its debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where, judging by its score on RottenTomatoes.com, critics were less than thrilled with the dramedy.

The Bronze Plot:

A decade ago, Hope Ann Greggory (Rauch) was America’s sweetheart. Her inspired performance on a ruptured Achilles at the world’s most prestigious gymnastics tournament clinched an unlikely bronze medal for the U.S. team and brought glory to her hometown of Amherst, Ohio. But in the years since that epic third place victory, Hope hasn’t done a whole lot with her life. Still living in her dad Stan’s (Cole) basement, still sporting her daily uniform of a Team USA gym suit with teeny-bopper bangs, ponytail and scrunchie, she spends her days at the mall milking her minor celebrity for free food and favors.

Hope’s routine is upended when she learns that she must coach Amherst’s newest gymnastics prodigy Maggie (Richardson) in order to receive a sizeable financial inheritance. The hard-edged yet insecure Hope is faced with a serious dilemma: does she jeopardize her “hometown hero” status by devotedly training this rising star to achieve the dreams she never could? Or does she attempt to sabotage the impressionable Maggie to ensure that she remains the one and only star in Amherst?
