‘Brilliant Minds’ Episode 4 Recap: “The Blackout Bride”

NBC’s Brilliant Minds episode four opens with a voiceover from Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) revealing that the most common question patients ask when they are told they’re dying is how long do they have left. As Wolf continues, we see a happy couple celebrating their wedding. The groom offers his new bride drugs – even though it’s not their thing – and she accepts.

“What they’re really asking is, how much time do I have left to free myself of guilt before I go,” says Wolf.

Wolf sits next to John Doe’s hospital bed on a Saturday night and carries on a one-sided conversation. A nurse informs Wolf that John’s being transferred to a long-term care facility in the morning. The order came down from someone higher up than his Chief Medical Officer mom.

Wolf immediately summons his interns from their various Saturday night activities. They review John’s medical history, which is full of infections and drug-resistant bacteria. Wolf wants them to help figure out a reason for John to remain at the hospital. Of course, they don’t get far into the discussion when the episode’s titular character wanders in.

The bride from the opening minute looks as if she’s been in a car crash. She doesn’t seem to know where she is and keeps asking about her new husband, Charlie. The interns rush to check her vitals as she keeps repeating, “He has cold feet.”

The blood on her dress isn’t hers, and her eyes don’t track Wolf’s flashlight.

A short while later, Dr. Carol Pierce (Tamberla Perry) joins Wolf to examine the bride. She’s now lucid and admits they took Molly. After that, all she remembers is a car brought her to the hospital. Wolf assures her they’ll help find Charlie and figure out what happened.

Carol and Wolf believe she’s got disassociative amnesia from a trauma. Wolf thinks the bride’s mind is protecting her from something.

Police arrive and Carol convinces them not to arrest the bride until they can get more information from her about what happened. The interns find the bride’s purse and learn her name’s Bridget and she has a hotel key card. They toss out ideas of how she got her injuries, including a possible car crash. Van (Alex MacNicoll) reminds them she kept saying Charlie has cold feet. Maybe she killed him, given the amount of blood on her dress.

They have to act quickly, so Wolf makes the impulsive decision to get inside her head by taking the same drug she ingested. (There was one in a packet inside her purse.) The interns are shocked, but Wolf believes he needs to put himself in her state of mind.

Dana (Aury Krebs) isn’t thrilled she’s been chosen to accompany Wolf to the hotel in an attempt to retrace Bridget’s steps. Meanwhile, Carol tries hypnotherapy on Bridget to recover her memories. Van assists and takes notes as Bridget recalls dancing at her wedding on a rooftop. They were so happy, and then they went into a room that was like ice.

Over at the hotel, the Molly’s kicking in as Wolf and Dana search Bridget’s hotel room. It’s freezing cold, but there are no obvious signs of a struggle. They head to the nightclub on the roof, and the combo of face blindness, dislike of crowds, and the Molly can’t be good for Wolf. Dana promises to have his back and then notices the cops have already arrived. As she’s describing the situation, she realizes Wolf is no longer by her side. Just then, Van calls with the results of Bridget’s toxicology labs. Wolf is now on Molly laced with PCP!

He’s dancing in the middle of the crowd as Dana listens to Van list the possible effects of the drug combo. One is flashbacks, which Wolf is currently experiencing. He recalls a time when his father played music to help a patient. It was also when his father assured him that although he had to move out, he still loved him. His dad asked him to consider moving in with him, instead of living with his mom.

A douchebag hits on Dana, and Wolf reacts violently, which leads him to believe Bridget also could have reacted violently to a currently undetermined situation. Dana declares that she hates being “‘drug sherpa” as they head off to get food. Bridget apparently was also really hungry while high.

It turns out Charlie works as a sous chef at the hotel’s restaurant, but he isn’t there. Wolf is worried about the douchey dude and thinks he might need rhinoplasty. He latches on to that word and declares that he should fight a rhino. Dana convinces him otherwise.

Wolf feels like he’s on fire and wants to get inside the freezer. Bingo! Bridget said Charlie got cold feet and that’s because they went into the freezer. Charlie’s still inside it, frozen on the floor with a very weak pulse.

Back at the hospital, Ericka (Ashleigh LaThrop) and Jacob (Spence Moore II) start work on John Doe’s case. Jacob doesn’t think there’s anything they can do in just a few hours, but Ericka is convinced they need to do everything possible to figure things out.

Wolf’s met at Emergency by Dr. Josh Nichols (Teddy Sears) and quickly describes Charlie’s condition, including that he has a penetrating abdominal injury. Josh realizes Wolf’s high, and Wolf admits he is.

Carol can’t believe Wolf took the drug without knowing for sure what it was, but Wolf firmly believes Charlie wouldn’t have been found alive if he hadn’t. The cops were there but didn’t look in the restaurant’s freezer.

They break the news to Bridget just as the cops arrive to arrest her. They found the icepick used to stab Charlie and think Bridget attacked him. As they’re basically dragging her away, Bridget has a seizure. She comes to and remembers that she tried to kill Charlie.

Josh and Wolf engage in another round of witty insults as Bridget undergoes an MRI. The images pop up, and Josh and Wolf realize she’s got cerebral edema, without an obvious sign of trauma or a tumor. Wolf and Josh’s most recent brain bleed cases both died, so Bridget’s prognosis isn’t good.

Ericka continues working on John’s case while Jacob makes out in a closet with Portia. After being called out, Jacob gets back to work but not without accusing Ericka of kissing up to Wolf. Ericka’s had it and reminds Jacob that this is her dream, not a fallback plan because she can’t play sports anymore.

Jacob gives up on John, but Ericka believes caring for patients isn’t futile.

Charlie regains consciousness and confirms that Bridget stabbed him. He’s worried the drugs he gave her caused it, but Wolf doesn’t think so. Charlie explains Bridget’s been stressed about the wedding and even went on a “ridiculous” diet – low-carb, high protein, no sugar – to look good on their big day. They ultimately decided to elope and avoid the stress.

Wolf has a flashback that reveals his father was terminated from the hospital yet still showed up to see patients. Oliver was with his dad when a security guard asked him to leave.

Dana goes through Charlie’s possessions as Wolf apologizes for his behavior. Dana finds Charlie’s vows comparing Bridget to smelling like Vermont in the morning. He also wrote that she’s never been sweeter than she has the past two weeks (when they were dieting). Vermont makes Dana and Wolf think of maple syrup. Bridget has maple syrup urine syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that stops the body from breaking down protein. It caused her brain to swell, confusion, and violence.

Without the stress and the drugs, she probably would have gone through life without ever having a violent episode. However, the condition would have ultimately killed her. This violent episode and Charlie’s description of her normal behavior saved her life. She’s worried he’ll never forgive her, and Wolf suggests she forgive herself.

Brilliant Minds Episode 4 Recap

Later, Ericka walks in on Jacob shaving John’s face to help him look good before his big move. Ericka suggests they take him outside to feel the breeze, something he probably hasn’t done in a very long time. Jacob tells Ericka she’s a good doctor who doesn’t need to prove herself to anyone.

As they’re sitting outside with John on a gurney, Ericka accuses Jacob of fondling her. However, it turns out it was John. His toe is moving!

As Wolf wheels Bridget to see Charlie, Dana pulls him aside. She starts crying as she tells Wolf there was a complication and Charlie died. Wolf and Carol comfort Bridget, telling her she’s not to blame. “I killed him. I have to live with it,” says Bridget. She wonders if she’s always been someone capable of violence, and Carol assures her they will be there to help with future treatments. She won’t be on her own getting through this.

She wants to see Charlie one final time and Wolf accompanies her. She strokes Charlie’s face and kisses him, while in a voiceover, Wolf says the hardest person to ever forgive us is ourselves.

Bridget’s escorted out by the cops as Carol, her husband, and their daughter, Maya, discuss the state of the marriage. Neither Carol nor Morris have been open about what’s going on, and Carol admits they’re taking time apart, although they still love each other.

Wolf examines John and initially believes the movement was just a reflex that happens in paralyzed patients. He compliments Ericka and Jacob’s passion and work, even if it didn’t get the desired result. Suddenly, he stops and shines a light in John’s eyes. “That’s not a reflex,” says Wolf, adding, “I don’t think this man is in a coma.”

Ericka and Jacob have given John a reason to remain in their care.

Later, the interns take a break, and Jacob leads a toast to their own Red Wedding. Dana jokes about seeing Wolf dance, even though they thought he was only into classical music.

The episode ends with Carol talking about Maya and asking Wolf if being the child of divorced parents ever gets easier. He admits the divorce was messy, but he did something that he’ll never forgive himself for.

‘Silo’ Season 2 Trailer: The Survival of One, The Hope of All

Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson, Dune Part 2) is willing to do whatever it takes to get to the truth in Apple TV+’s Silo season two’s trailer. The two-minute trailer shows Juliette surviving the harsh environment outside her silo and determined to bring the truth about this dystopian world back to her fellow survivors.

In addition to Rebecca Ferguson, returning stars include Tim Robbins, Common, Harriet Walter, Chinaza Uche, Avi Nash, and Alexandria Riley. Shane McRae, Remmie Milner, Clare Perkins, Billy Postlethwaite, Rick Gomez, Caitlin Zoz, Tanya Moodie, and Iain Glen also reprise their roles for the much-anticipated new season.

Silo is the story of the last ten thousand people on earth, their mile-deep home protecting them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built and those who try to find out face fatal consequences,” reads Apple TV+’s synopsis. “Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer who seeks answers about a loved one’s murder and tumbles onto a mystery that goes far deeper than she could have ever imagined, leading her to discover that if the lies don’t kill you, the truth will.”

Season two premieres on November 15, 2024, with new episodes of the 10-episode season streaming on Fridays.

Graham Yost created the series, based on Hugh Howey’s bestselling trilogy, and serves as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Michael Dinner, Nina Jack, Joanna Thapa, Ferguson, Morten Tyldum, Howey, Fred Golan, Rémi Aubuchon and AMC Studios.

‘Lockerbie: A Search for Truth’ Teaser Starring Colin Firth

Oscar winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) stars in the first teaser for Peacock’s Lockerbie: A Search for Truth. The limited series explores the 1988 explosion of Pan Am Flight 103 and is set to premiere on both Peacock and Sky on January 2, 2025.

The five-part series also stars Catherine McCormack, Rosanna Adams, Jemma Carlton, Harry Redding, Sam Troughton, Mark Bonner, Ardalan Esmaili, and Selwa Jghalef.

“Inspired by the true-life story, on December 21, 1988, 259 passengers and crew were killed when Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie 38 minutes after take-off, with a further 11 residents losing their life as the plane came down over the quiet, Scottish town. In the wake of the disaster and his daughter’s death, Dr Jim Swire (Firth), is nominated spokesperson for the UK victims’ families, who have united to demand truth and justice. Traveling across continents and political divides, Jim embarks on a relentless journey that not only jeopardizes his stability, family, and life, but completely overturns his trust in the justice system,” reads Peacock’s synopsis.

The synopsis continues: “As the truth shifts under Jim’s feet, his view of the world is left forever changed. Exploring events from the disaster and its aftermath, Lockerbie: A Search For Truth provides an intimate account of a man, a husband, and a father who risks everything in memory of his daughter and the unflinching pursuit of truth and justice.”

David Harrower wrote the limited series and serves as an executive producer along with series director Otto Bathurst. Additional executive producers include Gareth Neame, Nigel Marchant, Sam Hoyle, Liz Trubridge, Jim Sheridan, Kirsten Sheridan, and Oskar Slingerland.

Commenting on the series, executive producers Neame and Marchant said, “The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 was one of the most devastating acts of terrorism that took the lives of 270 innocent people, including both US and UK citizens. As the spokesperson for the UK victim’s families, we have followed Jim Swire’s remarkable story for over three decades. It is consequential to now watch Colin Firth’s captivating performance as he depicts Jim’s life’s work on screen.

In part a profoundly moving character story of love and loss, this drama is as much an investigative political thriller that shows how an ordinary man with unstoppable determination can take on governments and world leaders in pursuit of truth.”

First Look: ‘Black Doves’ Starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw

Netflix is showing off the first batch of photos from Black Doves. The streamer also confirmed the six-episode holiday-themed spy thriller will premiere on December 5, 2024, and has already been renewed for a second season.

Keira Knightley (Official Secrets), Ben Whishaw (Fargo), and Sarah Lancashire (Happy Valley) lead a cast that includes Andrew Buchan (Carnival Row), Adeel Akhtar (Fool Me Once), Tracey Ullman (The Mandalorian), and Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country). Luther Ford (The Crown), Andrew Koji (Warrior), Kathryn Hunter (Andor), Sam Troughton (Chernobyl), Ella Lily Hyland (Fifteen Love), Adam Silver (Masters of The Air), Ken Nwosu (Look the Other Way and Run), Gabrielle Creevy (Three Women), and Omari Douglas (Rye Lane) also star.

“Set against the backdrop of London at Christmas, Black Doves is a sharp, action-filled, and heartfelt story of friendship and sacrifice. It follows Helen Webb (Knightley), a quick-witted, down-to-earth, dedicated wife and mother — and professional spy. For 10 years, she’s been passing on her politician husband’s secrets to the shadowy organization she works for: the Black Doves,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “When her secret lover Jason (Koji) is assassinated, her spymaster, the enigmatic Reed (Lancashire), calls in Helen’s old friend Sam (Whishaw) to keep her safe. Together, Helen and Sam set off on a mission to investigate who killed Jason and why, leading them to uncover a vast, interconnected conspiracy linking the murky London underworld to a looming geopolitical crisis.”

The series is created by Joe Barton (The Lazarus Project) who serves as writer and executive producer. Alex Gabassi (The Crown) and Lisa Gunning (The Power) direct, with Jane Featherstone, Chris Fry, and Keira Knightley executive producing.

“I started writing the scripts for this show over last year’s Christmas holidays, fueled by turkey sandwiches and discarded bottles of cream liquor,” said Barton to Netflix back in 2023. “To be now going into production with a cast and crew full of people whose work I admire so much is unbelievably exciting, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to get to see this show come to life.”

‘Tracker’ Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: “Out of the Past”

Justin Hartley in Tracker Season 2 Episode 1
Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw in ‘Tracker’ season 2 episode 1 (Photo: Sergei Bachlakov © 2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc)

CBS’s Tracker season two episode one reveals brand new information about Colter Shaw’s past. The episode touches on an unsolved case that’s haunted Colter for a decade. The new season also introduces Camille Pickett (Floriana Lima), a character with a personal connection to Colter, and confirms we’ve seen the last of Teddi for a while.

And now on to the recap – spoilers ahead!

Colter (Justin Hartley) shows up in the dead of night, tosses meat to a guard dog, and enters a house. He makes his way through the house and finds a laptop. He snaps a photo of the note next to it and methodically searches the home, even inspecting the contents of the fridge.

Colter removes a baggie of dirt from the freezer as a car pulls up outside. The owner walks inside and it’s obvious he and Colter know each other. Frank (Ryan Dorsey) threatens to call the cops, but Colter doesn’t back off. He brings up the case of Gina Pickett who went missing 10 years ago to the day. Frank claims not to have had anything to do with her disappearance. He thinks Colter’s just sore because he didn’t solve the case; that’s why he’s been harassing him for a decade.

They get into a physical altercation, and Colter warns Frank that he will prove he did something to Gina.

Colter’s nursing a beer in his trailer when Velma (Abby McEnany) calls to check in. She’s concerned since this is the anniversary of Gina’s disappearance, but Colter tries to assure her he’s fine. Season two of Tracker quickly explains Teddi’s absence when Velma says she’s gone to help her mom. Now that Teddi’s gone, Velma’s pitching in to help Reenie (Fiona Rene) set up her new office.

Getting down to business, Velma’s got a weird job for Colter with a $35,000 reward. A couple and their two young kids went missing near Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The missing man’s brother, Craig, is offering the reward, and the sheriffs are already investigating the case.

By the time Colter arrives in Pine Bluff, the family has been gone for 15 hours. Craig says that two days ago, his brother told him they were going on vacation but didn’t say where they were headed. Colter’s spidey senses are tingling, and Craig admits he thinks there are people after his brother. Craig recalls seeing two guys casing the house just last week.

His brother, Ted, had gambling problems and owed money. However, he got lucky with a scratch-off lottery ticket and won $50,000. Even the local news covered Ted’s windfall. That should have been enough to pay off his debts.

Colter checks out the family’s van that was left on the side of the road. As he’s taking in every little detail, U.S. Marshal Jenny Martinez (Workin’ Moms’ Enuka Okuma) asks what he’s up to. Colter’s shocked the marshals are working on a missing persons case less than 48 hours after the family went missing. Colter observes it appears someone pulled up, forced the van off the road, and abducted the family. Additionally, the family left their cell phones behind. Martinez says a Florida man was abducted six months ago after winning the lottery. She’s hoping that’s not what happened to Ted and his family.

Colter points out a nearby path into the woods and learns Martinez’s partner is already investigating it. Martinez warns Colter to stay out of their way, and of course, Colter doesn’t listen. He calls Bobby (Eric Graise) with the lottery news and asks him to find out who was after Ted’s money.

Colter walks through the woods and ends up on a dirt road just as Martinez’s partner, Jeremy Boyd (Matt Long, Manifest), emerges from the woods. Jeremy’s happy to have Colter’s help, and Colter reveals his belief that the van was left in that condition as a setup. The clues don’t add up. There’s no sign of a struggle or tire tracks from another car. Colter believes the family knew they were being followed and took actions to disguise their movements. All of this means the search area has expanded, and he and Jeremy need to split up. They also need to be cautious because someone else is also still looking for the family.

Bobby calls with an update on Ted’s gambling. He was active in online betting, but his DMs show he paid off everything right after winning $50,000. But what’s really strange is that Ted’s wife, Connie, didn’t seem to exist before 2015. She seems to have popped up out of nowhere, and Colter thinks maybe she was actually the target.

Colter discovers an old rusty car nearby and finds Ted’s two children. The oldest child, Brett, admits he didn’t listen to his dad and brought his tablet with him when they left their car. His parents got mad, and Ted took off to get rid of the tablet. When he didn’t return, their mom went to search for him.

Colter’s still questioning the kids when Marshal Martinez shows up, gun drawn. This is a federal investigation and she doesn’t need him butting in. Colter knows there’s much more to this case than meets the eye, but Martinez refuses to provide any details.

Colter’s call to Reenie reveals he’s landed on the mom being in witness protection. Reenie knows that if the marshals lost someone in witness protection, they absolutely wouldn’t want to talk about it. Bobby tracked the tablet to a gas station and Colter’s heading there now. Colter, Velma, and Reenie realize this case just got more complicated … and dangerous.

Colter finds the tablet in a trash can outside the convenience store. Inside, it’s obvious there was a struggle. A man’s dead in a pool of blood and a few feet away, Colter spots Ted, cowering in a corner. He realizes there’s someone behind a door, and after a brief struggle, Colter chokes out his attacker.

Marshal Jeremy Boyd shows up as Colter is assuring Ted he’s there to help. Ted’s in shock and bleeding from head wounds, but manages to ask Colter to save his wife. After Colter says the kids are safe, Ted confirms their attackers are after his wife.

Reenie discovered Connie’s been in witness protection for nine years after testifying against Tommy Gardner, the kingpin of a Mississippi criminal organization. The court found Gardner and his thugs guilty of money laundering, contract killing, and drug trafficking. And it turns out Connie was married to Tommy’s son, Kirk, before she testified against them. Reenie calls her a badass.

Our first look at Connie shows her at what looks like an industrial park trying to start a Jeep. It refuses to turn over, and a man pulls up outside. She grabs a Taser from the glove compartment and uses it on the man, knocking him out. Connie steals his car and returns to the woods only to discover her children are gone. She’s frantic, and Colter makes his presence known, telling her Ted’s brother hired him and that the kids are fine.

Connie thought this part of her life was over, but when she posed for the photo after Ted won the lottery, the Gardners tracked them down. She knew the Gardners’ criminal ways before marrying Kirk but ignored it until she couldn’t. Kirk was just as ruthless as his dad. He turned on her after she went to the FBI and helped get his dad convicted.

Unfortunately, the past has caught up with her now. Colter, however, believes the past doesn’t have to define her future. But Connie knows Kirk will do whatever he can to make her pay.

Reenie calls with the shocking news that U.S. Marshal Jeremy Boyd was found dead in the woods. And, more importantly, he’s been dead eight hours, which means the man Colter believes is Jeremy is really Kirk Gardner! A photo on Connie’s phone confirms it.

Kirk, wearing Jeremy Boyd’s jacket, shows up at Ted’s brother’s house asking about the kids. Craig lets him in, and Kirk stabs him in the stomach.

Connie’s panicking in Colter’s car, aware Kirk won’t stop until he kills everyone she loves. Colter convinces her to remain calm as they head to Craig’s place.

Kirk finds the two kids playing with a tablet, and Brett instantly recognizes Kirk. Kirk’s just leaving Craig’s house with the kids when Colter and Connie pull up. The girl gets free, but Kirk holds onto Brett and orders Colter to drop his gun. Kirk refuses to let go of Brett, who is actually his son. He offers to let Connie live in peace and won’t tell his family her whereabouts if she lets him leave with their son.

Connie refuses, and Kirk’s about to shoot her when Colter steps in front of her. Colter tells her she needs to let them go and asks her to trust him. Colter pleads with Kirk to let Brett say goodbye to his mom before they leave, and Kirk finally agrees. After Brett leaves his side, the marshals fire a kill shot.

Later, Marshal Martinez compliments Colter’s work on the case and promises she’ll ensure Connie, Ted, and the kids are safe. Back at his trailer, Colter looks at the old missing posters for Gina Pickett, the case from 10 years ago that he could not solve. Velma calls and gives him a video tour of Reenie’s new office. And Reenie has an update on the Gardners: they’re under investigation for conspiracy to kidnap a child. Plus, there’s a bounty on the Gardner family which Marshal Martinez will wire to Colter. Ted and Connie offered to pay the $35,000 that Craig had put up, and Reenie knew Colter wouldn’t accept it. Instead, she told them to open a foundation in Craig’s name.

Reenie also announces she’s upped her fee from 8% to 10% because she’s worth it. Bobby joins the conference call just as Velma and Reenie receive a pizza he ordered. Reenie says her new firm will be Green and Associates, with the associates to be determined.

After Colter hangs up, he visits Camille, Gina’s sister. She asks if he visited Frank and is sad that nothing has changed. Frank continues to insist he doesn’t know what happened to Gina. They’re both feeling depressed and wind up in bed, which helps to take their minds off Gina.

Lying in bed, Colter describes going to Frank’s and finding a sample of his handwriting. He thinks they can compare it to letters they’ve received since Gina’s disappearance. Colter also found it strange that Frank had a bag of dirt in his freezer. He thinks there’s some clue he’s missing, but that someday he’ll be able to prove Frank was there when Gina went missing. Colter promises he won’t stop looking until he finds Camille’s sister.

‘Uncharted’ Documentary: Inside Alicia Keys’ “She Is The Music” Camp

Paramount+ has set an October 22, 2024 premiere date for Uncharted, a documentary focusing on Alicia Keys’ She Is The Music songwriting camp. “Everything done in this film was done by women in every capacity,” stated Keys. “You get a true sense of the journey of these artists and the songwriting process which is so special.”

Peabody Award winner Beth Aala directed and produced the feature-length documentary. Executive producers include Alicia Keys, Abby Greensfelder, Katie Couric, Abigail Rodriguez, Brenda Robinson, Regina K. Scully, and Geralyn White Dreyfous. She Is The Music’s Jody Gerson, Ann Mincieli, Sam Kirby Yoh, Dr. Stacy Smith, and Michelle Arkuski also executive produce.

Uncharted takes us behind the scenes of Alicia Keys’ She Is The Music songwriting camp in this revealing look at the music business that focuses on the lack of access and opportunity granted to young black and brown women. The camp’s participants take center stage as they try to break through the industry with the next big hit song,” reads Paramount+’s synopsis. “Among those featured, we meet Ayoni from Barbados, who follows in Rihanna’s footsteps while reaching for the same stars; Atlanta’s DaVionne who received her break collaborating with known artists and now works on her own original recordings; and Chicago-born Jean Deaux who does it all on her own — writing, recording, and producing while touring with successful acts.”

Alicia Keys, Jody Gerson, Ann Mincieli, Sam Kirby Yoh, and Dr. Stacy Smith founded the non-profit She Is The Music organization. Its mission statement reads: “She Is The Music– SITM – is a nonprofit organization increasing the number of women working in music – songwriters, engineers, producers, artists and industry professionals – as well as providing resources and support for women-focused initiatives that are working to create meaningful change within the music industry at large – both through our own programs, as well as external efforts around the world.”

Justin Hartley Interview: ‘Tracker’ Season 2 and Returning Guest Stars

Justin Hartley’s follow up to This Is Us would be Kevin Pearson’s dream. Tracker became the number one new show when it premiered in the spring. Over the summer, CBS brought the cast back for a panel with the Television Critics Association. Hartley stayed to speak with reporters after and at the evening’s party.

Season one already included guest stars like Jensen Ackles as Colter Shaw (Hartley)’s brother and Hartley’s real-life wife, Sofia Pernas, as rival bounty hunter Billie Shaw. Hartley previewed Colter’s new bounties and continuing storylines in season two, premiering Sunday, October 13, 2024 at 8pm ET/PT.

Justin Hartley Tracker Season 2 Interview

Do you ever get surprised when you learn more background about Colter?

Justin Hartley: “We dive into a lot of that stuff. We talk a lot about it so I kind of have all that figured out. And the hope is that never happens. Now, nothing’s perfect so it could possibly happen. There’s so much going on that you try not to think about what you did three weeks ago, but we’ve ironed out a lot of that stuff intentionally so that, hopefully, the idea is that doesn’t happen.”

Your last character was an actor like yourself dealing with Hollywood things. Is it nice to play a character who has none of that industry stuff?

Justin Hartley: “Yeah, look, Kevin Pierson will always be in my heart. That was the time of my life. I loved it but let’s be honest. This business, a lot of times you get typecast. When they see you do something, if you do it well, some people think that I did it well, that’s how they want to see you. To get the opportunity to do something really different with some familiar faces, it’s not lost on me how lucky I am. That doesn’t happen very often. Selfishly, as an actor, to be able to cut your teeth on something else completely different is pretty amazing.”

You ended the season on the beach presumably retired. So, is season two all on the beach?

Justin Hartley: “Listen, we’ve got to get you in the writers room. I love the idea.”

What is going to bring Colter out of retirement?

Justin Hartley: “Well, he was taking a little break. He’s a man of action but I think there’s always time to think about things. I think a lot got dropped on him at the end of season one. When she asked him, ‘What are you going to do?’ I think he says, ‘Right now, nothing.’ He’s just going to take a minute. When we pick up season two, you’ll see he doesn’t take that long of a break.”

You said your wife, Sofia Pernas, is coming back for season two. What was it like to work with her?

Justin Hartley: “I love carpooling. That’s fun. She’s wonderful. If I had my choice, I’d spend every minute with her so any time I get a chance to work with her. Also, you know what’s really cool is when you meet someone that means so much to you that you’re so proud to be with and so proud of and such a fan of, to get to see her work because she’s such a talented actor, she elevates scenes. So, it makes my job easier, actually.

It’s just wonderful to work with her. I love the character too. She brings so many layers to that character. We have a lot of fun stuff coming up.”

Is it fun that she’s competition for Colter?

Justin Hartley: “Yeah, I love the dynamic where it’s like you could look at it like competition but there’s also a history there so there’s a little bit of bad blood but it’s also like are they going to mend things? Are they not? Can you trust her? I don’t know if you can. She hasn’t proven that Colter can trust her. We’ll see how that evolves. There’s a lot of room to work with in that relationship.”

Has Colter changed in season two?

Justin Hartley: “I think ‘evolved’ is a good word. That whole first season, he had this idea about the tragedy behind his father’s death and who was responsible for it. Even though he knew he didn’t have all of the pieces of the puzzle and all the information, he was pretty sure that he knew how things went down. Come to find out at the very end of the season, you realize everything that he had been thinking about that was, in fact, not true. So that kind of turns things on its head and it would make one, I think, someone like Colter especially, think well, maybe I need to rethink my angst about how I go about doing my business because I was living my life in a certain way based on all of these things that I thought were true. I come to find out they’re actually not true.”

Is that naive in a way?

Justin Hartley: “I don’t know if it’s naivete as much as it would be a little bit of a confidence check, wouldn’t it? You’d be like, ‘Wait a minute, I’ve been wrong?’ He’s not really used to being wrong, right? He’s used to getting all the answers. He’ll ask questions. It’s like a dog with a bone until he gets the answers. He’s not going to drop a job. He’s going to work and work and work until he gets the answer. He doesn’t quit. He had the answer and then come to find out he didn’t have the answer. So, it just makes you go, ‘Wait a minute, what did I say?’”

There are hints of a will they or won’t they relationship with Reenie. Now that you’re the number one show, in success do you hope to drag that out longer?

Justin Hartley: “The hope and the goal is to never drag anything out. I think a lot of times people do that. A lot of times people go, ‘Hey, there’s this really great thing that we have. Let’s not spoil it so let’s drag it out.’ I won’t allow it. Nothing’s going to be dragged out. No, we’ve got to fill it with wonderful, great story. I don’t even know if we have enough time to tell the story. That’s how much information we have and how much story that we have to tell you guys.

The hope is to never drag it out, but I know what you’re saying. That has to be something that percolates underneath the circuit. We have that story.”

Does Colter and Reenie’s professional relationship have just as much chemistry as a romance?

Justin Hartley: “I think so. It’s close.”

The banter.

Justin Hartley: “Yeah, I think there’s an interesting banter between the two of them that is a little bit familiar but also respectful. They’re never disrespectful to each other, I don’t think. It’s more a playful kind of thing and a familiarity. Almost like, ‘I can talk to you a certain way without you getting offended,’ and she feels the same way. She does a little bit more of that, to be quite honest, than Colter does. Yeah, I think they really respect each other. I think at the heart of that relationship is respect.”

On This Is Us, nothing was dragged out. You knew when Jack died, you knew all the moments.

Justin Hartley: “You’re right, but going back to your question, has Colter evolved, certainly as a producer, this is the first show I produced but as an actor as well, you hope to evolve. You hope to bring things from other shows that you were on. I was so lucky to be on that show and around all those people and that whole experience. You hope to bring all of that, those good things and those sensibilities to your next project. Just like things you don’t like, you’re like, ‘Okay, I’m going to leave that alone. I’m not going to bring that with me.’ We have a lot of it mapped out.”

Tracker is potentially unlimited because there will always be bounties to collect. How does that compare to having all six seasons of This Is Us and the life story of the Pearsons mapped out?

Justin Hartley: “Hmm, I guess that would be different, wouldn’t it? That’s a good point. I hadn’t considered that until just now. I would say, I think fundamentally, this is a procedural show which is sort of, I guess, the building block that makes it unlimited, whereas This Is Us was not. We do have a serialized element though. So, I would contend that it’s not unlimited. I think maybe the procedural element, the cases or the jobs are unlimited.

I think this show rises and sets with the family and the fact that Colter leads with his heart, the fact that he’s looking for this missing piece of his life. He’s a family man who, interestingly enough, is alone, is a lone wolf. He is and he’s also a family man at heart. That’s what draws me to the character. So, I don’t know if it’s unlimited in that regard. I know what you’re saying with the procedural aspect of it.”

Or at least the showrunners haven’t decided season six yet.

Justin Hartley: “Well, we don’t know. They might have decided that.”

Has there been any talk of other This Is Us cast members guest starring on Tracker?

Justin Hartley: “I would be up for having every single one of them back on. If I had it my way, I’d have them all on at the same time but it’s a different show. I would love that. Imagine a life where you get to do exactly what you want to be doing. They call it work. I love what I do and doing it with people that you absolutely love that are extremely talented. That’s how I feel about all those people.”

Anyone from The Young and the Restless you’d like to see on Tracker?

Justin Hartley: “I have so many friends over there too. Wouldn’t it be cool? Missy Peregrym would be cool to have on. Eric Braeden would be cool to have on.”

You got a full 22-episode season pickup. Is that be careful what you wish for?

Justin Hartley: “Check back with me in a few months. I think I’ll be okay though. I try to stretch. They take care of me so we should be okay.”

As you film on location are you starting to get swarmed by Tracker fans?

Justin Hartley: “No, we’re in the middle of nowhere a lot of times. We’re left alone. We don’t travel to big cities and things like that, so I think we’ll probably be okay – although I could be wrong. We’ll see.”
