‘Mistress America’ Movie Review

Mistress America Movie Review
Greta Gerwig as “Brooke” and Lola Kirke as “Tracy” in ‘Mistress America’ (Photo courtesy of Fox Searchlight Pictures © 2015 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation)

“Being around Brooke made you want to find life, not hide from it,” writes Tracy (Lola Kirke), a lonely college freshman new to New York who has found her new best friend/creative writing muse in her soon-to-be stepsister, Brooke (Greta Gerwig), in the comedy film Mistress America.

Not finding it easy adjusting to college life, Tracy finally listens to her mother and reaches out to her soon-to-be stepsister, Brooke, hoping to find a friend. Tracy yearns to experience life in the Big Apple and what she finds in Brooke is a free-spirited woman about town who quickly brings Tracy into her wild adventurous lifestyle. Their very first night together Brooke and Tracy take to the clubs, meeting young men and enjoying the magic that is Time Square at night. Soon Tracy gets caught up in all of Brooke’s mad schemes including her hopes to open up a “very different” type of restaurant and ends up on a road trip in search of someone from Brooke’s past to hopefully invest in her latest crazy idea. Tracy, who aspires to be a writer and desperately wants to join the elite writing club on campus, begins to use Brooke’s wild adventures and bold lifestyle as the basis of a short story which she hopes will win her admission into the club.

Uneven and self-indulgent with characters who annoy more than endear themselves to the audience, Mistress America tries to be too clever and cute for its own good. The friendship between Tracy and Brooke never clicks because the two actresses have zero chemistry together. Lola Kirke’s performance as Tracy, the lonely, in-over-her-head college freshman desperate to experience life and find a friend is sadly one-dimensional, being only an observer and tag-along of Brooke’s life adventures. Her character is also at times too quick to realize the faults and empty promises that come from Brooke. Someone from Tracy’s background and lack of interaction with people would not have such keen insight.

Greta Gerwig delivers an energetic, almost manic performance as the spirited, happy-go-lucky Brooke who still hasn’t grown up and is living her life as though she’s 24 when really she should have matured past her chaotic behavior years ago. Her performance in the film is the strongest and gives real life to Mistress America.

The dialogue is annoying, with the characters speaking pretentiously and in a way no one would in real life. In truth the movie feels as though it’s trying to be funnier and more original than it is…much like its characters.

With uneven pacing, stilted dialogue, and uninteresting, borderline annoying characters, Mistress America comes up short of being the coming-of-age, gal pal film it so desperately strives to be.

Fox is giving The Frankenstein Code a minor makeover before its launch in 2016. The network has decided to get rid of the show’s title, replacing it with a new title: Lookinglass. Fox didn’t provide any details on why the titled was changed (although the show’s synopsis references ‘Lookinglass’), nor did it confirm the show’s actual premiere date. For now, all we know is that it will debut in 2016.

The series is a modern-day twist on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein horror story and is executive produced by Rand Ravich, Howard Gordon, Brad Turner, Donald Todd, and Michael Cuesta. The cast is led by Rob Kazinsky (Jimmy Pritchard) and includes Dilshad Vadsaria (Mary Goodwin), Adhir Kalyan (Otto), Tim DeKay (Duval Pritchard), and Ciara Bravo (Gracie Pritchard). The Plot:

Seventy-five-year-old Jimmy Pritchard (Philip Baker Hall) is a shell of his former self. A drinker, a womanizer and a father who always put work before family, Pritchard was forced to resign as L.A. County Sheriff for corrupt conduct more than a decade ago. Now, some 15 unkind years later, he is killed when he stumbles upon a robbery at the home of FBI Agent Duval Pritchard, one of his two children. But death is surprisingly short for Jimmy, who is brought back to life by billionaire tech-genius twins Mary Goodwin and her brother, Otto, founders of the social networking empire, Lookinglass.

Resurrected as a younger, better version of himself, with physical abilities of which he never dreamed, a re-animated Pritchard is given a second chance at life. What will he do with it? Will he try to repair the damage he did to his family? Will he embrace a new sense of purpose or fall prey to old temptations?

Nicki Minaj Will Open the MTV Video Music Awards

Nicki Minaj to Open the MTV Video Music Awards

Nicki Minaj is set to open this year’s MTV Video Music Awards taking place on August 30th and airing live at 9pm ET (tape-delayed on the West Coast). Minaj made the announcement by posting a photo on Instagram of a sonogram featuring the Moonman statue, poking fun at the pregnancy rumors that have been circulating since she called her boyfriend her “baby father” during an August 8th concert.

Minaj was recently in the news openly discussing her anger over “Anaconda” not earning a Video of the Year nomination. On July 21st Minaj, who’s obviously not too upset to agree to perform on the awards show, tweeted, “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year.” That set off a lengthy twitter discussion with Taylor Swift who believed that tweet was referencing her nomination.

This year’s VMAs will be hosted by Miley Cyrus with Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Pharrell Williams, Demi Lovato, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Tori Kelly, A$AP Rocky and Twenty One Pilots all set to perform.

‘American Dad’ Renewed for Seasons 12 and 13

Fans of the animated comedy series American Dad! have reason to celebrate. TBS has just given the series a renewal order for two more seasons, with seasons 12 and 13 each to consist of 22 new episodes. Season 11 will premiere in early 2016 on TBS and Adult Swim.

American Dad! has thrived since coming to TBS and Adult Swim, demonstrating the Turner portfolio’s ability to build enduring hits through a combination of smart programming, savvy promotion and extensive multiplatform distribution,” stated Deborah Bradley, executive vice president of networks optimization and content commercialization for Turner Broadcasting. “We look forward to keeping the crazy-but-lovable Smith family around for a long time.”

Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman created the series which ranks #1 on basic cable on Monday nights at 9pm among viewers ages 18 through 34 and averaged 4 million viewers on TBS and Adult Swim. The voice cast includes Seth MacFarlane, Wendy Schaal, Rachael MacFarlane, Scott Grimes, and Dee Bradley Baker.

The Plot:

The series centers on super patriotic CIA agent Stan Smith (Seth MacFarlane) and the misadventures of his unconventional family in Langley Falls, Va. Stan’s blissfully unaware wife, Francine (Schaal), has an unfaltering loyalty that allows her to turn a blind eye toward Stan’s unabashed arrogance. Meanwhile, Stan constantly butts heads with his 18-year-old left-wing activist daughter, Hayley (Rachael MacFarlane), who knows just how to push her father’s buttons, whether it’s by helping the homeless, demanding women’s rights, or advocating gun control. Hayley’s 14-year-old brother is the geeky-yet-confident Steve (Grimes), a kid who spends his time playing video games and obsessing about the opposite sex.

The Smith cabinet is rounded out by two rather unconventional members: Roger (MacFarlane), the sassy, sarcastic and routinely inappropriate space alien who is constantly trying on new disguises and, with them, new personalities, and Klaus (Baker), the attention-starved goldfish with the brain of a German Olympic skier who always throws in his two cents, regardless of whether anyone is listening. Together, this screwball family of radically different personalities is just trying to figure out how to love and trust one another in a bi-partisan world. And with a guy like Stan in charge of national security, it’s guaranteed to be one hilarious ride.

A&E and LMN will be airing two O.J. Simpson documentaries on consecutive nights featuring never before released interviews and recordings. The Secret Tapes of the O.J. Case: The Untold Story will air on LMN on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 8pm ET/PT followed by O.J. Speaks: The Hidden Tapes on Thursday, October 1st at 9pm ET/PT.

The documentaries will air almost 20 years to the day when the so-called Trial of the Century ended in a not guilty verdict.

Both documentaries are executive produced by Laura Fleury, Peter Tarshis, Stephen Auerbach, Chuck Braverman, and Lawrence Schiller. Schiller was a friend of a member of Simpson’s legal team/inner circle, Robert Kardashian, and his access to the case provides the documentaries with a unique look into the civil and criminal trials.

Details on the O.J. Simpson Documentaries, Courtesy of A&E:

The LMN special, The Secret Tapes of the O.J. Case: The Untold Story, reveals new insights into both the events surrounding the verdict of the criminal trial, and the various disturbing facets of O.J.’s personality, through never before heard statements by O.J. himself. The documentary exposes disturbing realities about O.J.’s thoughts, feelings and behavior before, during and after the trial.

And, for the first time in 20 years, an audio recording that O.J. secretly taped, prior to the infamous Bronco Chase, is heard. The special features rare interviews with key players on both sides of the case, including extensive, candid discussions with Robert Kardashian and Kris Kardashian Jenner.

The A&E special, O.J. Speaks: The Hidden Tapes, provides unique access to the civil trial, which found O.J. responsible for the wrongful deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Viewers gain exclusive access to the plaintiffs’ deposition tapes from the civil trial – which were locked away and buried in a storage warehouse for nearly 20 years. Executive producers, Stephen Auerbach and Chuck Braverman, worked closely with Fred Goldman to obtain the revealing and insightful deposition tapes. Family members, including Fred, and members of the civil trial legal team, including Daniel Petrocelli, are interviewed exclusively for the special.

Hulu has picked up a second season of the comedy series Difficult People starring Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner. The series, executive produced by Klausner, Amy Poehler, Dave Becky, Tony Hernandez, and Scott King (who also serves as showrunner), will have a 10 episode season two. Making the announcement, Hulu’s SVP Head of Content Craig Erwich said they’ve been fans of the series from the beginning.

“I cannot wait to see what a whole new season will bring and am pleased to bring more of their hilarious brand of comedy to fans,” said Erwich. Hulu will be working in collaboration with Universal Cable Productions on season two.

“From our first meeting with Julie, Billy and Amy, to the spec pilot we shot with them, to Hulu’s spectacular and ongoing commitment, this has been a dream of a show. And I’m not just saying that because I’m afraid of them,” said Jeff Wachtel, President, Universal Cable Productions and Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.

“I’m the luckiest girl in the world to be able to make more episodes of Difficult People,” said Klausner. “This must be what it feels like to win the lottery, have a fast metabolism or win an Oscar for My Cousin Vinny.”

The Plot:

Difficult People hails from Julie Klausner (Billy on the Street) who stars alongside Emmy®-nominated Billy on the Street host Billy Eichner. As best friends living in New York City, their typical, irreverent behavior lands them in some very awkward situations.
